Please stop posting Youtube links inside spoiler tags

So, there is a rule on neogaf against self-promotion. You are not allowed to repeatedly make threads linking to your personal blog or whatever to get more traffic. Do it too many times and you lose thread posting privileges. And I think that’s good. (Maybe a bit too overzealous as I personally don’t have an issue with it SO LONG AS YOU ARE UP FRONT WITH SAYING YOU ARE LINKING YOUR OWN WORK, but I don’t mind how the rules are currently set up in this regard.) You can still link your own content in threads where that is relevant (review threads, links to your Youtube boss strats in game OTs and so on).

But something I see quite often is people linking their Youtube videos in posts INSIDE spoiler tags. So if you want to click to see the spoiler you will unknowingly open a Youtube link. It can look something like this: To defeat the Cyberdemon , . If you click to highlight the spoiler, you will accidentally open Youtube. This can be very annoying. Maybe your earphones are not plugged into your phone, so you wake your sister sleeping in a nearby bed. Maybe you’re at the office and don’t want to open Youtube. Maybe you have a data cap. A better approach is to link your video outside your spoiler tags and clearly label your link as a video. E.g. To defeat the Cyberdemon ,
shoot at it until it dies
. See this video I made. This way, no one will click your video accidentally, and everyone who is interested in seeing your video will see it.

I don’t get why people put videos in spoiler tags. Are you so desperate to increase your view count that you need to fool people into watching your stuff? (From what I understand, getting views where the viewer immediately closes your video is actually bad for your Youtube channel’s visibility, so that would be counterproductive.) Or do you simply go through life never questioning the effect of your actions in advance? Anyway, please stop.

This has been a public service announcement.

Made even worse by the fact that link-in-spoilers shows up as blue on black text, which is actually readable without clicking the spoiler.

I hate it when someone does it. Please stop doing it.

EDIT: Oh wow the green noises reference that was posted in OT a while back. That was a good thread.

Also, when using the superior black neogaf theme, spoiler tags don't completely hide links. You can still read what's written in yellow, potentially spoiling you of something.

While we're at things that don't work in mobile:
  • Don't put images inside of code tags. "Show image" will simultaneously open a new screen with the image URL and HTML fragments.
  • Don't mask links with images. It'll load the image instead of the link.

Putting videos in spoiler tags can be appropriate at times though. I'm thinking adding a (video)
before the spoiler tag
before the spoiler tag is a nice courtesy

Putting YouTube links into spoilers tags annoys me greatly because it makes no sense since you can see that is a YouTube link even with the spoilers T_T

BAD

"How to beat the

Also, please don't put large images in quote tags. That way you can only view them either in tiny format or blown up. Just post them normally, and they'll be correctly scaled to browser width!

OP, both of your links don't work, I really need to defeat this Cyberdemon.
Agreed, though cannot say I have come across many such posts.

Can I just point out how annoying it is when people use spoiler tags to make jokes?

That makes it more likely for people to click spoiler tags out of habit and get spoiled by someone using it for its intended purpose.

Yeah, I wish there was a way they could disable links in spoiler tags, there are few more annoying gaf behaviors than hiding links of any sort.

I'm with you OP, it's annoying as hell especially if i'm taking a break at work and suddenly I need to worry about a blast of sound from my speakers.

Well, at least it won't be porn EightBitNates-style :p

That's weird. I'm on GAF 20 hours a day and have never clicked a spoiler only to have it be a YouTube link.

But if this happened to me, I would be extremely annoyed. Let alone if it happened repeatedly.
