Second one is boxart material, and epic boxart material with a bit more artsy going on.
Love it.

Had to drive almost 200 km, but it's in my hands.

Will post some impressions later on, but consider that I'm among those who loved the multiplayer.
To be honest whilst I disliked Doom 3's big focus on narrative, I was always fascinated with Doom's story as a kid. I was actually really looking forward to the movie until they turned it into Resident Evil!
The Doom movie was great, when it was called Event Horizon
When people have finished downloading the 45gb that isn't in the retail box.
Is this correct, that the retail version lacks the actual game data?
Yep, on PC it does.Is this correct, that the retail version lacks the actual game data?
Contains a single disc. Download of additional files from Steam (total amount 45 GB) is required to run the game.

That's how Bethesda rolls these days.

Well, the included disc has some data, but there'd need to be five or six more for retail copies to have all of it (depending on the degree to which Steam can compress the data depots). I'd expect this to become increasingly common among particularly large (40GB+) games.
Gamespot have some SP footage :

This game looks atrocious with a controller, I mean this is so slow....
The PC version demoed impressed me greatly with its speed and focus on precision, it's actually amazing to see such a difference between PC and consoles level of playability.
I'm so torn on this game. On one hand that trailer looked awesome, on the other hand the MP and SP footage I have seen looks kind of uninspired.
So why on earth don't they use a Blu-Ray disc which can easily store as much? Let those who own a drive install it like any other sane physical install, and those without a drive download it online. It's literally what the format was intended for.

Won't they have a steam sale for the entire doom franchise to celebrate this game's release? I was hoping for a sale to buy doom 3.
All my friends loved it and a lot of gaffers seemed to like it too. Mixed maybe but I haven't seen anything unanimous. If the publisher believed reviewers would score it 10/10, they'd send out review copies as early as possible, to start word of mouth to back the marketing campaign. If the publisher had reason to believe the game would review very badly, then they'd hold back review copies to get as many early sales as possible before word of mouth killed it. You don't hold back reviews if you're confident in your product.
Given the fallout from the nearly unanimously canned multiplayer beta, the over-priced and under-whelming season pass, and the utter lack of excitement that an hour long stream with the developers seems to have generated, I suspect Bethesda are thinking they have a stinker on their hands.
PCs equipped with BD drives are rather uncommon, especially with regard to custom systems (both user-built and store-built), which these days often don't have an optical drive at all. I myself have a BD drive but didn't bother installing it when I bought a new case ~16 months ago -- I figured I'd install it only when I actually needed it... and that day has yet to come.

Damn it, steam key is a lot cheaper but I love the reversible hard cover. Wat do

Which one ended up winning?
The point is it's a format designed for large capacity, unlike ageing DVDs, and if there's going to be a physical release pressing a Blu-Ray disc isn't going to add much to the cost yet provide an option to the consumer.

Hm that's a little better, it does seem hard to review it in total if a big part of the game is missing. Not sure why some are being told there will be no review copies. That's completely opposite of what I was told.
"As you know, DOOM is comprised of a single-player campaign, online multiplayer, and SnapMap. After discussing, we believe all three elements are important parts of the complete DOOM experience, and are meant to be experienced as part of a complete package. As DOOMs SnapMap and multiplayer modes both require access to a server that wont be live prior to launch, review copies will arrive on launch day. "
Haha well shame for him then. Guess he'll get a rude awakening. He can go play Alien Isolation instead?I have a buddy at work who is hoping this will be some kind of creepy atmospheric experience like Doom 3. I keep telling him it's closer to the original Doom games where it's all about gore, speed, and metal but he doesn't seem to get it. He's self proclaimed huge Doom fan, but hasn't played Doom 1 or 2 at all.
I was on the fence after the MP beta and some of the early footage, but I'm on board now. Can't wait!
Shane Satterfield said on his podcast that Beth said it had something to do with network functionality not being turned on for SnapMap.

I mean their "lame looking level editor" was Carmack's last contribution before he left. It's not unreasonable to think that they'd want it included in reviews. What a stupid excuse. They either think way too highly of their lame looking level editor or don't realize that other games get reviewed with parts of their online functionality missing all the time or are just bad liars. I choose option C.
They must've blown insane amounts of money on his title and its marketing, if the product were to reap high scores in their opinion that shit would be everywhere to further market it.
500k views on a trailer, damn.
There are a few clips on Live from Playstation and someone is streaming it on there right now. Seems to be late in the game though showing off some beautiful Mars vistas and other environment stuff but I won't spoil it. I did just hear the "You've returned.." dialog from the launch trailer. Dude playing isn't too good though. lol Keeps taking pot shots and running behind cover.
Looks like you get a results screen after each Mission completed too?
It's infuriating. There was a guy who literally stood still and fired his pistol at the wall for 2 minutes. And if it's the same guy I'm thinking of, he runs away from the demons for like 5 minutes before trying to take them down.
Coward. NO HONOUR.

It's $45 on GMG and it'll be like $30 on the steam saleThat's how Bethesda rolls these days. I'll be getting the retail version anyway, cause it's around $10 cheaper for me than the $60 Steam price. Pretty messed up that a physical version that costs a lot more to manufacture and distribute ends up costing less than just buying it directly online.

#notmydoom
He loved Alien Isolation, and he's played all the others like PT and Outlast, he's hoping for the same kind of experience. I told him he needs to watch some of the newer footage, but I doubt he will. Pretty sure in a couple weeks I'll be hearing about how it wasn't what he was expecting.
Wasn't doom 3 horror? This doesn't look like horror.
As someone who's only seen the Doom games from videos and hasn't actually played them, I don't think Doom should really be classified as a horror franchise. The whole point of the series is that you're a badass space marine who can singlehandedly take out swarms of the most vile demons of Hell with nothing but your bare hands and some guns. It's the ultimate power trip fantasy which goes against what most conventional horror is about which is taking power away from you.

It's like $32 on CDkeys I think but I dont know how legit they are
