Doesn't even need to be so tight.
They already have a good idea of sales from preorder numbers in the months prior.
Maybe they wanted to make sure. It could have reached a 9:1 digital sales ratio.

Darrell Gallagher, boss of Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics, has quit the company.
Gallagher also served as Square Enix's head of product development and western studios, responsible for overseeing all of the publisher's output developed outside of Japan.
Crystal Dynamics veterans Scot Amos and Ron Rosenberg have replaced Gallagher as co-studio heads, positions which the pair have been acting in for "a few months" already.
Nevertheless, Square Enix described the transition as "seamless".
This year Square Enix's western division has published Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft Go, Life is Strange and Just Cause 3.
But it will be Gallagher's service to the Tomb Raider franchise for which he is most noteworthy.

This happened months ago. This had no bearing on any such deal.
Wasn't the MS Tomb raider deal announced E3 2014 when he was still head?
He'll be officially on the MS payroll soon if his past actions show us anything.
Interesting timing.
Wouldn't be surprising.
Also, the people in this thread who think that he got fired: if you quit your job today, how much longer are you contractually obligated to stay on?
Hope these guys first decision is to reboot Legacy of Kain series.
Let's wait for the other versions to appear before declaring it a sales failure. Check the OT, most people that has actually played the game think it's fantastic and much much better than TR2013, and with every new version it's going to get a new boost with positive feedback, it may not be on any monthly sales top list but I bet it's going to keep selling okay for a long time just because of the actual quality of the game. I'm currently going for a 100% play-through and right now I'd easily say it's one of my favorite games of the year, I won't be surprised if it's seen on the GOTY lists of PC and PS4 owners next year. Sad to see someone lose the job because of a strange exclusivity deal when the game is still great.Part of me wonders if the poor handling of Tomb Raider has them looking at new ideas. A 3rd Tomb Raider game isnt going to be the one that finally sells a bunch after the baggage this reboot as built up.
Not sure Legacy of Kain carries a lot of weight outside of very hardcore circles but they have teased that one now and again. Maybe they are tossing ideas at the wall.

I'm not too shocked.
Many studios tend to only work on one brand these days, so if you want to do anything else, you have to actually move studios.
SE announced the exact duration of the ROTR exclusivity deal months before the game released which indicates SE weren't happy about the deal back then, the timing of everything is eerily suspicious.
We should not assume so. But this is the position who takes the fall if something like that were to happen. I think it's fair that eyebrows are raised.
Somebody got fired!
Is it safe to assume this is fallout from the exclusivity deal with Microsoft for the last Tomb Raider game?
He did a fantastic job with the new TR games, so I wish him success in his future endeavors.
Not going to happen, but I wish he was starting a new studio and partnering with MS for a Perfect Dark reboot as a third-person action adventure. He definitely has the experience to do it and it would be great to see that franchise return.

Will be interesting to see what TR3 deal is gonna be.
Not so sure. When was the last time we heard of the Xbox team hiring a new creative director or investing in a new studio? I know Mojang was early this year, but other than that I can't remember any big hires or investments on the gaming side of of things within MS.
Will be interesting to see what TR3 deal is gonna be.
MS spent $2.5bn on Mojang last year, went on a new studio opening period between Team Dakota, Lift London, MGS Vancouver (Black Tusk -> The Coalition) and MGS Victoria to ramp up for this gen, obviously not all of those worked out particularly well.
Also they got in people like Joe Staten and Casey Hudson, i'd say they were doing alright for hires, although Darrell seems more like manager/publishing side guy than a developer
Yeah! I remember that. IIRC, not all of them are/were dedicated for game development.

Thank you for the reminder, but what about more recently like this year? It seems they're focused on more second party deals than in house studio investments.

the conspiracy is strong with posters in this thread
gamescom 2014
the theories here aren't very convincing when you guys are bringing straight up wrong info to the table.
Well CD will probably need either Sony or ms to bankroll tr3 after what is looking like an epic drop in sales between tr1 and tr2. The ps4 and PC future releases won't reverse the sales trend. It will be Sony exclusive and everyone will be okay with that.

Isn't CD working on a new IP/Another game?
Usually people leaves their position after the job is done.

This is going to turn into another Rise of the Tomb Raider failure thread isn't it?
