Near-sighted means you see well up close, right, but poorly far away? If so, shouldn't using a VR headset be fine without glasses? The screens aren't far away from your eyes.

Depends on your prescription, I'm near sighted and I can use VR without glasses pretty well, it was pretty amazing the first time I used the pass through on the Gear VR (uses the front camera to show you a video feed) and I could actually see (albeit in a crappy low resolution) long distances.

Sure but my minimum expection is that of presence. That's the absolute minimum for a VR system. If it can't do that then I think it's a failure and it's just 3D with 360 view which is what I felt with the cardboard. No feeling of immersion or being there and that's what left me disappointed.

Cardboard and indeed Gear VR don't feature positional tracking at all compared to Oculus, PSVR etc and positional tracking plays a huge part in eliciting presence. The minute you move your head slightly forward or to the side and the view doesn't follow you it is an immersion breaker for sure. (From all I've read anyways! :p)

The screens are far away as far as your eyes are concerned, that's one effect of the lenses in the headset.

That was a very interesting read in the OP.

Good bump.

The post quoted in the OP is pretty bad though. Of course it's going to be hard running things well on a perfect VR rig, but that's easily fixable with more hardware power (which we KNOW will come). He talks about HL2VR as if it's super taxing, but I can run it on my laptop at 75FPS with all effects on with my DK2 no problem. On my old ass desktop I can even render it out on an external monitor through OBS at the same time! I have no idea why he says that.

The rest is just "I don't think this" or "I don't believe that". He's basically talking down VR even though he knows we're still at Day 0 - something he acknowledges with his talk about upcoming eye tracking being better.
