Media Create Sales: Week 24, 2017 (Jun 12 - Jun 18)

I think the idea is that it's a strategy RPG given he drew parallels to how Final Fantasy was setup with Terra Battle 2 being a new mainline game, and this is a spin-off with a strategy like title a la Final Fantasy Tactics.

The full image has a lot of varying terrain height and things like bridges and rivers that would fit with a Tactics-esque game as well:

I was going to say that Terra Battle already feels like a strategy game.

When looking at the new image though, I can see how it would be a strategy RPG.

Interesting, so the quality of the game was not the reason it tanked.

I'd say the quality of the game was good. The problem was the time between content updates.

I also didn't like that the game wasn't available in most regions of the world, had to get the .apk to install it.

I agree, though my guess is it's a more traditional one.

I'm pretty curious to see how the strategy RPG market evolves in mobile, since there's a fair amount of success with existing ones, but it feels like Japanese developers feel it might be one of the next big things given the increasing investment.

For example, CyGames is making Lost Order, which is a real-time strategy rpg (I don't think people are doing this right now?), and is directed by Matsuno, has Yoshida art, and is developed by Platinum Games. It looks pretty nice too:

That's what I was wondering earlier if Terra Wars was going to be an RTS since they already have a turn based game.

I can see with Lost Order that it doesn't look like it will be complicated like playing StarCraft. It's good that they are trying to expand genres because it could create a new hit for mobile.

No. All we know is that it uses claymation models captured with photogrammetry, with gameplay details coming after Terra Battle 2 launches this Summer. Sakaguchi did say that the title will give you a pretty good idea of how it plays though.

Unless you mean Terra Battle 2, which sounds like it's built around the same core mechanics as Terra Battle, but expanded/re-imagined and with higher production values for how they present it.

Was curious about Wars. I read up on TB2 in original thread on the announcement.

PS4 is holding up better than expected (I thought it would sell less than 20K/weekly in the slow summer months).

There was a "Days of Play" campaign that ended at June 18.

Prices for PS4 peripherals went down even 50% at some stores.

For reference the larger hardware number for Switch this week in Famitsu puts it about even with the Media-Create number for Switch. May have been some sort of adjustment made.

Strong start for ARMS, but a smaller than expected Switch bump.

It makes me somewhat concerned they won't have hardware available in sufficient quantities for Splatoon.

In my opinion, they should be dancing in the streets it's selling so well. It even has decent positioning on the Japanese eShop. For what it is, they cleaned up. Now, they should bring it out overseas!

Famitsu indicates that first week shipment of Arms was more or less as much as Splatoon's, but with a much lower sellthrough.

Second week sales will be more telling on how it'll keep doing moving forward.

Chris1964

Sales-Age Genius
Media Create will give the exact sell-through for Arms, we'll have a direct comparison with Splatoon. Right now Famitsu estimated initial shipment is somewhere between 150 and 200k.

Very solid debut for ARMS. Its a game built to have legs (multi player, new IP, on a small install base). Can easily see 500K LTD.

BoTW and MK8 both went up. Interesting.

Switch hardware continues to underwhelm supply wise. Assuming Nintendo holding back a lot of supply for next month.

Why should Nintendo held back supply? They can sell every Switch they make instantly. They can just not make more at the moment.

Unfortunately Nintendo made the decision to sell a Splatoon bundle, so they have the choice of either holding back some to package it with the release of Splatoon, or start selling Splatoon bundles before Splatoon is released.

Oh, true. Will be interesting to see how much bundles they prepared for this.

Because if they ship a bunch of switches during a week where nothing releases, sure they'll sell the switches, but what else will they sell? If they ship a bunch of switches the week something launches then people are more likely to buy the launching software with it because they are already in the door.

I wonder if the shipment actually was 50k this week or 40k per either tracker. Retail anecdote made me think 50k.

Probably more like 70k+ eventually, very very happy indeed they should be and perhaps just a faint glimour of hope for localising it for us unwashed westerners

I know it's a dream.... but I wish this would serve as some sort of "passed test" which would make SE start green-lighting games like they did during the DS/PSP days.

no Vita exclusives and barely any 3DS exclusives (compared to DS) hurts.

Why do you need exclusives? The fact that WoFF, DQB, and DQH are available on other platforms hinders your enjoyment of them on PSV?

Would be cool. But instead they seem to instead be upping the budget and putting those on PS4/X1 (Dissidia; Type0) or putting the on mobile (TWEWY ;_;)

3DS got very little. Bravely Default and KH3D being standouts. It's also getting DQXI but late in its life.

PSP to Vita support was a pretty massive drop off. Final Fantasy remaster of X and WoFF (which isn't any good)
Maybe some ports of DQ spin offs.

They might make more of that stuff this gen, who knows. Octopath Traveler (that's SE, right?) and I am Setsuna sequel is a start.

So after 17 weeks Switch will be 1mln HW, same as happened to Gamecube.

Don't know if DS broke this record, but afaik GC was the fastest system to have a 1mln seller

Really curious to see how Splatoon 2 will perform, considering that the userbase will be 3X than GC at Smash release...

Wow, that's very impressive for both Smash and the GCN. I didn't realize the attach ratio was so prevalent for that game in Japan. It'll definitely be interesting to see how Splatoon 2 performs on the Switch. I anticipate 1m in the first few weeks, which would be very notable.

So does this mean that they haven't ramped up production like what was rumored before, and are only just in the process of doing so?

Ramping production isn't instantaneous. This means that major uptick in production will be realized in Fall, which is about on time if they started ramping after launch. Its a months long process as lines have to be retooled and overhauled, or built entirely from scratch for the production of units. Sourcing parts and others also takes time. Its a long and complicated chain.

It starts as a trickle as lines warm up but eventually everything is running at full volume production, and that seems to be the Fall for the new production.

Nintendo apologize about stock shortage, more shipment in july + august planned, production ramped up in fall

Next week to have zero switches!

Excellent, wondering if they'll make it in time as said because production is ramped up in Fall.

I read this as actual realized volume (ie production of shippable units) will come in Fall. Ramp in production is likely months in the making.

Yeah, maybe. Edit: Now I see what you mean.

I'm just looking at machine translations for more details.

Currently, we continue to ship every week, we are working to deliver more than one product to customers. Also, in July and August, we will increase shipment volume this month, including continued shipment of "Nintendo Switch Splatoon 2 set".

For autumn and beyond, we will continue to work to ensure that as many products as possible can be delivered to our customers towards the end of the year, such as further strengthening our production system, we appreciate your understanding.

Tried to see any differences with another machine translation but it was rather funny.

July and August? I also increase the total shipment from this month including continuation shipment of "2 sets of Nintendo Switch SUPURATUN". Weekly shipment is continued at present, and I'm wrestling with a customer in order.

I wrestle in order to report even a while many more products to a more afternoon more production systems about after a while autumn, so please take care so that understanding may be given somehow.

At least they like to communicate with their customer directly, through wrestling. That's devoted.

Kimishima: "You better listen to me nee-san! The Elderly Man Kimishima is going to Switch things up, oh sugoi!

July is going to be a huge Splatfest, it's going to get messy, and sticky, but Kimishima will be there to make sure you don't miss out, with these special edition Splatoon 2 Switch bundles. (Oh, sugoi!)

And then in August, it's going to be a Monster of a month, if you're not there buying a Switch, I will hunt you down nee-san!"

1 million WW would be failure as even pokken is able to beat that number quite easily on Wii U without any free updates.

The least they should get for ARMS to be a success for me is 3 million WW. Their investment towards this new IP does not sounds like they are looking for some modest number at all.

100k FW in Japan is a great first step for sure. But i am talking about long term goals. If it only end up like 1 mil WW LTD, that is a guaranted failure for me and Nintendo i believe.
Yeah totally agree with you. Arms was made instead of a Mario Kart 9. Obviously Nintendo doesn't expect Arms to sell MK numbers, but they probably want it to do more than 1 million.

I hope its a success and has huge legs since its pretty damn fun. I am worried about the huge learning curve though since aiming arms, and just getting used to the perspective is really hard, atleast to me. But I've gotten better in my 22 hours of play time.

They also need to add some QOL stuff to it like detailed stat tracking like in Smash, and especially a option to play online party mode in only the mode you want like doubles or VS boss since its such a drag playing modes you don't want, especially when its 1VS1 which if I wanyed to play, I would play ranked.

But overall really have enjoyed it and the overall impression from people that own the game are good. Lets hope it keeps selling and has a long life with DLC and eventual sequels!
