EA has told Eurogamer it is in the process of eliminating Online Pass from all its existing titles.

"As we discontinue Online Pass for our new EA titles, we are also in the process of eliminating it from all our existing EA titles as well," a spokesperson said. "We heard the feedback from players and decided to do away with Online Pass altogether.

"Players will see it first with some EA Sports titles, where a prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear in-game; with other titles we are simply making Online Passes available free of charge online.

"These are rolling updates that are taking effect over the next several weeks. We hope players continue to enjoy our games and online services for a long time to come."

There's more in a new Online Pass FAQ.

What was the EA Online Pass?
Online Pass was a unique, one-time-use code included with new EA games that allowed EA players to access online features. If the game was not purchased new, the online pass code might have been used already and the player would need to purchase a new Online Pass.

Do I still need an Online Pass to play multiplayer games online?
For new EA titles, Online Pass will no longer be needed or included. Additionally, we are in the process of eliminating Online Pass requirements from existing EA games. This process will take several weeks. For some games, the prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear; for others, you will still need to download and install an Online Pass, but they will be available free of charge from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace or PlayStation Store.

When will specific games have their Online Pass turned off?
The latest releases of EA SPORTS games are the first. Over the next several weeks, Online Pass will either be removed completely, or will be available for free in the PlayStation Store and Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

Please note that our advisors will not be able to provide you an Online Pass code before that game's pass requirements are disabled. We appreciate your patience.

Why did we decide to do this?
We listened to the feedback from players, and decided to do away with Online Pass. We hope that eliminating Online Pass will allow more people to play and enjoy EA games for a long time to come.

Except for the ones that they've killed the online for.

Why not free on PSN!?!?!?

Good for them but this is kind of odd.

They should phase them out on all platforms that apply.

no upcoming DRM :)

I wonder, will EA be making anymore Xbox360 games? How I see it, it would be fine until the Xbox360 is official shut down. Until then, free online for future xbox360 titles.

No?

No PSN?

Dat Xbox unprecedented partnership.

Did somebody say UNPRECEDENTED partnership?

no upcoming DRM :)

Until we turn the servers off next week.

Quick question regarding the Cerberus Network DLC for Mass Effect 2. Since it would be free, does this mean that that the quests, items, etc. that require Cerberus Network would be free as well?

meh, checked & saw Medal of Honor PS2 HD port that came with Warfighter was not linked with the online pass. It was a pre-order bonus.

I do know Battlefield 1942 is linked to Bad Company 2's online pass, so if that's free, everyone can get BF 1942 free on XBLA.
