Magic Duels |OT| Magic The Hearthstonening [Update Support Ending]

What's funny is that I left MtG for HS, and I'm so heavily invested now that I'm never going back. Sucks for WotC. Too little, way too late.

This exactly. WotC just doesn't seem to be interested in what the players want. I can't fathom why they wouldn't update MTGO and make it a little more user friendly and less of an eyesore.

I might check this out, but I'm pretty content with HS.

it feels wrong to buy packs in any tcg now without playing some kind of limited with them. magic draft and hs arena has me trained.

Yeah, even if it was draft or sealed vs ai, to not cannibalize paper Magic/MTGO, it'd still be enough for me. They made a step towards it with sealed in 2014 (I think?), and I assumed this free-to-play model would have that idea expanded upon somehow (when you've unlocked all of the cards there's still a reason to buy packs w/ draft and sealed).

Seems like the game is coming in as another missed opportunity from Wizards of the Coast?

Give me that Steam version, Wizards!

This is exactly what I want. Hearthstone's awesome business model merged with a deeper and more varied card game.

Looking over the cards... Blue lacks its classic Cancel card or any of its variants? Either I missed something or that's a curious omission.

Could be fun to try this game out when it comes on Steam, scratch that old Magic itch from home.

This is the "final yearly update we promise" edition of Duels, right? They'll be updating just this one and not releasing another "client" next year?

Magic Online has a bunch of issues, because it has to retain full compatibility with thousands and thousands of existing cards, none of which were designed with considerations for how difficult they would be to program. There's also a link with the physical product from being able to exchange full digital sets to full physical sets, which none of the digital-only games has to deal with.

Wizards has cocked a lot up over the years, but they are also in an extraordinarily more complicated situation than Blizzard will ever have to deal with.

My friend who recently got me into Magic has told me about numerous deals that Wizards has had to cut with game stores concerning MTG:O.

They can't just transition the full Magic cardbase over to a free-to-play electronic system without pissing a lot of people off. That's why they're kicking off a new system with Origins.

I'll be giving this a shot when the Steam version releases, but lack of global account is such a bad decision. Going to be really hard to compete for my time with Hearthstone.

Wth? No fanfare or anything?

I'd love to play a Magic game that is functional and accessible like Hearthstone

UI sucked so hard in the older games.

This looks better, but still nowhere near as good as Hearthstone's interface

Magic is a much more complex game with a lot more different kinds of cards on the playing field. It's inevitable that it's going to be more messy looking than Hearthstone. As for the game, I'm skeptical that they have the wherewithal to pull off a good free to play version of the older Duels games. Duels 2015 was full of awful ideas, and I'm not convinced that they've figured out what they did wrong. However, it'd be great if they do manage to make a good game. Magic is fundamentally a much more interesting game than Hearthstone, and I'd love to play a good online version without breaking the bank.

The lands to the side is going to bug the everloving shit out of me.
That's because it's showing a four-player game. Two-player games should be a lot more streamlined.

Hearthstone has significantly less going on. It has a maximum of 7 cards on one side of the field at a time, has no visual representation of a graveyard, and no phases of a turn. The quoted image is also of a 4 player game

This trailer shows the lands centered, so I imagine that's how it'll be for non-mobile at least.

EDIT: The trailer also shows 2v2 with centered lands.

Really exited to play this on PS4 when it lands in august according to some new articles.

Would play this now, but it doesn't work on Ipad 4 because they apparently couldn't be bothered to code the game for anything running on 32-bit.

A F2P game without cross platform saves or gameplay? That seems like an incredibly dumb decision.

Yeah, I don't like this. I'm going to nab it on my iPad since that's probably where I'll use it most. But that's really disappointing. How do you not match core features of the market leader in this space?

Yeah, but Hearthstone can't touch the complexity of gameplay that MTG offers. Played for a bit on a iPhone 6 and it seems to work well on that small format. A little annoying to be forced to play through tutorials though, even if they are well done.

MTG with a larger cardset, yes that statement is very accurate. Not so much with what is available in the current product here. A big part of complexity in TCGs is the way that cards in the card pool interact with each other, the more cards you have, the deeper the interactions and the more possibilites. As Magic Duels: Origins progresses it will get more complex, but it's really not more complex than Hearthstone is right now.

wow this actually sounds great for MTG.

however, I gotta say... one of the biggest disappointments this gen is lack of extensive cross-play. I feel like only one game per gen has it. It should be fucking standard, without question.

edit: ok wow, even worse, is that you don't even have an account to share over platforms? who made that decision? being able to play on steam then take it mobile with the same cards/progression seems like a no brainer. :(, hopefully it's something they can patch.

OP, where do you see a release for Android? Everything I look at says no Android release, which is bullshit since it runs on iOS. I have a big screen (Note 4), let me use it for Magic!
Magic 2015 sucked.

Hopefully they can add it in the future given that they probably won't be launching a new game every year from now on.

Especially in the case of a turn based game. I mean I don't expect every F2P MMO or shooter to work across platforms but a card game? Seems to be some really nearsighted people working for this company.

I was big into MTG, played in worlds, pro tours and travelled the world. I quit because of how they managed the game and organised play.

I have no interest in playing 'this'. Which I find sad as I still love the game and this has promise but is done so half-assed and poorly.

I'm seeing mixed reports of an android version existing. I don't think there is going to be an android release, unless you found something I haven't.

Good point, I'm hoping they will continue to add cards and eventually drafts too.

The fact that the mobile and pc version are not cross-compatible is mind-boggling. This product is doomed unless they can figure that out.

No android?

No cross platform play?

Meh

Id try it if it was out for Android, since getting hooked on HS id give this a try.

I'll give it a shot. I have well over a hundred hours in Hearthstone but I'm getting a little annoyed by the "random" properties they keep introducing on cards. As if TCGs aren't random enough already.

I like how when searching the app store for 'magic duels' it's the 6th thing down in the list. even when it's the exact name. dat search engine tho.

yeah, exactly. I feel like at this point either WOTC is just dumb or they realize all the obvious features they keep leaving out so they can sell another game later on that has a slight improvement.

I just don't see any good reason why they dont have it as a cross platform game that's DLC focused and patch-updated, like an MMO. instead of continuing to release stand alone titles that all miss stuff the community has asked for for ages. I guess it's too much to ask. This seems like a great step in the right direction, it's just missing things that could make it god-tier.

edit: guess it's not compatible with iphone 5.. ? god dammit.

Thanks for the info. I know MtG is more complex, but I was really turned off by the slow UI and turn phases in the older games.

Im eager to play it, but it's really surprising to me that Magic hasnt made a big presence with a video game

That has to do with the pricing structure. The big issue is their refusal to invest in building a client that's actually functional.

Have they actually said there is no cross platform accounts? I mean it's currently only available on one platform so it's not like anyone has tested this.
