I’m not usually a fan of gore, or of horror, which made me nervous about Bloodborne - I’m still not convinced that I’ll be able to get through it mentally unscathed. This isn’t dark fantasy any more. It’s more gruesome than that. But it’s not gross-out - there’s no viscera gushing from wounds, no gore-porn, nothing that made my nose wrinkle in disgust. I’ve been scared and occasionally shocked by the things I’ve seen so far in Bloodborne, but not repulsed. This shouldn’t be surprising, really, as this is a Miyazaki game, and rarely has there been a game creator more devoted to aesthetic beauty - even if that beauty is also gruesome.

This is me, so it is reassuring to hear that it isn't too gross. I enjoyed the aesthetic of the souls games hugely and although this looks amazing I'm still a little wary.

Also if it is too bloody I can't play in front of the kids and I really need to be able to if I want to get the hours in :)

I will borrow it.
Only 1 game isn't enough.

I’m with you man. This is clearly the only worthwhile PS4 game that exists or ever will exist in the future. Not enough to justify a console purchase, IMO. Maybe if a sequel to Bloodborne is released there will be 2 games on the system but I'm not sure if that's enough either. The system need at least 3-4 games on it.

Couldn't you turn blood off in the previous games?

How much mainstream appeal do you guys think Bloodborne has? I think vested gamers (i.e. anybody who frequents gaming sites or forums) were already on the wagon since its E3 reveal, but what about the gaming masses? If it's any indication, how did Demon Souls/Dark Souls do (sales-wise)? I ask because critical acclaim doesn't equate to financial success. Do you think Bloodborne will be a true system seller the way FF7 was?

Hmm. I get my review copy on wednesday, it's going to be one hell of a weekend trying to get some video content edited in time for a meaningful publishing date. Not a bad weekend, just an intense one.

Please explain to peace my soul.

Basically instead of a shield to avoid getting damaged altogether, you have to jump in and attack to recover the health you once lost.

Also read an interesting mechanic in the full Eurogamer preview, that I wish I hadn't read which furthers this philisophy.

Sounds different enough that I wouldn't consider it a true souls game, but that doesn't mean it is bad. I really hope dell.com ships by release date, this is why I bought a PS4.

I actually like the description of the playstyle more. I may have done heavy armor + s/s in the first game but I went through DS2 power stancing 100% and had a blast (well, except for ruined sentinels, I died like 20 times :( ).

It's not getting anything close to the marketing push FF7 got, and the nature of the game limits it's mass appeal. But I also think it will benefit greatly from all the elbow room it has from other major releases.

Souls games are solid sellers. I believe Demon's did over 500k worldwide while being ultra niche and both Dark souls games sold over 2 million

If you die you, an enemy may pick up your blood echoes.
If they pick it up you have to kill it to get them back.
So I'd imagine that if you die at a boss you have no choice but to kill it.

The game's combat is sped up so you can no longer play conservatively or you will get overwhelmed.
You have to kill to survive.
If you're worried about difficulty there is no need for concern based on what Miyazaki had said in an interview earlier this year plus what the producer said and the impressions of those who got the game early.

Only 1 game isn't enough.

I respect that. Being old school 1 awesome game has always been enough to buy a system but always with the knowledge that I will indeed have more games to play down the line and already on the system. So of course if one is 100% certain outside of Bloodborne nothing on the PS4 will ever appeal to them then I think that person would be insane to spend hundred of £/$ for 1 game.

I'm glad Souls games (including Bloodborne) are anything but "legit AAA experience"s. They basically do everything AAA games don't.

I understand, AAA meaning is bastardized these days but for me it always meant fantastic gameplay experiences, variety and depth. A game like Axiom Verge for me also counts as AAA because "indie" isn't a word in my vocabulary. Games are games are games.

Surprised the embargo isn't up yet.

Sony usually has a week-early embargo for games they're confident in and a week-of embargo for games they're not. But I also feel like they're weirdly scared of advertising Bloodborne - the all-CG reveal at E3, the skipped TGS reveal the previous year, the weird commercial, embargoed trailers, etc. It seems like everyone agrees it's an amazing game but Sony seems deathly afraid of talking about it.

It's like they still view FROM's Soul-types as extremely niche games.

The Embargo is just like Dark Souls 2 though.

That had a preview event a few weeks before and reviews were embargoed until release

And i don't know what you mean about this we just had a month full of information by IGN. It is the most i have seen a souls game advertised.

Which weapon combinations are you guys looking forward the most? I'm very interested in the original saw-cleaver, the axe and the chain-sword and I'm sure I'm going to spend hours just trying all possible combinations.

This seems tough to hit embargo date with this sized game. I'm surprised Sony hasn't sent review copies a few weeks in advance so that reviewers have enough time to really learn everything about the game and give it a proper review.

I can easily see this giving me nightmares now, who the hell knows what it would do to children!

Pretty excited after hearing from the spoiler thread and the media previews. Hoping to snag my copy a few days early if everything goes as planned. If not then type zero will be the game that keeps be busy and not thinking about bloodborne.

Threaded Cane or Stake Driver at the moment. May change depending on what else comes up, or if bloodtinge scaling actually allows you go go DPS with guns (in which case, hello Reiterpallasch).

uh, it happened already with DkS2 and probably other souls games.

scared or not confident? Lol. also after the success and growth in popularity that Dark Souls had I have no idea how they could see this game as an extremely niche game. infact, they don't.

Same here!

oh yeah that game is so legit. knack, another reason....

I know you're likely joking, but I love me some knack. That game was, is, awesome fun to play with my goddaughters. I got a platinum in that.

OT: I pre-ordered the CE and the digital edition. This game is gonna get some nice sales.

I have only read the Eurogamer piece so far, but it was utterly pointless. Not a shred of new information and nothing that a person couldn't have deduced ages ago from playing/watching the alpha, or IGNs first 18 minutes last month. Are all the articles like this?

I assumed at this point the press would be previewing some other area of the game. It really highlights how needless this kind of write-up is. It's 1% informative, 99% wank.

The framerate seems to be really solid, none of the previews in the OT mentioning any problems.

Did any of the previews say anything negative at all?

It's a tricky topic, the issue of when reviewers should/do receive their review copies. Many games go gold extremely close to release date these days, and then, if they want to send out a physical review disc, which many companies do, it has to go through another step of production to get it into the hands of a press outlet.

Rest assured, I will take one for the team and go without sleep this weekend. It'll be a hard sacrifice, but I will soldier on.

I ctrl+f'ed the articles, no mentioning at all about the framerate

absolutely. if you have a ps4 & the cash, why wouldn't you check out bloodborne? it's not like there's a bunch of other releases complicating things...
