When you open the orb changer do you right click > run as administrator? Also are your DPI (font size) settings normal or did you change it?

I lost an entire day to playing with my desktop.

A year ago, I installed Rainmeter after seeing Lifehacker's Desktop of the Week. I was overwhelmed at first, but soon found Omnimo and the "Metro" UI. I loved it.

Fast forward a year, and I was bored. The skin takes up a lot of space on the desktop and is far from minimal. It just felt... cluttered. I uninstalled and did not even bother looking for other skins. Installing Omnimo was enough work.

Then I found this thread. And UXStyle. And, rediscovered Rainmeter (I had to reinstall it).

I fell in love with the squared edges of Windows 8 VS for Win7 for my Explorer windows, spent hours looking for a new wallpaper and found some minimalist skins. I'm not done and am not brave enough to replace the Orb - but I love how my desktop is coming along.

I hadn't, but now that I have it doesn't seem to do anything. I've taken ownership of both the orb changer and the Windows folder. Rebooting doesn't have any effect either. Does the image file matter? The one I'm trying is a .bmp file.

Much appreciated! Always love your set ups. Question though:

What are you using for the weather panel? It's Omnimo, right? How'd you get it to look like that? I'm talking about the icons, as well as removing the dividers in between each day.

Ah i forgot i did change the weather icons. Yes it is Omnimo. Removing the dividers is actually a glitch (so it might have been fixed), but when you make the panel size smaller it makes the dividers disappear.

To change the icons you have to copy the images over from another skin into the omnimo weather skin folder (they should be numbered equally for each weather condition). IIRC i used the images from the enigma skin.

That's pretty strange. What orb is it?

There is a "better" orb changer that I use (on my desktop, i use the one in the OP on my netbook). It's kind of annoying to use though and you have to have a fresh copy of explorer.exe to use it (which would mean you have to run a "sfc /scannow" in a terminal window first).

I want to see the orb first though, at the very least it should apply, it's strange that it doesn't.

It was the one in the Elune theme. But no need to see it: I just tried with one of orbs from your metro icons set (the one you're using for your netbook, specifically a small taskbar icon since that's what I use), to no effect... I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, if I'm even doing something wrong.

Ok well you can use this one i'm using then, it should work (and actually is a little safer on your system, just a little harder to use)

What you want to do is just extract this to a folder, and run the 7OrbCustomizer.bat file as an administrator.

You then patch in the default orb just to get explorer.exe restarted. (press 1 in the menu)

If it tells you that it can't you may have to press 3 to repair explorer.exe (this shouldn't happen since you said nothing got patched)

After the default orb gets themed again don't restart or anything, but immediately find the orb you want to patch, and drag it to the 7OrbCustomizer.bat file.

After that's done it should patch it and you can reboot.


It should be said if you have UAC disabled you don't have to go through all that, you can just drag and drop the orb you want :p


*edit* thinking about it, if you have UAC disabled it's the better solution, I might change the instructions in the OP with this one.

Thanks again for your help. After struggling a bit I managed to do pretty much every step, but after I drag the orb on the .bat file (btw what I should do is leave the customizer open, drag the image on the actual file in the folder, then patch by pressing 1, right?) and try to patch, I get the following error (translating from French): "administrators: the mapping between the account names and the security IDs was not performed. Access denied."

Will my 7 orb woes ever end?

That is indeed strange, seems like you have an issue with permissions on your comp. Are you logged on as a user with administrative privileges?

I'm logged on as the administrator. Have only one account. But now that you mention it I often get prompts like "you must have administrative privileges to continue" and then I just press continue and it works. I've always wondered what the deal was with that, and even when I check the account settings it does seem like I'm the administrator... Frankly, I don't understand.

When you get those prompts, do you have UAC off?
Also what version of windows 7 are you running?

Copy away!

I don't know the name of the font, but it comes with the skin Encoded. I simply edited the skin to use the bold version -- replace "whtlightr" with "whtboldr" -- I preferred font with more weight.

It's obviously an issue with permissions on your comp, but how extensive i have no idea. Windows can be (rightfully) bitchy about it too.

It's okay, you've been really helpful. Thank you helping me out. In about a week from now I'll be doing a clean install on my new SSD. I hope that then I'll be able to change that reluctant orb :lol.

I actually moved away from that wallpaper, because the Unity changes the bar's colour to reflect that of the wallpaper (so it turned purple).

New one! :D

Edied icon lenses via MyUnity (removed the backlighting of icons) and yeah, I'm happy with it.
