    [*]Monster House 6/10
    [*]Jo Nesbø's Headhunters 7/10
[*]House of Cards Season 1 9/10

I liked Young Adult for having a character you can sympathize with, but not really like. It's quite seldom that it works out and it didn't work for me in Killing them Softly - great little monolog at the end, but the overall movie lacked one character I liked.
Whatever Works marks my first Woody Allen film and I was quite suprised how much I liked it. Somehow I had completely wrong expectations regarding his style and humor. Now I'll have to watch some of his older stuff and Midnight in Paris got bumped up in my watchlist.
The Raven was a waste of potential. Dunno if it was always written like this, but the way they tried to mimic Sherlock Holmes didn't work at all. And the end and credit roll was almost offensively bad and out of place.
I can recommend Flight to anybody for the first half hour. Best tension I watched in a long time, even if I knew how it would play out.
House of Cards is an amazing series so far, I hope season 2 won't let me down. And Fincher comes through in the first two episodes. You can see the difference in direction compared to later episodes.

Edit: I think I'll adapt the Netflix five star scale for my ratings. 10 point scala doesn't make a lot of sense when I actively circumvent movies that would end up south of 5 points.
'hated it - 'didn't like it' - 'liked it' - 'really liked it' and 'loved it' says more about a movie anyway than the difference between an 7 and an 8.

the general is a light-hearted action film about a train chase during the american civil war. it's a lot of fun, buster keaton deadpans his way through a sequence of imaginative and silly action scenes that turn two trains chasing eachother into something genuinely exciting. there's maybe a few too many obvious physical comedy bits but then there's also stuff like this http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_loybhtrO2r1qclzo6.gif

safety last was okay. the big skyscraper climbing setpiece made the whole thing.

haven't read anything in a while, but i'm going abroad next week so hopefully i'll get lots of poolside reading done.

Quarter of the way through the year, so sharing my two biggest highlights so far.

Best book:
Wonder bring R. J. Palacio. ★★★★★ -- This will become a modern classic, and it deserves the status. Deals with the life of a young boy born with significant facial deformities. Even with a loving family, he still has to face less understanding classmates and strangers. I look forward to this becoming mandatory reading for school age kids, as it strikes the ideal balance of being emotionally engaging and teaching love and acceptance for people regardless of how they look. Every bully in detention should be required to read this book.

Best movie:
Drive. ★★★★★ -- A calm, collected loner living on the fringe of society is forced to protect a girl and her son from some dangerous folks. This follows a classic archetype with the reluctant hero who just wants to protect the people he cares for and to be left alone, but finds himself forced to action. This film is slick and oozes cool, but has a very dark and sinister undertone which will shock you. Ryan Gosling continues to be the best young actor in Hollywood.

  • Vernor Vinge - A Fire Upon the Deep

Congrats! 50 books seems to be the harder part for most people, but you just powered through that in less than a quarter of the time. Pretty amazing.

Thanks! It's a bit of a change after only managing 25 books last year.

I said DAMN. Very impressive, good sir. I'm also riding the "read an hour or two every night" train and it is serving me well. I'm finishing up book #18 right now. Nothing close to what you've managed, but we're sitting in mid-March and I've read more this year than any previous one.

We're both sitting in a similar spot in terms of movies. I watch everything with my wife, so once she finishes her current project we're going to dive into the award season winners.

I used to read a lot of books, but this is the most I've read since 2007. I probably won't beat my record (224 in 2004), but I've upped my goal to 100 this year.

I'm oddly struggling with the movies now, though. I've started watching a few (Darkman, End of Watch, Tron) and I just get bored and go do something else. Maybe I should take your recommendation and watch Drive.

I agree...I've read a couple great Amazon singles this year that were 50 to 100 pages and definitely worth reading and counting.

25. Hit and Run (2012)
26. Top Secret (1984)
27. Three Amigos (1986)

It is really difficult to just name one movie and one book highlight, because I enjoyed every episode of the BBC tv series Sherlock and Skyfall was great too and I can't remember why I haven't watched The Three Amigos so far because it is really funny. And there are also a lot of book highlights so far - Something Rotten from Jasper Fforde was a great fourth part of his series and I really enjoyed reading The Dresden Files from Jim Butcher and Ender's Game - and last but not least Norwegian Wood was a great book too.

I want to read Ulysses too, but my English isn't up to par, and I'd like to avoid a translation. Is it too difficult?

I wasn't sure if I'd understand everything if I would read the book in English, so I chose the German version instead. There are a few different translations and I picked one that should be one of the best. It's not the easiest book I've ever read and there are some chapters that are incredible exhausting or absolutely uninteresting, but after about 30% I can say that I enjoy reading it.

TRON: Legacy - Finally watched it on my second attempt. The first time I tried I was thoroughly bored after 10 minutes and got distracted by something else. Glad I went back to it because it actually turned into a pretty cool effects film.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies were ok kids stuff. Wouldn't really recommend them to anyone unless they had a bunch of young kids to keep entertained for an afternoon.

The Life of Pi - I originally gave this an A, but revised that to a B after some reflection.
I just felt that there was not enough screen time given to the hyena/chef and orangutan/mother. They felt like insignificant characters in the story and once the twist was revealed, I was left a little deflated as there were not enough indications that they were actually animal representations of real people.
Maybe I am nitpicking or just didn't pay enough attention to the film. However, I still enjoyed it a lot.

Guards! Guards! - This has to be my favourite Discworld book by far (I am reading chronologically). Really enjoyed the humour and I thought the characters and subversion of the "million to one chance, but it just might work" thing was great fun. So many great quotes. It felt like I was constantly highlighting passages on my Kindle.

Nah, I felt the same, the movie was long,
but those moments with the other animals were far to short to make much out of it.
A good musical and CGI fest despite it's flaws.

Don't think I will get done with so many books, but will try the move one.

Man, you're in for a treat. I wish I could erase those two books from my memory just so that I could experience them all over again.

I don't read much SciFi (I prefer fantasy) so wasnt expecting to like hyperion anywhere near as much as I did.

I would happily put it in my top 5 of all time and am really liking where the sequel is going too.

Both of the books that I last read are not available in English at the moment. I love Moers' books. He just has such a vast imagination and so much love for writing and literature that his books are a blast to read.

The Agus book was a gift from my stepmom. It was... well... strange.

Looper was OK. I thought the whole tk aspect was a bit much though.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
New book! number9dream by David Mitchell. On a train now so I'll write a review when I get home. Haven't given up on 50 books even though I'm only 10% done.

New book:

[*] The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. ★★★ -- Came in overly hyped, left mildly disappointed. My largest complaint is that the humor felt very forced and not particularly effective. Too zany for me.

I love Hitchhiker's but found that most people I know who didn't happen upon the book organically tend to hear the praise heaped upon it and end up less than enthralled. The same thing seems to apply to Monty Python and to a lesser extent, Dr. Who, so I think it's probably something we can blame the Brits for.

Still, I'd feel better about your review if you didn't also give Ready Player One five stars, you rat bastard.
