Just Cause 3 - early impressions thread

Took a plane and flew over the entire map.

From what I can gather there are only two "biomes"; mediterranian forest and snow. Also, there are zero interesting landmarks. No big cities [or any city/urban area], no insane buildings like the Waterfall Casino or the three-tower hotel, no Mile High Club.

Nothing. There's one island that had something pretty neat, but other than that I have to say I'm a little disappointed.

Apparently you missed the massive city in region 3?

What are you doing on Boom Island? I went there and it seemed kinda empty.

Just killing time while the game installed.

Haven't encountered any issues yet.

But it's fun jumping of a car straight into a wing suit.

The games AA solution is akin to that of Halo Reach but not as bad.

I imagine that's gonna piss a few people off but I'm cool with it.

Game could use some post launch polish for sure though.

Oh, I didn't play during install. I can see it being a fun time waster for that, I went when exploring the overall map and was really confused about it.

This is why I won't buy this even though you can get it for just over £15 right not.
The story seems pretty much abscent and the actual shooting and general gameplay mechanics are half-assed.
The game gives me the impression it's a quick and easy low-budget cash-grab.

Is it the island in the top south-west corner shaped like a horse shoe?

I just went there, it was a 15-kilometer flight and took forever to get there. Totally expected something cool like the Lost island from Just Cause 2 but it was fucking nothing, haha. Literally.

Yeah that one haha, I did the exact same thing.

I really want to get this game for PS4 but damn does it look like it's pretty rough :( Loving the Giant Bomb Quick Look, but obviously my experience is gonna be pretty different given they're playing on PC.

i've spent some time with it as well and my quick thoughts are pretty similar to OP's with some exepctions (fe. i dont dislike vehicle driving this much)

I would add also this

- Controls are total clusterfuck in closed spaces. When you are gliding, parachuting and ziping in open areas it works great, but in towns... Combined with bad camera work it leads to lot of frustration some times
- Liberating towns/bases is sometimes crazy hard (great!)
- Oh boi, all enemies are crazy marksmans - no matter what they are wielding, they will fkin hit you badly. Pretty weird to be honest and since there is no cover system it sometimes feels like "cheating" on AI part
- Wingsuit is so much fun!
- Online stats are annoying as hell. When you lose connection to the server for a second it stops the game, trying to reconnect etc. I had TURN OFF my internet connection completely to get rid of it.
- Voice acting and plot... it has to be said one more time - it's a trash man. I really wish they haven't implement cutscenes at all, my ears were bleeding every single time...
- We finally have decent checkpoint system during missions so you don't have to start from the beginning if you fail

play this shit for the past 45 minutes. Apart from the shitty server shit it looks amazing

Overall the game is fun, but it lacks polish and this "X factor" to make it anyhow worth remembering after couple of hours.

Thanks for the impressions.

So, what exact fake nationality is Rico Rodriguez suppose to be anyway?

Wish he was just straight up spanish :/

Yeah there's a lot of unnecessary loading between cutscenes and in between missions, especially when the camera as a cutscene ends pans in a way that suggests a seamless transition into gameplay.

He's from Medici, the country Just Cause 3 takes place in. Similar to Panau it's a fictional country.

Geographically I guess it's a blend between Spain, Italy, Greece. The language sounds like a mesh between Spanish and Italian, hence why Rico sounds like Ezio.

The voice acting being all over the joint is only accented by the fact they have David tennant in a bit part. They hired Doctor Who! Kilgrave! Casa-fucking-nova and he's just there to give you a quick piece of comedy when you liberate somewhere.

These early impressions make it sounds like it needs to get into Mad Max price range before I'm interested (less than $20).... Was pretty hyped about the game because I thought they'd fix all of JC2 flaws but it doesn't sound that way.

These negative impressions are surprising, I thought this would be a lock for GoTY material.

Guess I'll check if I can cancel my PSN pre-order

I never thought of it as GOTY material. It seems to really lack in narrative direction and is a literal sandbox for you to do as you please. For me that sounds good on paper, but in practice I can't help but feel like it would get old quick.

And they completely lost a sale with this. No way I'm paying them money if this is the case. Fix it or I'm not buying it. So sick of this online garbage in single player games. I'm not going to go out of my way to shut off my internet connection just so I don't have to deal with this kind of thing that should never happen in the first place.

This bad news (along with asinine load times) really sucks. I was looking forward to this.

I find the no cover complaint weird. This isn't a tps cover shooter, you're meant to zip around and area to blow shit up

One question, do the cars tumble when you roll them down a hill? One of JC2's best features was that the cars would actually flip end over end when you crashed them off of cliffs.

I don't have any impressions to offer but to my knowledge, the biggest breach of street date was for LittleBigPlanet PS Vita, which inexplicably was put up for sale at GameStop and other retailers 2 weeks before its scheduled release date.

Bahaha. Holy crap really? Thats insane.

It's not for everyone, but the last Just Cause game came out 5 years ago... it's not a cash grab. It's been in development for years now but Avalanche doesn't have unlimited resources and even they admit the story isn't the focus so they invested more in improving the parts people appreciated most in past Just Cause games.

Bahaha. Holy crap really? Thats insane.

I was a bit off now that I've looked it up - the release date was 20th September 2012 and GameStop started selling it around September 12th for seemingly no reason.

Are you going to be doing a review of this game, by the way? I really enjoyed your Rise of the Tomb Raider review.

Yes. My first time doing that Sprint challenge I didn't land the huge jump and fell down the cliff. The car flipped and flipped, rolled and rolled on its journey down the cliff until landing in water.

Progression being tied to the type of bland, repetitive gameplay challenges I always try to avoid really turned me off to buying this at full price. It also doesn't look like much thought was put into the mission design(again), which is a shame because the sandbox here seems primed for some crazy over the top scenarios. The physics and destruction systems look especially fun so I definitely still plan to give it a go at some point.

I dunno, the missions I've seen so far all seem like things I would've wanted to try out anyway.

Finished the game a few days ago and for what it's worth I really, really enjoyed it. Nothing mindblowing but if you liked JC2 and you want more of that, this is it.
This is the B-Team of Avalanche working on this right? The original JC 2 team worked on Mad Max (which I loved)? I thought I read that somewhere.
I'd say this "B-Team" outdid the "A-Team" this year. This game is far more enjoyable than Mad Max (well to me at least).

Despite this online shit I'm really loving it. There where far more disappointing games this year than this.

I think it delivers well for just cause fans, but I think jc2 was a little bit more polished than jc3 (right now)

Also did you know that the german let's player gronkh did some voice acting in it? Pretty hilarious hearing him trying to be serious.

If there was any game that needed some sorta coop or 4 player mode it's this one. Think I'll hold out until the modders get cracking or the dev team comes up with something.

This, I would be in day one if they had co-op, wrecking mayhem with somebody else would be amazing.

Rico is Mexican (though he grew up in Medici) That's why his accent sounds spanish, while the natives from Medici sound italian-ish.

How long did it take you to beat? Debating trying to Redbox it!

What version of the game did you play? Were the loading times as bad as that example from the other thread?
PS4, it does have some long loading times but not as bad. Here's my post from that thread:
A bit LTTP lol but here it is (PS4, patched):

Initial loading and logging in: ~2:10 minutes.
First death (just crashing a plane) loading: 46 seconds.
Second death loading after making some chaos: 35 seconds.
Third death loading after making even bigger chaos: 26 seconds.
Fast traveling to a close location loading: 31 seconds.
Fast traveling to a far location: 46 seconds.

Whatever this guy ran into, I couldn't replicate it.

Yes, this is a game that needs to be enjoyed with friends, still can't believe they didn't include it. Wing-suiting around the world with 3 of your friends? Yes please.

Kind of a different philosophy with the games though. Max can be pretty slow when you're just rummaging around for scrap and this looks balls to the wall. There's room for both in ones taste lol. I haven't played this obviously but I thought Max was great and this looks great too. That's great you liked it though.

Excellent, thanks for letting me know. I spent hours in JC2 driving cars down steep hills.
