It's meant to be a Sonic game that could (should) have released on Sega Saturn. Nothing about the game in a technical sense is really beholden to the Genesis.

No. The original plan was for Chemical Plant to be zone 10 out of an 18 zone game.
What you're probably thinking of is the fact that Death Egg just reuses tiles from Chemical Plant instead of having its own tileset.
I don't really know what the point would be honestly but it's probably possible yeah.

Reminds me of Sonic 3's boss theme, which didn't feel like it was part of that game, and it was awesome because of it.

I've been looking for this myself and can't find anything. I'm gonna just expect the earliest to be on Monday, Aug 14th with the latest being when the game actually releases on the 15th.
While these mastered mixes are objectively better in the clarity of all of the background instruments, I kind of miss the original "oomph" of Studiopolis' and the miniboss' bass. I'm sure it will grow on me. And honestly the original versions we heard probably sounded that way due to video encoding or something.
Maybe they're more for headphone use than my 2.1 get up.

This will probably be the best Sonic OST, Tee is just too good. Wish they got him for sonic forces classic sonic stages.

That would cause a hilarious quality gap between C. Sonic, M. Sonic, and Original's music. Imagine going from Tee's funk to Hoobastank.
I'm hoping they upload the new version of Chemical Plant Zone. You can hear a bit of it in the special stages video and it sounds great.

I'll be mildly interested but really don't care. Reviewers already have a hard on for 2D Sonic. It's why Sonic 4 got an 8 from IGN.

The main beat for the miniboss theme is very close to being a Sonic 3 miniboss beat, it just lacks that little something.

There's certainly going to be at least a few of those. Maybe not 2/10 though, but someone somewhere is performing a drop dash after every jump right now and noting that it's impossible to avoid random deaths due to speed.

Critics go surprisingly easy on 2D Sonic, even when it's dumpster fire garbage so I think it'll be fine lol.
