Marc Laidlaw reveals Half-Life 2 Episode 3's story synopsis

"And here we are. I spoke of my return to this shore. It has been a circuitous path to lands I once knew, and surprising to see how much the terrain has changed. Enough time has passed that few remember me, or what I was saying when last I spoke, or what precisely we hoped to accomplish. At this point, the resistance will have failed or succeeded, no thanks to me. Old friends have been silenced, or fallen by the wayside. I no longer know or recognize most members of the research team, though I believe the spirit of rebellion still persists. I expect you know better than I the appropriate course of action, and I leave you to it. Except no further correspondence from me regarding these matters; this is my final epistle."

Does this sound like Laidlaw talking about his experience at Valve to anyone else?

I'd be lying if I said I weren't upset about this, all these years Valve just lied.
Kind of insane to think, sounds so good too.

So wait a minute.

This means that all this time, all the leaked stuff, concept art, etc.. it really was ep 3 that was still on track to come out, and not hl3.

So HL3 has never actually existed.

Damn, not even Yu Suzuki would post a summary of Shenmue's remaining chapters. He held out for fourteen years until he could make the next one and do the story right.

Half-Life 3 is dead.

Since no one wants Naughty Dog to do it, I'd be fine with Machine Games (Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus) finishing up Half Life.

Wow, I don't understand how this got into development hell.

Sounds like something I would have loved to play as an EP 3, maybe a bit more tuning to give it some extra closure if this was still the plot going years after ep 3 was announced when it was suggested the game was going to be Half-Life 3 instead.

But all in all I feel like it gets really weird in a way I would have enjoyed and I'm disappointed it never got made, though I appreciate that we get something here after all this time.

but ever so delicious
There is the rumour that the nda for ep3 has expired so that's why we are getting this now.

I do wonder if the cliffhanger is the end of the Gordan story and the beginning of alyx as the main protagonist in ep4/hl-whatever, That could have been really cool 7 years or so ago.

I think the worst part is all the rumors and outright sentiment from Valve about how they couldn't talk about it because it would be more frustrating than not saying anything, and how golly gee the expectations were so high and the meanies would hate on it if it wasn't perfect (because valve has never taken a long time to release a manically hyped sequel and gotten accolades for it anyway).

Guess what, guys? You were wrong!!

Seriously. Just reading this alone and I am in awe; I would love to know why they didn't think something like this would be up to standard??

Just imagining that last scene with Gordon and his "shore" is giving me CHILLS. It would have been an idyllic ending! Metaphor for both Gordon's ending, the old "Valve," and the saga of Half-life.

I'm going Origin only after that!

But yeah, that sounded real good. Real unfortunate it never came to fruition in game form for all of us. At least we got a sliver of closure now.

But what if...

What if this is a controlled leak?

Now that everyone knows what happened...Valve can go straight to Half-Life 4.

So the team of scientists sent the Borealis to Antarctica as the combine was coming down on them, but there is no evidence of the Combine in Portal 2 dry dock?
Eh just a thought.

If we are never getting HL3 glad to have this at least. Shame it goes this way but i appreciate it.

Remember the time people believed the valve handbook about their workspace.

I don't think this is the unofficial confirmation that there will not be any future Half Life games from Valve like some are claiming.

But for the time being, I feel like I've received some form of closure at last. This is a weird feeling.

In b4 Marc's departure and this blog post are all part of some ARG for the upcoming reveal.

So HL3 has never actually existed.

A project called HL3 has existed within Valve at some point. This seems to prove that at some point EP3 was basically cancelled and whatever HL3 is it would likely be a separate thing to this.

There was speculation that EP3 got too big and became HL3 but this seems to kill that idea completely

Yep, we've waited 10 years for an unreleased hl2 expansion pack.

Valve has sadly gone the route of low budget card games and skins/crates for old games.......ohh how I wish greed wasn't a thing, we would be getting much better games than we do now.

That's why gamers who want Half-Life 3 should stop buying Valve products and services. We want HL3!

Was getting caught part of your plan?

Nope.

I'm done.

Valve has been dead to me for years, but now that I know this, I can safely throw the urn into the ocean.

Considering they canned the HL game Arkane was working on(maybe it was still EP3?), it seems like they don't want anyone touching the series. For the record i think there are several developers including Naughty Dog, and Machine Games who could finish it out just fine.

Heartbreaking. I would have absolutely loved to play that game.

I hope one day a similar short story pops up on Hideo Kojima's personal blog about the adventures of a certain Poison Viper.

Finally, I get to finish the story. I don't even know if I remember much of the story to begin with, but I do remember the cliff hanger.

I was so late to the party with HL2 Orange box PS3. I remember thinking that episode 3 would be soon, after I reached that cliff hanger, because of it. A decade later, no sign of episode 3.

HL3 was never a thing. Half-Life 2 Epsiode 3 which is what this plot summary is of was officially announced sometime around 2009 if my memory serves me right. Due to how much time has passed since and Valve's silence regarding EP3 people assumed that it eventually turned into a fully fledged sequel hence HL3 coming into existence as a meme.

The real problem is that they sold episode 1 and 2 on the promise of episode 3. It's not like they refunded people after they decided to scrap the project, leaving everyone with a half finished game. It's not even like it wasn't super successful, so you would think that, if it wasn't about money that they would at least feel obligated to end that chapter.

It's like the walking dead ending after half a season, the last episode being incredibly successfull and we'll received and then just *nothing*

Or a book writer, writing a trilogy that finds major success, then, splitting the last book up and then never bothering to finish it. He found a new interest in making cooking books.

I'd mark out if ND make "Hallow Lives" with the same story and character names as Laidlaw's blog.

Interesting take, idk if I would personally be down with ditching Gordon as the main protagonist/player character and it raises more questions about G-Mans motivations, but its certainly interesting.

God dammit Valve

They were working on EP4 (seriously) it was supposed to be a standalone sort of thing set in ravenholm

Absolutely.

It's the video game version of Dre's detox mixed with Valve becoming a monolith where people go to collect paychecks. There will be people there whom may have spent their entire career working on projects that were never released. Some of the top level designers working on VR projects that will never come out or controller drivers that while may be better designed do not impact players at all.

I was pretty sure Gaben himself said that it would be a full fledged sequel after nagging from fans.

I don't know that I buy Alyx just leaving Gordon to die, but at least we got some closure.

But hey, at least we got that DotA Hearthstone clone everyone was asking for...
