i think Kojima and his crew convinced Konami that he needed the new engine to achieve the photorealistic graphics he was after.
Man, Konami could make a killing on licensing fees I'm sure.

Looking at other devs that went independent it's pretty save to say that Kojima will never make a high buget game again. Maybe if Sony hires him or something but I kinda doubt that. Maybe Del Torro will get him some connections in the movie industry and he finally becomes a director like he always wanted to be.This unfortunately could hurt Kojima in finding his next role and the scope of the project. He is going to get a ton of questions on that alleged $80M budget and it might scare off some potential suitors.
Sounds like he just needs a project manager to help him out with this kind of stuff.
80 million is a lot pre-marketing.
Post-marketing, not so much.
Without context for which this number is, it could either be surprisingly low or absolutely unreasonable.
You realize they don't make $60 on each copy sold right
It was, but it isn't as disappointing when contextualized by the last two Suikoden games. Tierkreis and the PSP game are certainly not what I'm looking for.So Suikoden was under development?
The game will probably be good, but the hate for Konami will definitely factor into sales. I don't see it getting more than 1.5 million personally.

I think you have a point there. He'll never get the kind of budgets that Konami afforded him. Having said that, when a company does decide to hire Kojima, they aren't just getting a Game Designer, they're getting a whole brand along with a fiercely loyal core fanbase that will likely follow him.
80 million doesn't sound that bad to me, it's coming out on five platforms and I expect it to be super polished.

WHAT?! In case you are serious this game is coming to pretty much every platform. Last gen sales may not be much but I expect PC,PS4 and XB1 sales to be huge. It'll sell at least on par with MGS4 and then even more when there are Steam sales.
Right this second I'm editing an international project management society's newsletter, and that shit is exactly what Kojima needs. You're damn right, Troj.
I didn't mean overall 1.5, I was saying the launch window which I think for a developer is one month?WHAT?! In case you are serious this game is coming to pretty much every platform. It really isn't, it probably clears the average pretty easy but it's hardly some super drastic number.80 million doesn't sound that bad to me, it's coming out on five platforms and I expect it to be super polished.
Someone is now photoshopping Konami's logo to make it Soviet Union flag, I know.
I'm not supporting this company with my money. Will buy MGSV used.
The part about cameras and punch cards sounds absurd. Might there even be laws against such a thing...?

He does. Well, he did one. And that was not even close to be a quality game like the ones he made while at Capcom.with all due respect to kenji inafune and yu suzuki, etc. they aren't on kojima's level at this point and time. those guys made great classic games a long time ago that sold relatively well, but kojima still makes viable AAA games. just because inafune and Iga have to go to kickstarter to make mega man and castlevania clones, doesn't mean kojima will have to do the same. it's a rather poor comparison. at worst, kojima could go down a path similar to shinji mikami, who is still releasing AAA-ish games

The only one you could argue is still making big AAA games is Kamiya, although I cannot really judge how much AAA they are since I haven't played any of them (don't like the style).
Uh MGS2 sold 7 million on PS2 alone and that was in 2001 when the PS2 had been out for a shorter period than the current gen consoles.
Yeah, Trojan is on the ball with that one.

Well, we can only hope but like I said, I doubt it. He'd first have to find a publisher that is willing to invest a huge amount of money in him and with the shrinking AAA market I don't see who he can turn to. Sony would be a given when looking at the past but aside from that? I don't really see it, sorry. Not that I wouldn't wish it for him. He's been wanting to do something new for such a long time, now being free from the MGS shackles he could finally do it. I just can't imagine him doing some small game.yeah, but my point is that kojima is still making AAA games. those other guys are not and have not for a long time. a direct comparison between kojima and another gaming director leaving really can't be made. kojima is closer to west and zampella or bungie leaving MS than iga or inafune. i would expect he'd get an opportunity to make a relatively big budget video game by someone.

MGS2 was 15 years ago and things have changed significantly since then - I would definitely not use that as a barometer. That game got a huge bump from MGS1 that isn't around anymore and there weren't the huge number of titles available on consoles like there are today. MGS5 won't do 7M and it will far exceed if it hits over 4M.

Pretty much.If you don't buy MGSV, you prove them right.
It's lose/lose. Personally I'm going to go for the option that lets me play an awesome game. No disrespect to anyone who skips it on principal though.

AAA is a term for budget size, not for quality. Pretty sure none of what Platinum Games makes has an AAA budget, ever.He does. Well, he did one. And that was not even close to be a quality game like the ones he made while at Capcom.

Watch Dogs was $68 million before the delay, so if MGSV was $80 before delay, then yes.$80m sounds absolutely absurd. Isn't that more than a Ubisoft AAA game?
