What pissed me off about it, even more than its fan-base on GAF which I can block out, is the fact that the thread title LED WITH "ATLUS", and thus preyed upon my hopes for the possibility of another genuinely good J game.

Instead, it only served to lower my estimation of Atlus a peg or six.

I don't buy games for their fanservice either, OP.

The only riscy series I have any interest in is Senran Kagura. I don't know what it is. Yes they are shallow and janky. Yes, they are not even 7/10 games.

But there is something...strangely fun about SK's extremely over the top and tongue in cheek-y attitude .

I don't touch that Nis and Idea Factory crap with a tenfoot pole though.
I think it helps that SK at least attempts to give character development and personalities, even if there's not a ton of depth. Also kind of helps it's sort of self-aware and is a bit more silly and isn't really in-your-face about it compared to others. Also, for the most part, you CAN skip the "fanservice". Hell, I pretty much just watch the transformations & damage cutscenes once, then just skip them because I want to get back to fighting and those scenes break the flow of battle. Plus I think it's more about choice. You're free to put the less skimpy outfits on the characters if you want, and again, skip those cutscenes if you don't wanna see them....also some of the girls actually are legal.

But yes, something about the NIS or IF games just are too....blantant about it. Doesn't help that when they do have to censor it, I completely understand the reasoning as to why and I tend to side with them, even if my opinion of censorship is a bit more complex, but I don't want this to turn into another all-out censorship opinion war like other titles that got censored for the US. I don't mind lewd, but PLEASE make them at least LOOK legal. Seeing one of the pics via DT2, I was simply "NOOOPPPEEEE" and was fully on Atlus' side on censoring.

I kind of get where the OP is coming for. When I was in high school, at the potential peak of puberty, I would look forward to this stuff, but now, I'm starting to realize it's time to move on, especially since I'm gonna give dating another chance. Guess it's sort of like how some guys realize it's time to move on from the bachelor life.

This is actually one of my fears and I feel it manifesting first in my interest in anime and manga. I used to consume everything under the umbrella, especially the ecchi stuff. As the years have gone by, I now have leaned towards stories with older characters, preferably college or older. I've caught myself thinking on more than one occasion "man this could be so much more if the characters were older".

I'm scared.
I kind of get what you're saying. As we get older, we want to be able to watch/read things involving characters closer to our age in order to relate to them better.

Part of the problem is that (from what I understand) in Japan, high school is seen as the biggest "turning point" in someone's life where as in the US, it's more college.

The funny thing is, there have been stuff that's about college-aged characters and still be good. Golden Time, by the creators of Toradora, was rather enjoyable. Maybe it's just harder to find, but a shame there isn't more out there.

This stuff never appealed to me but more and more I find myself outright ignoring or dismissing posts from people with 8 year old anime girl and/or gigantic anime tits avatars.

I have never bought a game for the fan service. I've bought games that are rife with fan service because I heard the gameplay is enjoyable. I really love the Senran Kagura games because they are fun. If anything threads like this make me want to purchase the unmentionable games just to see what the big deal was.

I don't understand why people can't enjoy the games they want to enjoy and let others enjoy what they enjoy. If you want to Play an eroge like Hunipop go ahead, if you want to rape and murder women in GTA who am I to stop you. There is a rating board in the games industry for a reason.

I didnt make this thread to name and shame people

I just felt like we should expect more for our hard-earned money and valuable time and to tell Atlus USA "You can't see me"
Using the Atlus announcement as the reason to make this thread is a bit strange, since the game is apparently a very good DRPG.

Yes, I totally agree with OP. I'm all for sexy in video games. Fanservice is OK in my book when done right (Senran Kagura is acceptable to me, for example, because it's clearly over the top). I'm huge anime enthusiast. Hell, my major is Japanese studies. But stuff like "Uuu~, Protagonist-kun, I'm so sorry I landed my panties on your face, gomenasai!", "I look and act like 10 years old girl, but I'm also an 1000 years old goddess lol", "*anime moans* *questionable CG*" and so on is borderline offensive and needs to stop. This is stupid. This is not funny. I feel like I'm losing my IQ points just by looking at screenshots. It's so sad that once glorious Japanese game industry can survive only by shameless pandering. And it's even more sad that beautiful Stranger in Sword City doesn't leave its homeland, while we're getting, like, 5th Neptunia game in the time span of two years. Oh, and guess what? Stranger in Sword City actually seems like a good game.

Some games just go too far .

I wanted to check out some gameplay of Hyperdimension Neptunia U on vita the other day(I never played any of those games) I watched about 1 mins then for some reason the main character who looked like a young girl start getting her clothes ripped off ....

Nope sorry that's just ridiculous and that's not for me .
I don't mind anime games and moe stuff but when it become ridiculous like this, no thanks .

The idea of "supporting a publisher" and buying bad games just because they come from said publisher is kind of silly.
If anything it just promotes more of the same junk, rather than innovation and new experiences.

Having sexual content in the games is kind of irrelevant.

If the tone is so fundamentally off-putting that it would interfere with the possibility of enjoying the game-play, then it isn't a very good DRPG, now is it?

OP is specifically talking about "shallow" titles which ony exist for "cheap thrills". If you can't stand or can't look past the lewd content, you can feel free to ignore it, but that doesn't make games automatically crap or revokes their reason to exist.

I'm tired of shooting guys in the head or seeing MKX fatalities, yet you don't see me demanding people to boycott these games.

Then just don't play them and let other people enjoy that stuff. It's obviously selling, otherwise they wouldn't release it.

This is basically just another "I don't like thing" Thread.

Ok, so I was curious to see why that game was banned, because I don't know really what these games are about other than fanservice. Saw that post linking pics, saw the second one and was like NOOOOOOOPE *close tab*!

No wonder it was banned.

I did the exact same thing.

Like I said, the "reason" is not lost on me. I just feel like if games of a sexual nature are banned from discussion, we should just ban all games past and future to make sure.

I hope you're trolling, but if you actually want discussion about all games with sexual content (with adult characters) banned then that's stupid. I could understand your position if you want all violent games discussion to be banned too but otherwise - wtf!

Just saying, but I think it's pretty fucked up to support a game with this stuff in it just because you enjoy the gameplay/combat/whatever.

The problem I had with Golden Time (aside from sharing its name with an amazing K-drama) is the art style. Characters looked to generic and still young; I wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you put them up against Highschool DxD. For a long time, I've yearned or something like NANA and Honey & Clover.

Guess anime games with those kind of visuals wouldn't sell outside of otome ones.

If you have to put [borderline] pedophilia into your game, then its worth is categorically less than a shallow grave.

Yeah, the one that looked like an actual blowjob (I had to do a double take to see what it was that was being..err...sucked) was already proof enough this was rather risque and I was siding with Atlus, but then "NOOOOOOPPPPPEEEEEE CLOSE CLOSE CLOSE" at that one pic. That is exactly the type of stuff I stay away from and never want to touch.

You wanna make flat-chested girls? Fine, each guy has their own preference in size/proportions, but PLEASE MAKE THEM LOOK LEGAL.

Wasn't there a token little-girl-looking character in Senran Kagura...?

If you're buying games you know you won't like to "support a publisher," you're making a bad decision. If not being able to discuss the game here helps you not make this bad decision, that's probably a net good.

I've never understood people buying games they're not into just to support the developer. If you buy a game you're not interested in you're encouraging the developer to make more of that specific game. Don't buy games unless you want to see more of that specific game.

As for the topic at hand, I'm not too bothered by moderate fan service in otherwise good games, but I buy games in spite of them having it, not because of them having it. I find it quite disappointing that games that aren't very good (or even straight up bad) but have a lot of fanservice are selling so well.

EO is good tho. No contradiction!

Some of the EO portraits are close to toeing the line, though.

As a non-hypocritical fan of their game-play, I'd be remiss not to cede this.

I do not use those portraits.

If EO did not give me other portrait options, I'd not play the games.

I'm not a big fan about "lewd-games" most of the time because they usually aren't that great gameplay wise, but if a game is good I don't really mind the fanservice at all.

Basically, I'll play a game if it's fun.

Why not call it pedoservice because thats what it is

Fanservice sounds like they included some fan favourites from other games

Agreed. This is pretty much me right now. Didn't watch a single ecchi harem from last season of animes even though I used to watch everything. The story part of such animes has gone to the gutter recently. Highschool DxD was the last straw for me probably.

Same for games actually.

Honestly yeah, this is the same boat I'm in. I love the EO games, but some of the portrait options skeeve me the fuck out, and if I had to look at them as a significant part of the gameplay I'd probably stope playing

No, I'm saying that supporting a game with underaged sexual content because you can "ignore it" is fucked up.

I guess? I guess I'm fucked up, then. If the game is fun to play, it can look however it wants. I actually find some of the over-sexualization amusing. I laugh about it because it's so ridiculous.

I absolutely agree. I've put up with games like this for a little while hoping the fad would pass, but it hasn't. I miss JRPGs I didn't have to be ashamed to play. I miss gorgeous, unique artstyles in my games as opposed to this UBER MOE bull. I just don't get it.

Trying to understand how Dungeon Travelers, Monster Monpiece, and Criminal Girls all got deleted, but we have quite a large thread about Hunie Pop. Now, the difference between these games doesn't escape me, I just feel if the mods are going to censor those games, then in effect all games of an adult nature such as that should be banned in the future, and that includes otome games/visual novels (IMO).

I believe Criminal Girls was banned because if the gameplay and premise being offensive to some.

When I saw this thread and became aware DT2 is banned I wondered the same thing with Hunie Pop having that huge thread.

I remember playing FFIX for the first time recently and thinking what a fresh of breath air it was playing a game that wasn't solely meant for a modern Japanese animu audience a la FF13. I really hope the "moe" fad in Japan is toned down for the future. Their videogame industry possess an immense amount of talent and passion. Yet so much is thrown away because of cheap fan service. There's nothing wrong with making sexy characters. But atleast do it with taste and maturity.

But hey, one can say that the same applies to western games but in the form of violence instead.

Fan service almost always detracts from a game for me. I see no point, and I don't enjoy it. A game featuring sexual content dealing with minors is disgusting and I'm glad they're banned on gaf.

This long standing trend of Moe, sexual, fan service garbage really has hurt the gaming and anime industry. Hoping to see this trend change someday.

Like I said, fanservice type games where the girls look of questionable age is understandable, but at the same time with games like Hunie Pop that are pretty much porn games, I feel there should broad discourse for all games and cut out the middleman.

Congrats. Now you know why the PSP2 has failed: The market for it is flooded with nothing but these titles, it feels like. :/

As it is, it's a shame Atlus has stooped to Xseed's level to gain some quick profit off perverts. :/

hey don't you talk bad about my Vita like that

I love the thing but yea it isn't enjoyable seeing all these fucking weird porn games on my handheld of choice

I'm really questioning myself for purchasing future games in the Kiseki series after Sen no Kiseki. I definitely want a lengthy multi-arc story JRPG, but why am I allowing myself to play games with such deliberate attempts at pandering to such a sick crowd?

Don't buy just because it is lewd, buy because it is good AND lewd.

I thought the characters looked a bit older than usual. Certainly older than say in Toradora. They are still only 18-21.

Death Parade might be something you'd want to check out. Main characters are adults. Then again it's Madhouse, you can always count on them to have a more interesting premise than high school and boobs. :)

Buying games to support publishers is just silly, I think. I may buy a game to prod the publisher to release the sequel (like when I bought Trails in the Sky on steam, day one) but the game in question must be good.

I'd admit, I probably became more accepting and open minded to these lewd games as I got older. I try not to judge the game by its fan service. If the game is good, it's good. But I've always knew where to draw the line. I've looked over those Dungeon travellers screenshots, that second one is...well crossed that line a long time ago.
