A quick history and timeline of Derek Smart vs. Chris Roberts (Star Citizen)

You know, I take it back. Either the chance that Derek Smart is ralph pootawn is 100%, or the chance that ralph pootawn was Derek Smart is 100%. Because all Derek Smart statistics are true fact.

I thought people were kidding, but no, the legends were true. The man is actually some sort of internet-based Lovecraftian horror.
He probably wishes he's as important, powerful and influential as a Lovecraftian horror.

He's more like a real-life version of the Gorilla Warfare guy. Or the game industry's equivalent of a certain disbarred lawyer obsessed with game violence.

I think people should look at that Line of Defense trailer on its Steam page.

It's just sad. The fact that anyone is comparing that to Star Citizen of all things speaks volumes about that person.

Exactly, how can I take anything about this seriously when Line of Defense already exists.

I think derek smart is pretty terrible.

But i think people SHOULD be skeptical of star citizen. theres a ton of money there. A ton. And the ONLY return backers are going to see from their investment is a game. The quality of that game is under scrutiny till we all have it.

As for why other new outlets havent run anything from this story, a major one just got caught running an uncharted 4 preview that was actually uncharted 2. lets not pretend game journalism is hard hitting and far reaching.

Both Polygon and Kotaku have run incredibly well made and critical article's on star citizen.

This article is shit. Still.

I just did a search and as far as I can tell, there's no OT for Line of Defense MMO.

According to Derek on the game's Steam Forum it will be final before year's end.

Maybe it's time that someone that bought early access can make a thread about the game itself?

Agree 100%. Criticism of Star Citizen and CIG is completely fair game. I have my own concerns, but the real issue is the underhanded accusations based on nothing but the word of some anonymous sources. There's also the elephant in the room of Derek's intentions of starting this battle with CIG that included threatening lawsuits instead of simply inquiring. Why is this so personal to him? Why the hyperbole and inflammatory rhetoric? Why did he appoint himself the leader of this concern campaign given that he is a competitor of CIG?

So

No one.

The game is a MMO and the max concurrent users it has un the last months is the huge number of 2.
It also has the huge number of copies sold possibly less than 1000.

I figured that someone on this forum might have bought access but looking at those numbers you're most likely right.

It would be such a thread, though.

This post in the SA thread is getting some attention.

and the first post was just updated to include this:

For context, "DickWulf" there is referring to Accelewraith, a prominent supporter of SC (frequently opposing Derek) who has backed for 20k and had previously posted on reddit about struggling with depression.

Well, those forums are aptly named. A fitting place for Derek to dwell.
Well, those are the same forums that took it upon themselves to crowd fund Doobie's Dog House BarBQ, and only after funding him found out he's rather far right and RACIST. Many laughs were had at their own expense.

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3571910
Just go to the end of the thread for laughs.
Look's like Doobie got himself a copy of Dropsy the Clown though.

DickWulf is a creepy guy who keeps harassing women by sending them dickpicks, his dick is on Something Awful because he sent it to a members wife, but CIG banned the guy who complained about him from their convention because DickWulf is such a big backer.
WOW, what! I have to look up more about that.

-Edit:

WOW, what! I have to look up more about that.

As far as I can tell, there's nothing solid to back that up. People keep repeating things as fact and that builds on itself and gets more detailed as they go, but the material it's based on is really weak.

---

Kate Russell's parody video got DMCA'd after all. After he said it wouldn't happen:
https://twitter.com/katerussell/status/654352583931371520
"Spoken to @dsmart we’re cool. Good sense of humour & isn't flagging my vid. Plus now knows where ‘make video private’ button is on YT ;)"

He claims it was an accident:
https://twitter.com/dsmart/status/654393535907672064
"@Gamewiz_X don't panic. just had a chat with @katerussell to figure it out. they removed the copycats, as all were flagged on Mon. am on it"

Now to see if it comes back.

Edit2: Derek commented on the KiA thread about it (they're not pleased):
https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAc...ipdrama_derek_smart_issues_bogus_dmca/cw02kc7

Looking a bit further down: "I don't give two shits about your stupid GamerGate bullshit. It has NO place in this discussion."
Burning some bridges there.

The best part about this is that he just keeps going with it, even though he's just digging a deeper hole. XD

But whatever, it's not really on topic or about Derek Smart anyways. Wulf denies it of course, the logs were deleted, and CIG is never going to say anything about it.

Quite a fair look at the current state of Line of Defense: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBbv24IK5tg

He's able to walk around the station, teleport to the surface from the airlock, and walk around the suface and try shooting some things. There are a few static NPC models placed around which don't move and aren't affected by the shots.

That's a very decent look at LoD - a game I probably would of purchased if Derek didn't begin his holy crusade against SC...but holy hell, thank gawd I didn't. I know it's in EA, but it truly looks horrible.

Smart should shut the hell up and focus on his own game. After this I can't see why ANYTHING he has to say about SC is relevant in any way.

You're an obsessive lunatic and your earrings looks silly

Anyone with a full functioning brain cell is already well aware of how full shit you are. You're pretending people don't have more than a decade of evidence and frankly it's getting incredibly tiring to see you propel yourself up onto this pedestal of higher intelligence and pretending that anyone who doesn't agree with you is in some way stupid, when it's incredibly clear who the stupid one is. Since we're on the topic of justification, justify why you keep banning people on Steam for reporting problems in your game.

Why was the first guy banned and the second guy not?

I cannot believe that there's paid DLC for this "game" while it's still in (very) Early Access:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/322153/ - $59.99 for a weapons pack for a game with not alot, if anything, to shoot at the moment. That's one of 4 weapons packages available to purchase. Incredible.

The reviewer is clearly attempting to be as unbiased as possible yet Derek can't help but attack him. He, like his games, are truly pathetic.

MUnited83

For you.
It is amazing that the idiot has been working on Line of Defense for 5 years and the game is still worse than some crappy Early Access games made in a couple of months.

Unbelievable.

The arrogance and hypocrisy Derek displays is astounding. So the game is only in early access so Derek can test a fucking button. Wow. That explains the hostility towards feedback.

You know what, fine, I'll just assume that game development is hard and not everything goes to plan. That sometimes you miss release dates and features like vehicles and combat might end up taking longer to implement. If Derek feels charging for DLC when there is so little gameplay, is justified, then so be it. His "game" deserves a chance to stand on its own merits whenever he decides to finish it. I wish him the best of luck.

I can't wrap my head on the idea that someone would actually fork over tens of thousands of dollars for something that may or may not actually be fully produced on an unspecified time in an uncertain future.

That's just... wow.

Oh poor Derek why do people keep reviewing the software he's selling and not the fever dream that keeps him up at night?

This has been his response to literally every piece of criticism ever, he is the personification of every negative impulse you've ever had towards bad feedback. LoD is old enough now that we can expect it to be 'launched' and abandoned soon for the next DS pipe dream. A developer unequalled in his own mind.

Actually, I believe he offers sage advice:

You should go get a refund before you run it for too long and lose the opportunity to get one.

I remember him from usenet, he was a prolific participant in in the "3dfx vs. TNT" debate.

I don't remember his arguments, or even which side he was defending. All I remember is the sheer volume of his posts. Oh, that and his "Derek Smart, Ph.D." signature.

Yup, it is what I said it is a couple of pages earlier: a small collection of terrible maps. The game-mechanics are non-existent and what little is there is laughably awful and bug-ridden.

I could buy a couple of crappy standard assets and slap something like that together in Unity within mere days. Hell, it'd probably better that that heap of malfunctioning shit that Derek put up for sale on Steam.

It's a fraud. Very simple.

I was blocked by him on my first tweet back during the "Escapist clarify sources" thread." I was a little pissed back then about some of the comments Derek made, what with the Glass Houses angle going on with this.

It's interesting what Lee says in the beginning of that video, that he has only recently become aware, like many of us, that Line of Defense even exist, and only because of Derek's controversy with Star Citizen. Unfortunately for LOD, I don't think it was attention this game need being in it's current state (although it has been in development for 5 years). I mean there isn't anything to actually do in the game. LOD is like a tech demo from 2006.

There is something to be said about a developer trying to dev crunch after five years of development and multiple extended release push backs spending this much time on social media. I don't develop video games but I'm pretty sure this is not common practice in the industry for those trying to push a game out, in fact, I'm pretty sure it's the opposite. This will all be the more interesting a year from now when we find out how much Star Citizen and Line of Defense end up succeeding or failing.

I made the mistake of looking at Derek's feed once, I think he makes something like 180 tweets a day, who could possibly read all that?

EDIT: Ah, his stats show a meager 106 tweets per day. I was way off.

Derek was running a subreddit focused on digging up dirt on the user Accelerwraith (the one who had sent the FOIA request which revealed there was no ongoing FTC investigation as Derek had claimed). That subreddit was just shut down and it looks like Derek's account is now banned. According to this post, Derek had doxxed him by posting some of his job history, which is the kind of thing the reddit admins will act on.

Remember, he is Derek Smart, Super Genius, so he has more than enough time in and around not actually producing working games to doxx someone who had the unmitigated gall to actually prove DS wrong about something.

Par for the course.

EDIT: Also, considering how hard it actually is to get shadowbanned off of Reddit these days? That's some sick overachieving.

Derek's twitter account may be suspended now. It's unclear whether it's temporarily or permanently. Edit: still posting at the moment.

Accelerwrath just made this reddit post: "To Derek Smart, Love Xæriq Knight"

with the text as simply "Checkmate".
(the post is deleted now, so the text is no longer visible, but the comments and title are still there)

At the same time, he posted: https://twitter.com/Accelerwraith/status/656530123550646272
"Werewolf Night ‏@Accelerwraith
@TheKevinDent You, uh.... Should check your email."
and Kevin replied "he has? 0o"

In the comments on that reddit thread, someone posted this:

Derek's last tweet was about 5 minutes before this was all posted.

Update: https://twitter.com/TheKevinDent/status/656543456295321600
"Derek's Dad Kev Dent ‏@TheKevinDent
Um reports are coming in that Derek Smart is getting banned from Twitter....... I will just be over here with a @%#* eating grin"

Update 2: nope, he's still posting. Kevin says it takes 24-48 hours for the suspension to take effect.

Update 3: Time's up and nothing happened.
