Books
  • Dawnkins, Richard (2006), The God Delusion - ★★★
  • Fexeus, Henrik (2009), Konsten att läsa tankar - ★★★
  • Lotass, Lotta (2006), Min röst skall nu komma från en annan plats i rummet - ★★★
  • Silver, Nate (2012), The Signal and the Noise - ★★★★
  • Mitchell, David (2001), number9dream - ★★★½
  • Murakami, Haruki (2006), Kafka on the Shore - ★★★½
  • Mitchell, David (2004), Cloud Atlas - ★★★★ - Personally I feel that the movie is a great companion-piece to the book. They're very different beings and the fact that they're two ways of looking at the same things expressed in ways impossible to express in the other's medium makes it that much more worth while. A great read, a great movie and it doesn't matter in what order you experience them.
  • Woolf, Virginia (1929), A Room of One's Own - ★★★★★ - Why do men hate women? Here we have an essay written almost 100 years ago and it's just as current. I don't get the hate but I'm guessing that the principle "You know you're wrong when you have to lie to prove your point" applies to the mentality of demonsing women.
  • King, Stephen (2006), On Writing - ★★★★½ - A really good expose on what makes a writer; or rather, what makes a good "of-any-kind". Stephen King manages to make himself ordinary and very human with an honesty that's heartwarming and at the same time a very harsh guiding hand.
  • Hymowitz, Kay S. (2011) Manning Up: How the Rise of Women Has Turned Men into Boys - ★★★½ - I find it odd that I'm more and more on the way to becoming the alpha male that feminism both adore and hate--and it's working out pretty well for me. I do get what the book is saying and it hit a bit too close to comfort a couple of times. It's did however call 'Bottle Rocket' a frat-movie because it stared Owen Wilson and grouped it with Adam Sandler-movies.

  • Tron: Legacy (2010, dir. Joseph Kosinski) - ★★★½
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007, dir. Julian Schnabel) - ★★★½
  • Outlander (2008, dir. Howard McCain) - ★★★
  • The Box (2009, dir. Richard Kelly) - ★★½
  • Fish Tank (2009, dir. Andrea Arnold) - ★★★½ - There's been alot of good indie movies coming out of the UK these recent year, my favorite being Attack the Block. This one hits all the right notes and is honest about its subject. Fassbender is awesome.
  • The Conspirator (2010, dir. Robert Redford) - ★★★ - To be honest I'd rather just see Lincoln. This was entertaining but a bit stale. It played out like a well-made made-for-teevee movie but with some good Hollywood talent.
  • Youth in Revolt (2009, dir. Miguel Arteta) - ★★½ - Nothing special. Just a rather unlikeable Cera playing Cera. Really nothing special about this movie.
  • The Flowers of War (2011, dir. Yimou Zhang) - ★★★½ - Christian Bale returns to China. A very chinese movie by any standard. It's visually appealing and has some very creative cinematography while downplaying the story. Always engaging but never that deep.
  • Eden Lake (2008, dir. James Watkins) - ★★ - There's nothing wrong with showing that people are savages and there's nothing wrong with presenting that with the bleakness of apathy. What is wrong is expecting to enjoy 1½ hours of torture. I can't really dig this movie but I'm sure some will. It's put together well enough but that doesn't mean I'll enjoy it.
  • Iron Man Three (2013, dir. Shane Black) - ★★★★ - Please keep Black directing these movies. It's awesome. It's the most fun Iron Man-movie of the bunch and it's fantasticly put together. This marks the first time that a child actor has been one of the high-lights of the movie. I love the kid. Every scene is golden. Almost everything is good.
  • The Expendables 2 (2012, dir. Simon West) - ★★ - It isn't bad. It's just a mess. An uninspired mess with too many quips. Still managed to fall asleep watching it, like I did the first one. This one is better but only in the sense I actually bothered finishing it the morning after.
  • Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013, dir. J.J. Abrahms) - ★★★½ - It's a great way to tie back into the continuety of the old movies. I'd love to see more of these movies. The foreshadowing is a bit of a thing with this movie "the few and many" but it's nice how they manage to tie Carol Marcus into the legacy-timeline.
  • Indie Game: The Movie (2012, dir. Lisanne Pajot, James Swirsky) - ★★ - A bunch of unattractive guys talking to a camera for almost 2 hours. Fell asleep twice and nodded off a couple of times. It's not about anything really. It makes a few points but it's really drawn out and not really worth it.

Bonus: 10/24 TV | 17/24 Video Games | 10/24 Records

TV
  • True Blood (Season 5, 2012) - ★★½
  • Game of Thrones (Season 2, 2012) - ★★★★
  • House of Cards (Season 1, 2013) - ★★★★½
  • Boardwalk Empire (Season 2011) - ★★★½
  • Banshee (Season 1, 2013) - ★★½
  • Star Trek (Season 1, 1966-67) - ★★★★★
  • Hemlock Grove (Season 1, 2013) - ★★★½
  • Spartacus: Blood and Sand (Season 1, 2010) - ★★★½ - "It gets better" is about right for the first season. Then Andy Whitfield died. A really strong first season. One part Gladiator, one part God of War and one part 300. It can't really be faulted for anything other than being a bit sparse in the settings.
  • Girls (Season 1, 2012) - ★★★½ - It's nice to see a tv-show about women (or girls, in this case). More often than not comedy shows portray women as flawless beings that magically turn off their quirks when they meet the right guy. Here's it just four losers living loser lives and having fun doing it. Refreshing but without a real momentum.
  • The Walking Dead (Season 2, 2011-12) - ★★★★ - Better than the first season. Better momentum. Playing the videogame between the two seasons really helped the world building. I'm invested into this. A detour then back to the third season.

Video Games
  • Deadlight [PC] (2012, Tequila Works) - ★★★★
  • Middle Manager of Justice [iOS] (2012, Double Fine) - ★★★½
  • Sleeping Dogs [PC] (2012, United Front Games) - ★★★
  • Spec Ops: The Line [PC] (2012, Yager Development) - ★★★
  • The Cave [PC] (2013, Double Fine) - ★★★
  • Quantum Conundrum [PC] (2012, Airtight Games) - ★
  • God of War III [PS3] (2010, Santa Monica Studio) - ★★★
  • Iron Brigade [PC] (2011, Double Fine) - ★★★
  • The Walking Dead [PC] (2012, Telltale Games) - ★★★★
  • Machinarium [PS3] (2012, Amanita Design) - ★★★
  • Brütal Legend [PC] (2013, Double Fine) - ★★★★½
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dragonborn [PC] (2013, Bethesda Softworks) - ★★★
  • Tropico 4 [PC] (2011, Haemimont Games) - ★★★½
  • StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm [PC] (2013, Blizzard Entertainment) - ★★★★
  • BioShock Infinite [PC] (2013, Irrational Games) - ★★★★
  • Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception [PS3] (2011, Naughty Dog) - ★★★
  • Guacamelee! [PS3] (2013, Drinkbox Studios) - ★★★★ - This is the way all platformers should be made. With a lot of love for the genre. Pop-culture references, tight controls and some smart art direction make for a really great game. Also the best Metroidvania in a long while.

Music
  • Blood Donation - Mariam the Believer (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★½
  • Push the Sky Away - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (2013, Spotify) - ★★★½
  • Pale Green Ghosts - John Grand (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★½
  • The Next Day - David Bowie (2013, Spotify) - ★★★½
  • The Golden Age - Woodkid (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★
  • Woman - Rhye (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★
  • Tandem Sky - Tandem Sky (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★½ - Great debut album with some really good songs. Hurricane and D.O.M.A. stand out as the truely great songs. I'm keeping an eye on them.
  • Rob Zombie - Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor (2013, Spotify) - ★★★½ - As far as Zombie this is a solid album. Never really that creative but being the showman he is I'm looking forward to seeing it live.
  • The Knife - Shaking the Habitual (2013, Spotify) - ★★★½ - Their greats are great but there's just so much fillers. They'll never reach again their peak (Silent Shout) if they keep this up.
  • Wire - Change Becomes Us (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★ - Solid album all around and makes for some great listening.
  • Bonobo - The North Borders (2013, Spotify) - ★★★ - Not at the Black Sands heights and I'm not really in awe as I was back then. But some nice beats regardless.

★ = Bad, ★★ = Okay, ★★★ = Good, ★★★★ = Very good, ★★★★★ = Brilliant

Such a great conclusion and such a good delivery. Really a step above most fantasy/scifi out there.

Can anyone tell me if Endymion is up to the same standard?

Anyone got a recommendation for my next book?

I have Eric! by Terry Pratchett, Before they are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie, Old Man's War by John Scalzi, The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson, or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll on my Kindle.

I am also open to other suggestions if anyone cares to recommend something.

Eric! is, in my opinion, the weakest of Pratchett's books. On the other hand, I really liked Old Man's War.

I went with Old Man's War and after three chapters I am really getting into the writing style. I usually find books written in the first person to be a bit odd. However, I really like the way it's done here.

Such a great conclusion and such a good delivery. Really a step above most fantasy/scifi out there.

Can anyone tell me if Endymion is up to the same standard?

It's nowhere near as good. However, the characters are pleasant enough.

New movie:

[*] Silver Linings Playbook. ★★★★ -- Excellent, quirky love story of two people learning how to cope with their mental illness. While it's quite funny, it never stoops to poke fun of the conditions, and there are plenty of moments that help convey the paranoia and stress involved. I might be in the minority, but I felt like Cooper was better in the film than Jennifer Lawrence...if anyone deserved the Oscar it was him.

Azrael - 15/50 books | 69/50 movies

Books

15. The Pluto Files by Neil deGrasse Tyson ★★★

Movies

65. Our Very Own (1950) ★★
66. 3 Ninjas Kick Back ★
67. Seven Psychopaths ★★★★
68. Iron Man 3 ★★★
69. Silver Linings Playbook ★★★

So, since I'm doing so much reading and wanted to expand my social circle, I joined a book club that has meetups at local restaurants, and The Pluto Files is one of two books I signed up for this month (the other, Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut, I'm currently reading).

The Pluto Files is a history of Pluto from its discovery in 1930 to its demotion to "dwarf planet" status by the International Astronomers Union. At its heart, the controversy is one of semantics rather than science, and the book makes a good case that the entire classification of "planet" is outdated and gives us a distorted view of our solar system and the universe. Why do terrestrial planets like Earth and Mars share the same classification as jovian planets like Jupiter and Saturn? Does the very concept of planet bias us to place less importance on other objects which should, in some cases, like the moons Io and Titan, hold more interest to us than planets?

The debate seems driven by a desire to as much as possible preserve the status quo, as astronomers were resistant to demote Pluto and change the number of designated planets from nine to eight until recent discoveries would have left them no choice but to classify the asteroid Ceres and trans-Neptunian object Eris as planets, with many more TNO planets to follow, so rather than go from potentially 9 to 20 planets they opted to go from 9 to 8. The new requirement that a planet's mass dominate its orbit, which demoted Pluto, seems arbitrary, and I don't feel the issue has been settled. How will astronomers handle co-orbital planets (planets sharing an orbit) if they are discovered throughout the universe? It has been theorized that our moon is the remnant of a co-orbital planet that crashed into Earth. As to be expected from Neil deGrasse Tyson, the subject is presented with great humor, and it's an entertaning book to read.

Our Very Own is an old movie about a girl coming to terms with the discovery that she is adopted. It has a bit of an after-school special feel to it, and social attitudes have changed so much in 60 years that it's pretty hokey. The cattiness of the two sisters fighting over a boy is amusing anyway.

In case you're wondering, no, I did not choose to see 3 Ninjas Kick Back. I sometimes create transcripts of movies as part of my job. I probably shouldn't even include crap like this on my list, but I do put down every movie I see. I imagine some kids might like this movie, but they don't know any better. As C.S. Lewis said, "A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest."

Seven Psychopaths is a fantastic black comedy with a great cast and writing.
"Friends don't make their friends die." "Psychopathic friends do."
is one of my favorite lines in a movie I've seen this year. I also really liked In Bruges, so I'll have to make a note to see everything from Martin McDonagh from now on.

Iron Man 3 gets the franchise back on track after the disappointing Iron Man 2, but still fails to live up to the original. I think my biggest problem with Iron Man 3 is Tony Stark was more fun when he was an alcoholic narcissist. Now he's suffering PTSD after his fight with aliens in The Avengers (seriously), doesn't drink, fights with his girlfriend, and is saddled with a kid sidekick. I don't want to be bummed out by a superhero movie like that. Just keep it entertaining without getting campy, like Iron Man 1 and The Avengers managed to do.

Silver Linings Playbook is a decent romantic comedy about two broken people finding happiness with each other. It starts off very promising, but veers into cliche territory with the dance competition and football betting.

New book:

[*] Uncanny X-Force (issues 1-35). ★★★★½ -- Just completed the entire Rick Remender series, and I have to say this is the greatest X-Men run I've ever read. Superbly plotted and executed, the payoff at the end is unbelievably good. The basic plot follows Wolverine and his "rogue" team as they attempt to stop the rise of Apocalypse. There's murder, mysticism, time travel, and Deadpool delivering the humor.

Having been on a long hiatus from comics until about six months ago, I had never read anything with Fantomex in it. He's now my favorite character in the X universe, surpassing Nightcrawler. I can't wait until Marvel packages this up nicely in a giant omnibus for me to purchase.

You really had never seen the original Star Wars trilogy?

Serious questions.

How old are you?

How had you never seen any of these movies?

Have you seen the prequel trilogy?

What did you think of them?

Have you seen the Indiana Jones films?

I ask because the Star Wars films were such a large part of my formative years that I can't imagine what it would be like to have grown up without ever seeing them.

I'm assuming it is a generational/age thing.

I'm 20. I saw the prequel trilogy first in Cinema when they came out and a couple times since then. I always somewhat enjoyed them though it was kinda obvious they were poor films on the whole. As the for the originals I'd never seen them all the way through, just bits and pieces. For the most part i knew the story although seeing the Death Star exploding was crazy since I assumed that was the finale of the trilogy :p

Seen all the Indy films, really enjoy them (though the 4th for comedic reasons) although ToD is hard to rewatch with that annoying kid.

Before I started Uni I don't think I knew anyone who talked about seeing the original Star Wars which I imagine is why my interest was never peaked.

Thanks man. As I said, I assumed it was a generational thing.

I'm 35 and those movies are such a massive part of my generation that it is hard to fathom that there are people who haven't seen them.

I guess it's the same with video games. It's hard for me to get my head around how some people have never played the original Super Mario Bros.

I feel old now... :-(

Ok, so technically I ♥ Huckabees was a re-watch, but I did not remember anything about the movie other than the fact that I did watch it years ago. Hell I didn't even remember who was starring in it and first time around I watched the dubbed version so as far as I'm concernd this was a fresh experience. If someone minds that I put it on my list just speak up and I delete it.
That being said, this movie is awesome. I wished the DVD had an audio-commentary so I could have watched it again to catch some more of the allusions and hidden (or not so hidden) meanings.

The Frighteners was OK. Nothing too special though.

Awesome. Not strictly necessary as a coda to the Book of the New Sun, which I thought wrapped up nicely on its own, but it's damn good. Definitely make sure to read it.

Thank you, I definitely will. :) I love Gene Wolfe. The Book of the New Sun series is something special.

Abhorsen was really goos, though I thought it dragged a bit in the ending. All in all I's say that Lirial was my favorite out of the trilogy.

La marche du crabe was a cute little graphic novel It is the first part of a trilogy and I'm really looking forward for the second book to finally be translated to German.

World War Z, man, what a boring piece of shit. I've read video game books more interesting. I can't believe that thing got any sort of praise. Sociopolitical commentary my ass. Parker was equally awful. Not even "so bad it's good", it was just idiotic. The Last Stand was a bit better (than crap) but pretty boring for an action flick.

  5. The Fall of Hyperion - Dan Simmons (A)
  6. Old Man's War - John Scalzi (A)

So Old Man's War would have to be one of my favourite books ever. I loved the pace and the way the whole thing just felt fresh and not like a retread of the same old cliches. In many ways the writing reminded me of Joe Haldeman's The Forever War, but it did have a tone and life of its own that made it really resonate with me.

As far as movies, I was forced to sit through some utter trash by my girlfriend (Blone Ambition and So Undercover). However, I did manage to convince her to watch My Brother the Devil, which is a great movie from the UK. Really worth seeing if you are at all interested in the migrant experience, especially the second generation and the trials and tribulations of being poor, the wrong colour and wanting to break out of a bad situation.

I am heading off now to see Iron Man 3 and maybe Star Trek after that if I am not too tired.

Saw Iron Man 3.

It was ok. Story pretty much went nowhere and they delayed any real action until the end. It was funny as hell though.

New book:

[*] The Black Company by Glen Cook. ★★★★★ -- Easily in my top 5 fantasy novels ever. I instantly feel in love with the world, the lore, magic system, military camaraderie, and the dark undertones. I like how there are no "good" or "bad" characters...even the likeable protagonist wears shades of gray. This is the first book I've read by Cook, but certainly will not be the last.
