Your argument completely falls apart because 'gi' (the closest counterparts) in Greek are pronounced as a 'Yhee' sound and isn't close to a 'J'. Fail.

That doesn't matter because the rule is for English not Greek. Regardless of how the phoneme is pronounced in Greek the rule in English is G-I = soft g or dʒ especially for words of Latin and Greek origin.
