10 Films to See In August

Although the summer is coming to an end, there is some celebration to be had. This August brings what is perhaps the best slate of 2013 thus far -- hopefully a precursor of what's coming this fall. We're kicking off the month with one interesting failure, but the coming weeks will see some of my favorite festival films from earlier in the year (and even further back) land in theaters. Check out our rundown of the 10 must-see titles and let us know what you're looking forward to most in the comments.

Matinees: Europa Report (8/2), In a World... (8/9), Cutie and the Boxer (8/16), Inch'Allah (8/16), Una Noche (8/23) Closed Circuit (8/28), I Declare War (8/30), Our Nixon (8/30), Afternoon Delight (8/30)

10. Drinking Buddies (Joe Swanberg; Aug. 23rd)

drinking_buddies.jpg

Synopsis: Luke and Kate are co-workers at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking and flirting. They're perfect for each other, except that they're both in relationships.

Trailer

Why Should You See It: Judging by most accounts, I picked the right feature with which to jump into the filmmaking of Joe Swanberg. Known for his prolific work habit, often churning out multiple features a year, Drinking Buddies marks his largest production yet while retaining lo-fi charm and a believable relationship at its center. Check out our SXSW review for the film that's now out on VOD.

9. You're Next (Adam Wingard; Aug. 23rd)

youre_next.jpg

Synopsis: When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.

Trailer

Why Should You See It: It's hard to believe it's been nearly two years since attending the premiere of You're Next, but Lionsgate will finally unleash the entertaining horror flick around the end of August. Contrary to some reports, in no way, shape or form does this slasher escapade bring something wildly new to the table -- but, with visceral thrills and some effective scares, it's well worth checking out. Check out my two-year-old review from TIFF.

8. Passion (Brian De Palma; Aug. 30th)

passion.jpg

Synopsis: The rivalry between the manipulative boss of an advertising agency and her talented protégée escalates from stealing credit to public humiliation to murder.

Trailer

Why Should You See It: While his latest has been lambasted since a festival unveiling last fall, any Brian De Palma fan should know that, until it's in front of you, no overarching judgement can be handed out. We've now arrived in the month of Passion, which hits VOD this week before getting a short theatrical run, and we can't wait to check out what's in store with the Rachel McAdams- and Noomi Rapace-led thriller.

7. Prince Avalanche (David Gordon Green; Aug. 9th)

prince_avalanche.jpg

Synopsis: Two highway road workers spend the summer of 1988 away from their city lives. The isolated landscape becomes a place of misadventure as the men find themselves at odds with each other and the women they left behind.

Trailer

Why Should You See It: One of the more refreshing films I caught at this year's Sundance was a return to form for David Gordon Green, Prince Avalanche. As mostly featuring just Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsh on the job, I said, "with a dose of genuine drama as revelations build and build to a breaking point, the character-based film is an ideal transition for Green from his recent slapstick passions to the authentic dramas that launched his career." Read my Sundance Film Festival review.

6. Elysium (Neill Blomkamp; Aug. 9th)

elysium1.jpg

Synopsis: A factory worker takes on a mission to hijack his way onto a man-made space habitat.

Trailer

Why Should You See It: While once set for a March bow, Sony thought it would be wise to position Neill Blomkamp's Elysium similarly to his debut hit, District 9. Arriving in just a week, the sci-fi blockbuster looks to be a standout of the summer, featuring Matt Damon as the lead of an actioner that, with any luck, can successfully meld big ideas with thrills. Early reviews and buzz have hinted that it doesn't reach the highs of Blomkamp's first outing -- but, if it even comes close, the film should be worth seeing.

5. The Spectacular Now (James Ponsoldt; Aug. 2nd)

the_spectacular_now.jpg

Synopsis: A hard-partying high school senior's philosophy on life changes when he meets the not-so-typical "nice girl."

Trailer

Why Should You See It: It speaks to the quality of this month's slate that one of my favorite films of the year thus far isn't even in the top three. I've been tracking the career of Miles Teller since he first caught my eye as the weight behind Rabbit Hole; three years later, the actor's finally been given that lead role he deserves. When paired alongside an equally fantastic Shailene Woodley, The Spectacular Now dares to tackle something coming-of-age films rarely do: the harsh, life-damaging realities of alcoholism and how it affects all those around you. Read my Sundance Film Festival review.

4. The World's End (Edgar Wright; Aug. 23rd)

the_worlds_end.jpg

Synopsis: Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.

Trailer

Why Should You See It: Before embarking on his biggest project yet with Marvel's Ant-Man, we're thankful that Edgar Wright was able to finish out the trilogy that launched his career. The World's End doesn't quite reach the bar set by Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, but with a blisteringly entertaining pace and a sharp script that's not afraid to reach dark places, it's perhaps Wright's most affective work. Read our review here.

3. Short Term 12 (Destin Cretton; Aug. 23rd)

short_term12.jpg

Synopsis: A 20-something supervising staff member of a foster care facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend.

Trailer

Why Should You See It: She's featured in Ponsoldt's film, too, but Brie Larson truly shines in the breakout hit of this year's SXSW. Rich in character, Short Term 12 is bound to strike a chord with most viewers as it follows her character's journey of healing -- not only herself, but the group of teenagers with whom she works. It sounds like it could veer into schmaltzy territory, but this emerging director thankfully never makes a false step. Read our SXSW review.

2. Ain't Them Bodies Saints (David Lowery; Aug. 16th)

aint_them_bodies_saints.jpg

Synopsis: The tale of an outlaw who escapes from prison and sets out across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife and the daughter he has never met.

Trailer

Why Should You See It: Aside from the masterful Before Midnight, my personal favorite feature from Sundance was writer-director David Lowery's debut feature. Ain't Them Bodies Saints is a lyrical, stunning, subdued romantic crime drama that features stand-out performances from all involved -- ranging from our main duo of Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara all the way to a supporting turn from Nate Parker. Read my Sundance Film Festival review.

1. The Grandmaster (Wong Kar-wai; Aug. 23rd)

the_grandmaster.jpg

Synopsis: The story of martial-arts master Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee.

Trailer

Why Should You See It: After an extensive wait -- not only due to its actual production, but the seven months that have gone by since its Chinese bow -- the United States is finally getting the next film from Wong Kar-wai. Coming in the form of a new cut that runs 22 minutes shorter than the mainland incarnation, we won't know what this new theatrical version holds -- so, when the time comes, check back for our take on the next picture from one of cinema's greatest artists.

I dunno......Elysium? Man I swear I haven't been to the theatre LESS than I have this year since like 2008.

Worlds End and Elysium are the ones I'm watching in theatres for sure

Will check out passion on VOD and some of those other films when they hit bluray

Spectacular Now has a surprisingly awesome script. I will for sure see that one

Whoa, David Gordon Green went back to making real movies? I never saw Snow Angels, thinking it didn't look that great and I would wait for his next one and, uh, yeah.

The World's End and The Grandmaster. That's disappointing to learn that 20 minutes were cut though from The Grandmaster. Hopefully when it's released on blu-ray, it'll be the complete version. Is it going to be subtitled?

I've actually heard decent things about Kick-Ass 2, but can't muster up too much excitement for it. We'll see. Also heard somewhat good things about The Butler, but after Daniels' track record, can't really endorse until I see it.

The movie destroyed me. So good.

Yeah, it's a nice mix of his older style and some recent humor. Definitely a good watch.

World's End... I've watched a total of 3 movies this year (all old) but this will be a glorious #4. I hope.

Dunno what else to see right now, but I'm going to be there first weekend for IMAX 3D Elysium and I'm going to watch Blue Jasmine next Monday.

Caught The Wolverine, which was fun and The Hunt last weekend which was fantastic, and the special retro showing of Fight Club this past Monday was fun too.

Definitely Elysium and The World's End for me, been waiting for these two for some time. Also going to see Rifftrax Live doing Starship Troopers on the 15th.

Oh shit, I hope it's not dubbed. I'm seeing it Monday and just asked.

Passion's trailer is terrible, but i feel like the movie could be good.

Elysium looks like it has great set design, but i wasn't a fan of District 9's writing and i feel this falls in the same trappings (if not more).
Trapped between a mockumentary and a dumb action movie.

Already saw The Grandmaster, it was pretty good, mostly visually stunning, though.

From those I have already seen Drinking Buddies / Passion / The Grandmaster

And I want to see all the rest of them. Hmm, that rarely happens.

The Spectacular Now (Woodley + Ponsoldt)
Kick-Ass 2 (enjoyed the first one)
Elysium (self-explanatory)
Ain't Them Bodies Saint (Mara + it just looks cool)
Short Term 12 (haven't heard of this until today, but it looks good and Larson!)

Another Ip Man movie? Loved the versions w/ Donnie Yen. Not sure this can top it. We'll see ...
This is a COMPLETELY different film. If you've ever seen a Wong Kar Wai movie and think about how ludicrous it is for him to direct an action movie, you'd be correct but somehow it works and turns into one of the most beautiful films I've seen this year.

Think of it as a movie framing martial arts as a unit of Chinese culture that goes back for centuries, and how it was on the verge of being lost through the cultural revolution, only to live on through the teachings of Ip Man to a pupil who would almost single-handedly revive it in pop culture and spread it to the rest of the world. It's more about the time period and the martial arts as an art, rather than Ip Man as a person.

Contrary to that trailer, there's not a lot of emphasis on punchin' in the film either, although there are plenty of fights.

Possibly Elysium as far as going to the theaters goes.

Finally a good month!

Hyped for:

Elysium
The World's End

Will watch if good:

Kick-Ass 2
2 Guns

Grandmasters is set to disappoint.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints, Grandmaster and maybe The World's End are the only ones I'm really interested in. Will catch Elysium on VOD. Feels like a weird year for film so far. Nothing has really left an impression on me. Still need to catch Act of Killing though.

Elysium and The World's End for sure, also Blue Jasmine since it opens here next weekend.

I saw The Spectacular Now last night, it was alright.

dude got a raw deal. people rarely mention him alongside directors like scorsese, spielberg, coppola etc.
not one of his movies are any where near in quality to SSC's best.
I've only seen Blowout, the Untouchables, and Carrie though, so I might not know what i'm talking about.
