It's a spin off. Not a mainline DQ game. Your expectations were way over the top, especially considering they didn't even ship anywhere near 1 million units week 1.

A mainline DQ game tends to sell 3million to over 4 million units, and there are several Dragon Quest spinoff entries (new DQM games) that sold over a million units though. The sales are more or less just the expected, putting things in context, we are talking about sales on 2 systems one of them is an established system with a the Final Fantasy, RPG fanbase and also the Musou fanbase on board.

I was wrong about how much this game would sell. It's doing quite well.

Which DQ spin-offs have sold over one million copies that aren't a part of the monster series?

Not in their first weeks though. LtD perhaps.

This isnt a complete list, but it shows a good number of titles at least:

http://garaph.info/softwaregroup.php?grid=192

Shows that Monster: Joker 1 & 2 sold over a million copies each for the spin-offs. Terry's Wonderland 3D is relatively close to a million. But again, the doesnt list every Dragon Quest game, so it might be more titles that sold over a million copies.

Is this total or Japan only? I think there's a good chance 300-500K copies will be sold worldwide if Sony bothers to market it.

Yep, those are the total sales (Garaph.info might not be 100% updated, so some of the later released games might have sold a bit more than what these numbers shows, but most of the should be up to date). Those sales numbers are for Japan only.

Yeah, Dragon Quests Heroes will most likely sell at least 1 million copies worldwide.

I said aside from those that are part of the Monsters series. By now that has become its own series.

The fact that sell through for DQH is over 80% for both PS3 and PS4 is also an excellent sign.

As predicted the PS4 version is the best selling non bundled PS4 game from day 1. I actually wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 version will overtake Knacks 400k but won't be disappointed if it doesn't.

I'm expecting sales of this game to be at over 720k after 5 weeks and exceed 800k lifetime.

PS4 LTD should exceed 350k and PS3 LTD should exceed 450k

Digital sales across PS3 and PS4 should boost that number a lot as well.

I think this shows that Japanese gamers WILL bite if there are games out that interest them. Japanese big hitter titles that are actually good will indeed draw the crowd. And even western games will still consistently keep PS4 in the top 3 out of all HW every week just like it has been doing.

620k /1065k - Sengoku Musou
435k / 850k - Musou Orochi** (inc PSP)
330k / 700k - Gundam Musou*** (inc PS2)

*Inc all versions of title such as re-releases. (Numbers are direct from Koei or estimated using final sell through figures)
**Musou Orochi sales excluding PSP = 380k / 675k
***Gundam Musou sales excluding PS2 = 180k / 390k

One thing to note is that Dynasty Warriors Gundam was a new IP launching exclusively on PS3 just 4 months after release. The PS3 install base at the time was 720k. The game was sold standalone and bundled with the 60GB PS3 and in it's first week sold 170k units (24% attach rate). Lifetime sales on the PS3 exceeded 340k. The PS2 version was released one year after with 150k opening week sales and more than 310k units LTD. Compared to DQH we have seen the PS4 and PS3 version released at the same time around 12 months after PS4 launch. The PS4 install base stands at 1189k with opening sales of DQH representing 23% of the install base (269k) this is a good number as the PS3 version was released alongside with much higher opening sales of 325k.

There are only 4 relevant platforms that could even be considered alive right now.

Surprisingly decent numbers for the PS4 and Vita this week. Really keen to see how those numbers for the PS4 go at the end of the month with the arrival of Bloodborne.

Next week is only Evolve right? Any japanese interest for that? Will the PS4 bump this week remain stable or drop back down till FF Type-0 release?

I think this shows that Japanese gamers WILL bite if there are games out that interest them. Japanese big hitter titles that are actually good will indeed draw the crowd. And even western games will still consistently keep PS4 in the top 3 out of all HW every week just like it has been doing.

this isn't really much of an achievement lol

The "bundle included" is not a good indication. Animal Crossing and Mario Kart 8 have the "bundle included" this week.

Every game with a hardware bundle has the "bundle included" no matter what week it is.

The leaked number is THE thing that points at all the bundles being included.

I don't see the point. MK8 and AC have the bundle included thing because their total sales.

There was no bundle this week for DQH. If MC says that they're including bundles and there's no bundle this week, it means they are refering to december bundles. So, they might be included in its total sales.

Wii Party U had a bundle that Famitsu included but MC NOT and MC said it was NOT included.

http://www.4gamer.net/games/117/G011794/20131106065/

For me it's confirmed. The only other confirmation that is needed if the bundles number is 64k.

Does this "leak blog" get Famitsu numbers or MC numbers? If they get Famitsu numbers, then it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, since they have the total sales at 566k. There have certainly been more than 30-40k of the bundles sold before now, and more should have sold this week. Considering the jump in PS4 hardware sales, it's it more likely that the ~530k number (if accurate in the first place) just didn't count bundles sold last week?

The blog uses super... MC numbers.
He leaked "this is Sparta" (300) on January 21th at 12:21 (japanese time). MC/Famitsu numbers release at 22:00.

I wonder if AC can overpass X / Y.... it would be the first time the top seller game for Nintendo handhelds is not Pokemon

Which Pokemon sold more than NSMB on DS?

From the moment Media Create had the indication of included bundle it was clear they included LTD sales of it. I don't understand why so many posts were spent for this.

Animal Crossing New Leaf has seriously done remarkably well. In some ways, while it's still behind Wild World, I'd say the game has done a lot more this gen than with the DS (just because the DS was already just that successful). It's also game that's retained its fanbase VERY VERY well in JP.

4 NDS Animal Crossing: Wild World 335,425 5,239,465 Nintendo 2005-11-23
2 - 3DS Animal Crossing: New Leaf 721,786 4,321,884 Nintendo 2012-11-08 (and still going)

I wouldn't be surprised in AC:NL gets a good bit over 4.5M by the end of its life. It'll be interesting to see how close it can creep towards 5M.

Which Pokemon sold more than NSMB on DS?

Exactly what I was going to post =).

There's also Type-0 on the week before. That could push some hardware too. It's a remake but the original game sold fairly well.

While I don't think these are particularly great sales for my prospective market leader this gen after receiving larger software releases. I hope it's not just a complete blip. Even sustained sales in the 20k region would quickly place PS4 on a higher trajectory than it has been for a good chunk of its life to date.

No. evidence showed that in Japan. I said big cross-gen titles. DQ was the first, Persona will be next one.

And also vita recovered a bit through having titles multiplatform with PSP.

Not really considering the Persona fanbase is nowhere near as large as the Dragon Quest one.

Dragon Quest Heroes shouldn't be able to reach 1M sales while Persona 5 seems to be a potential 500k+ seller, so there isn't such a huge gap between these two titles.

I wonder if the ratio PS3/PS4 will be as good for Persona 5 though, Dragon Quest Heroes was more announced as a PS4 title from the get go with lots of media/trailers using this version whereas the PS3 one was only showed very late and displaying how it was behind on the graphics side.

Persona 5 always has been a PS3 title, it even looks like it was delayed to have a PS4 SKU, recently we even learned that all medias were coming from PS3 and we have no idea how the PS4 version could be better.

Maybe we will learn about it at a later stage, or maybe it's an half assed port for the Western audience just like God Eater 2 RB, as a Persona fan myself I sure don't feel the need to upgrade to a PS4 for Persona 5 right now.

Do we have the list of titles launching for each platform (WiiU, PS4, 3DS, VITA etc) for the next three month in Japan.

Sorry if it has been asked before.

I don't think there are any indications that Persona 5 is much more than a ~500k title at best. DQH looks on target to be a ~800k title. That's a pretty significant gap. Most games in Japan don't even sell 300k.

Yes it's a pretty significant gap, but how many titles sell between 500k-1M nowadays?

I was just pointing out that despite the gap they are more or less in the same category of "big titles" which is 500k-1M.

500k-1M is a huge margin. It's better to look at stuff in more segments. There are many, many more titles which sell 400-600k compared to titles which sell 600-800k for example. It's definitely not the "same category". If Persona 5 manages to actually sell in the 500k range, it would be comparable to stuff like Yakuza, not stuff like RE6 and One Piece Musou. Incidentally, there's a Yakuza game coming out right about now!
