German etailer complains about low Xbox One supply, Sony delivers 450x more PS4s

you guys shouldn't focus so much on the "450 times" thing, which is definitely translated correctly btw. That's just because they received so few Xbones.

They said they had 3 digits Pre Orders for Xbone after 5 minutes, and they will get enough to serve those of the first 34 seconds. So they will have got like 10 Xbones and 4500 PS4.

The number for PS4s sounds high, but not unbelievable since Spielegrotte isn't to small.

That said, i don't think it's really a problem with the Xbone, but rather that they didn't bother about Spielegrotte.

I also wondered about the "we have received the same amount of preorders for both consoles", which is very surprising in Germany, but looking at the website, it seems to be more Xbox focused compared to other german stores, so that may be the reason.

My english isnt the best, but i tried to translate it

“No joking, we are getting just as many consoles, as for the preorders oft he first 35 seconds(no Joke!)….. Because we knew very early on the high demand on the console, we tried before Gamescom to get in Contact to Microsoft, there were 5 emails which definitely arrived, which didn’t get answered.

„We gave them (Sony) immediately our high Pre-order numbers, too. Our Priority was approved and we got very early commitments for high quantities. From Sony we are getting 450 times as many consoles as from Microsoft, although the pre order numbers were almost identical”

Silver line for xb1 and ms is that preorder number are same. That is a win in a Germany which has always been pro playstation

I'm not sure, but I doubt it. Who knows, though? I hope that CBoaT will grace us with his presence before the 22nd, though. If there really is an ass storm coming, I'd rather not be stuck with the consequences (should it turn out to be hardware issues or something).

All we know, is it was something that sounded more ass storming than the 720 vs 1080 CoD resolution. Given the amount of shit flying following that revelation, you've got to figure the Shelter Secret is something.... bigger? Yields can't be that bad, despite the odd rumour. Have to figure MS are focusing on their primary markets.

This is the whole mail. According to this, a little over half of them are not even Day One Editions.
Interesting.

Rough draft:
Dear customers who preordered XBones,

MS has finally told us the amount [they'll be sending to us], and why they waited so long with that number is becoming clear, because it's an insult and slap in the face of any XBone fan. Not kidding, we'll be getting just enough consoles to cover the first 35 seconds (no joke!) of preorders.

We're crestfallen, we're used to MS's ignorance and lack of cooperation, but this is taking things to a whole new level. You can find information on how to cancelations and orders at the end of this mail.

Just a quick explanation, since we're not a big concern we usually communicate with resalers/distributors from which we get our Microsoft stock. We were aware of the demand quite early on, so we tried to get into contact with MS before gamescom, amounting to 5 mails (which definitely got delivered) - but there was no answer or reaction from MS. It's a major embarassment for a worldwide enterprise like MS. We also tried reaching them through our resalers, who repeatedly handed their MS contacts our detailed preorder lists, as early as one week after sales started. MS knew at all times that we had three digits worth of preorders within the first five minutes alone. Apparently they weren't interested. If it's not Amazon, it's not worth their time.

We're extremely sorry, but like we said we've tried to establish contact even before gamescom began, and we didn't even get a rejection or refusal, but were simply ignored. It's preposterous that they gave us these tiny amounts (which are completely negligible considering the bigger picture) only three weeks before release. It's cowardice, and an embarassment.

Oh, but it doesn't stop there. Not only will we only be able to cover the first 35 seconds of preorders, no, more than half of the consoles won't be the Day One Editions...

We've tried everything and were left out in the rain with zero information. Sony proved that it doesn't have to be this way, we told them our considerable preorder numbers, we were acknowledged and they told us our amount early on. We'll be getting roughly 450 times as many consoles as from MS, despite preorder numbers being roughly the same.

We're baffled, and helpless. Our entire team will of course be relinquishing their own preorders and will wait for now, otherwise we wouldn't even be able to cover 35 seconds. We can't stress enough how sorry we are, and we understand anyone that gets angry, but please direct your hatred towards the culprits, namely MS. Maybe we can show MS just how many people are affected and that not everyone buys from megacompanies, I can only suggest you call MS support and complain, citing where you want to buy and when you preordered. I just know they'll try to deflect the blame and tell you that we lied to you, please have them give you the name of the customer rep so we can take action. Other specialist dealers are getting the same disastrous amounts/numbers from MS, which is why I'm urging my competitors and their customers to do the same, to show that these mega companies do not own the world. We've seen that MS needs to be reminded that their vision does not necessarily overlap with the rest of humanity, as seen with Always Online.

(the rest deals with how the customers will be able to cancel their orders and stuff...)

That shop is incredibly small and niche for the German market. Now Media Markt, Saturn, Amazon, and Gamestop are a different story...

May I have a cookie?
Thanks xHunter. Three things I want to highlight from the full mail:

- Xbox One preorders were in the three-digit range after the first five minutes

- more than half of the Xbox One consoles within the first 35 seconds after the console went up for sale were standard editions

- "every other specialist dealer receives the same disastrous numbers from Microsoft"

taking the bolded to mean ~100 preorders after five minutes, then together with being sold out after 35 seconds, this means they received roughly 12 Xbones, compared to roughly 5400 PS4s...

either this particular seller got the shaft from MS....or Germany is a Tier 3 country....i just cant imagine this being the case on any sort of widespread basis...no way...

450 times as many!?

Just for your information, Spielegrotte made a name on overpromising preorder numbers and underdelivering on launch day. So, I would take the comment with a grain of salt.

Well Spielegrotte is not really a large retailer but most people from the gaming community know them and I know alot of people who buy their games there.

So don't expect that there won't be Xbox Ones in germany I just think MS is focusing on big retailers and most of the Xbox One's are shifting to the US and UK

I find the claim of "identical preorder numbers" very hard to believe coming from a German retailer.

Spielegrotte.de started as an Xbox only website and the Xbox community is still huge there. Xbox games etc. always outsold the PS3 counterparts on this website because of the Xbox origins of the website.

I'm hoping for a low xbox one supply. I can't keep my preorder for the XB1 since I have a newborn daughter to look after now and I want to sell it for some diaper $

But my friend said that his local gamestop manager said that ps4 preorders were 10x that of the xbox. I call bullshit.

If you look at their 5 best selling products right now there are 4 Xbox games and 1 playstation game. Their costumers are likely in favour of MS. But yes I'm still surprised that they say that the preorders are about equal.
Usually germany is sony territory and the way it looks like now, things will stay that way

Here is how it works:

Sony and MS ship 90% of their contingent to the big wholesalers.
Independent shops can buy from there. But the whole salers will also sell to the big chains and don't actually care about the smaller shops.

So there is not much contingent left, that goes to independent shops. But there is that 10% they keep up as a reserverve for longtime strategic partners, marketing purposes and so on. Spielegrotte is a big online store. They had luck that the Sony guy knew them. If he didn't, they'd had received 5 consoles as the other indie stores.

The same thing could have happened the other way around.

If you look at their 5 best selling products right now there are 4 Xbox games and 1 playstation game.

Yes, Spielgrotte is known for the fact that a lot of 360 users bought there games there.

Spielegrotte is an independent game shop that is not relevant in the bigger picture. It's also notorious for accepting more pre-orders than they can actually deliver, I'm not sure why people still pre-order anything there.

This doesn't tell us anything about the amount of Xbox Ones available in Germany (or Europe) in general. It only shows that Microsoft will deliver most of the available units to the important retail chains: Saturn, Media Markt and Amazon.

Maybe the "about 450 times as many consoles" bit is an exaggeration and not supposed to be taken literally?

The reason Spielegrotte is so popular with Xbox fans is that you can have your order be packaged to look like a PlayStation delivery. That way your German neighbors will not think bad of you they see you get your delivery or even if they accept the delivery on your behalf.

Honor and shame are a big part in Germany.

The mail also says that their second shipment of XB1s will probably be just as small as their first one.

I am pretty surprised the XB1 preorders are as high as the PS4 ones but maybe it is because of the Xbox background of the site I didn't know of.
Many hardcore gamers buy at Spielegrotte because they don't stick to release dates and send out everything early.

Interesting.

Rough draft:

Thanks, this will be handy. Confirming the important parts was good but if anyone posted this elsewhere in the original form people would have attacked it for being a google translation, and we couldn't have just used the bits-and-pieces confirmations because people could say it was missing context.

3 digit range - so like 100 *450 -> ~ 45k units

WTF?!?

how big are they?!

They said that they got three digit numbers in the first 5 minutes but only enough units to supply the customers who ordered in the first 35 seconds.
So they are receiving a way lower allocation than 100 units. Therefore they aren't getting anywhere near 45k PS4s.

3 digit range after 5 minutes of preorders for the XB1 but he actually can only deliver consoles to preorders of the first 35 seconds. I guess he has a low double digits XB1 shipment tops, probably even <10 units.

Considering that, the math is more believable. 10 XB1 would convert to 4500 PS4, which would still be a lot.

.....near identical pre-order numbers in Germany of all places. Really? That seems off.

At this particular retailer which isn't representative of the whole market. I guess most gamers haven't even heard of that website.

Makes sense. MS Europe is low on units, they had to decide who to stiff, and they chose the mom & pop shops rather than big retailers or etailers.

I wouldn't read "large-scale shortage" unless this is confirmed by other regions or we hear from some bigger outfits.
