Great new Mario Odyssey commercial

I know Splatoon 2 is kinda iterative and doesn't have the epic open world punch of these two. . .

But I really love it enough that it being in the same year as these two just feels like icing on the cake.

Nintendo knocked it out of the park this year.

And Xenoblade 2 hasn't released yet ;)

Loved it, great video. Now, please NoA, just use cuts from this to air on TV, you don't need to make your own boring ad as usual.

NoE and NoJ Mario Odyssey Commercials: HOLY SHIT YOU CAN BE ANYTHING YOU CAN BE A TREX AND A HUMAN AND FUUUUUUCCKK

NoA Mario Odyssey Commercials: You can control things, I guess. Not really much different to just having more power ups but it looks somewhat cool. Buy it if you want, I don't really care.

Has anyone else noticed that the worse the world gets, the more incredible Nintendo becomes? It's quite the odd(yssey) correlation, but games as joyous as this are just the escape we all need.

Can't even fathom how freaking glorious this will be.

This is so odd and so great at the same time.

I'm shocked Nintendo actually referenced K. Rool. That's amazing.

Now here's hoping Retro's game is DK and K. Rool is back

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Trailer is freaking amazing. Mario Odyssey + Wolfenstein 2 + Assassins Creed Origins all on the same day is going to be legendary.

The early 1990s were some of the worst times in 100+ years?

So - no, I don't notice your proposed "correlation."

Seven out of the past seven months have been awful in the real world, seven out of the past seven months have been amazing in Nintendo land.

Coincidence? Nay, that's just math baby! Can't argue with the numbers, unless you want to be chomped up by a big ol' Mario Rex.

They didn't make this commercial for GAF. They made this to show people who may not even know what the Switch is.

What I mean is, GAF is raving over how amazing this commercial is. I'm not getting the sense that it's in a "This is a great commercial to show to other people who aren't as interested in games," but rather that people here think it's a great commercial for themselves.

Ah, I see.
7 months of data.

Man, that's so weak in comparison.

But good lord, does anyone remember this trailer for 3D World in the UK? Those faces in the beginning, my god.

Nintendo felt so hopeless during that era.

Is it me or Nintendo seems to be more invested in ads/commercials compared to the Wii U era?

Changing their marketing partners for the Switch was the best decision outside of their games they made in ages. Every bit of marketing, every ad for the Wii U was abysmal. Whoever they hired did a grat job since the Switch reveal trailer. Granted they have a more compelling product to work with but christ that Wii U stuff was just awful.

Pretty sure Nintendo hasn't change anything. Golin is their PR Firm and has been. In fact Nintendo has influenced Golin a ton as far as restructuring the company etc since 2012.

In June 2011, the firm divided most of its 700 employees into four specialist categories: strategist (insights and analytics), catalyst (account management and execution), connector (media and social engagement) and creator (content development).
It was a big change from the typical sorts of layers you see within a PR agency of scale. The intention of the reorganization, based largely on the firm's Nintendo account structure, was to better identify and cultivate digital and creative talent, while more accurately aligning paid-, owned- and earned-media capabilities, the firm noted at the time.

Nintendo has its ups and down just as much as its consoles do. Wii U was from the get go underwhelming and frankly Nintendo treated it just as so. Wii had fantastic ads and it was a fantastic device that could easily show why it was awesome.

Switch is the same way. It has a great concept that works and its easy to show why its great.

Someone help me. I'm very tempted to get a Switch just for this game. I don't know if I should save for more games or just go buy the switch and this game. Gah decisions.

Edit: I also really like the commerical. I can't help but smile.

Why not? I got a Switch just for Xenoblade. Well this game too really. If you don't mind used, watch Amazon like a hawk, got mine for $239. You can always sell for about what you paid after you get your fill, there is plenty of Switch thirst. I've owned so many consoles in the last 5 years from trading up I couldn't even guess how many.

Honestly, I never liked Mario as a character, design wise, but damn, it's sooo iconic, it's really the face of videogames. Great commercial, I got a stupid smile all the video, this game is pure joy, makes me feel like a child again and that's why I love Nintendo.

Nice. Feels weirdly triumphant - but I guess that just shows how much the song has grown on me. Well, that, and that I'm glad the game is almost here.

This game has co-op? I wasn't aware. One person controls the hat?

Also, some of these comments. So it's not okay that you like it, everyone else has to like it or they are just being edgy or cynical?

Time to be pointlessly looking for details.

We all know New Donk City has homages/references to DK, and many of its areas are named after DK characters.

But why is an avenue named after Rool? Was a he a former corrupt mayor who made shady laws that prevented the avenue to be renamed?

I'm confused with what you're saying. Are you saying it's out of place K.Rool has a street name since he didn't exist prior to DKC?

You know, as nice as this commercial is I can't help but feel like it's a bit unbalanced. Much of the gameplay footage is at the very end of the commercial, and the small bits of gameplay footage that is present in the first half of it are mostly unexciting looking parts of New Donk City. The Capture ability isn't really shown in game until a minute and 20 seconds in, with the CGI capture of the real people/dog kind of ambiguously hinting at it but not showing it as a critical aspect of the game.

I think the E3 trailer and Euro/Japanese commercials do a better job at showing what makes this game different from past entries as well as showing how varied it is. I wonder what the TV cut US version will be like.

I think the street name just suggests that outside of the highly hierarchical Mushroom Kingdom and DK Isles, King K. Rool's actions are seen more positively throughout the Mushroom World.

Perhaps he is like a revolutionary hero to some. Maybe for the residents of New Donk City, K. Rool didn't "steal" the bananas as DK and friends want everyone to think. In New Donk City, perhaps K. Rool is perceived to have heroically redistributed the food hoarded by the 1% of DK Isles to the rest of the animals, from the beavers to the wasps and even to the beavers in spinning stone wheels. Maybe they sympathize with K. Rool and the Kremlings after the Kongs blew up their home. The street name could be in honor of his revolutionary actions against the powerful, well-connected, dynastic Kong family.

Obviously these ideas are not popular in DK Isles or the Mushroom Kingdom since both are ruled without much say from the populace. The regimes from these countries wouldn't be happy with this kind of thinking spreading.

Mayor Pauline might definitely endorse this point of view, especially since she might understand the Kongs' less savory characteristics first hand. Unfortunately, I'm sure her hands are tied to some extent. The powerful Kong family and their Toadstool allies probably used their influence to name the other parts of town after regime-friendly figures like Rattly the snake.

I hope there's an actual musical level in the game where this song plays.

Or even better, I want this to be the entire end credits sequence. Just have Mario and everybody dancing it off in New Donk City to this tune!
