Definitely a good idea to call the cops and have it on record, but don't expect them to run fingerprints or anything. You might want to consider installing a camera above your door.

Report it to the police now and start getting a record. Sadly because of the shootings people are looking for anything to point their anger at, and the fact that the shooter was a Muslim sadly gives them an easy way out.

I think that is a smart approach.
in the security world, preventative (lights on, locks) and detective (monitoring, alarm system) controls are usually the best way to go in these cases. Most people don't want to get caught, so they bolt at the first sign of trouble.
Guns are a corrective control, if you are curious. Those are usually the worst kinds of security controls because it implies your preventative and detective controls weren't sufficient.

I'm a police officer and you should call the police. Just understand something very important things:
1. There's nothing they're going to be able to do.
2. They probably won't do a report, but there will be a record of the call logged and the reason for your call.
3. There has not been a crime committed here. That isn't considered harassment or a threat.
4. They will not pull fingerprints off of the paper. They will not waste their time doing that for something that isn't a crime to begin with.
While I understand that it's concerning because you don't know how far it can escalate, you're best bet is to get a camera for your front door if you can afford it.

Because they generally have a lot of other things going on. I remember when my sister had her phone and purse stolen from her at gunpoint the police basically said they were too swamped with more important things to track it down.

This is what I was afraid of. People are ignorant, and this is going to keep happening because people can't separate the actions of one madman from the regular adherents of a religion. It's especially frustrating, because yesterdays tragedy happened just days after one of the most positive exposures of Islam we've seen in this country in years (Muhammad Ali's Funeral).
