There is no true alternative to gaf, I have looked. Particularly hard during the downtime. The other options are....not good.
Neogaf will recover from this, I am sure of it.

Every GAF alternative site has been a complete fucking shit hole. Every single one.
There is something far more effective than downvoting, although the thread I used to link to vanished with off-topic.
There's a Greasemonkey script that allows you to both hide GAF threads and filter out thread titles that had specific words in them. If you weren't interested in threads involving a particular politician, for example, you could filter their name out and poof! They were banished from OT.
It allowed for a tailored GAF that wasn't quite as powerful as subscribing to specific subreddits, but still made for a more enjoyable experience if you're not interested in Nintendo or whatever.

Previous alternatives were made by banned users. This one is being made by users who chose to leave voluntarily. I think that is quite the distinction.

these ban requests are just ridiculous. why don't people just log off, delete your cookies, and never login here again? even if you're doing it as a protest, you're not making that much of an impact.
with that said, this forum has easily the best internet communities I've ever been a part of. WrestleGAF, Kpop, Japan, MMA, FGC, JRPGs, Moba, and even PoliGAF have really fucking cool people and I enjoy the hell out of the discussions I've had over the past decade. I could give two shits about mods or admins here because I know that whatever they do doesn't effect what we do as communities.
with that said, this forum has easily the best internet communities I've ever been a part of. The starting community of solid posters might be enough, but a good alternative forum still has to have both the near-magical combination of fair, consistent, and strict moderation as well as the financial solvency to have a chance if and when the population and traffic becomes large enough. The odds aren't great, but I hope someone can finally pull it off after all of this time. Not sure this place can ever recover as long as the owner remains the same at this point.
I mean seriously? They're extremely intent on letting us know being here is enabling something..while still being here. What the actual fuck.

I'm glad it's back up, the gaming news is top notch. I'm going to miss some of the boring threads in OT though, Home Buying and DIY are two that I frequented quite a bit
I don't think I'll waste the time getting to know them, something tells me their stay here will be brief.

I've already voiced my disapproval of EL's actions, but why should I care about an incident involving a guy who was all of 20 years old at the time? What he did is not okay in the slightest, but highlighting this as some kind of recent moral failure is reaching. I should hope you apply the same purity test to everyone you associate with, ensuring they've lived a perfect, mistake-free existence before you so much as speak to them.

agreed..despite the controversial issue,i find neogaf only place where people cant talk and discuss about gaming seriously..and not only serious,also with knowledge,know current situation and had good opinion...hard to find these quality at other place despite not everything gaffers said that i agree...
I think it will recover, somewhat. I also think it will just have new faces replacing the old. It'll take time, but it'll make it. I also think the new sites will find out how tough it is to really run a forum, from the financial standpoint to the moderation/complaints etc. Oh and security of users.
Give it a week or two here and I think it'll settle down and out.
Where's the check for my share of the ad revenue then?

It's weird, reading some of these posts. I joined GAF because 1UP went a long while ago. Lurking for years, I finally got a permanent email and joined the most active gaming forum I've ever experienced in my life. My opinions didn't always resonate, but I rarely if ever backed down and I haven't been banned. I consider myself a reasonable person.
As years went by, I spent less time on Gaming side, and started checking out OT; I never fell out of love with gaming in general, but I got older and priorities shifted, my gaming time and up-to-date status lapsed and interest in other areas of life broadened. OT is a great read, a workout in restraint (oh yes, shitty/stupid opinions are ignored/dogpiled, just like in Gaming, but... objectively? Yeah), and 'rented' by some of the smartest people you would like to converse with. It was bliss, basically.
The weirdness comes from the fact that I don't recognize most of the posters here. Very few from when I was heavy in Gaming, even less from OT. That means two things to me: Most of the people who aren't bothered by the loss of the OT have spent little to zero time there (not that there is anything wrong with that), and that my time with Gaming side may have expired. There isn't anything unnatural about the changing of the guard, and a new audience will provide new ideas and conversations. Fresh blood.
I just get this real numb feeling thinking of all the personalities I came to associate with GAF no longer posting on either side. I hope, with time, the older GAF community and the administration can come to a resolution and we get everything back to the way it was. This is a disjointing experience, to say the least.

Well, I've been here for a decade and pretty active at both Gaming and OT and I also don't recognize you. I don't know if you recognize me.
GAF is... was?... a huge place.
Though, I am saddened by the fact that a lot of people I know are now leaving. As for me, I don't know, I am still considering about things.
Neogaf will recover as it has before. We just need good moderators and the community will grow again. I bet some of those that left will come back with another username or still lurk. This is neogaf after all
