Nvidia just announced a handheld - releasing Q2 2013

The concept is interesting (being able to stream from PC and such) and a designed from the ground android portable has potential.

But is probably the ugliest portable ever, also seems like it will cost a ton of money.

I'm not a PC gamer, but this does make me wish Sony does the same with Vita for streaming PS4 games. If I was a PC gamer with a huge steam library I would be all over this.

Thing I most excited about is streaming becoming a thing: where Nintendo goes so does the industry and I want my Vita to be that streaming device for PS3 or 4. I might actually get one of these since the performance is only restricted by PC specs...and if anything can be streamed seems like emulators and such would be a pretty easy feat to pull off.

I have a bad feeling we'll be writing an early obituary on this one.

I guess "bad" is the wrong word since I don't work for Nvidia, so I don't give a shit about whether it sinks or swims. So call it a feeling. Awkward product, sent out to compete for attention against the major mobile players and nextgen consoles.

Good luck with that.

It's just doubling down on the further expansion of the PC gaming market. They know how many 6xx series cards they've sold, and I don't think that NVIDIA would bet on a sizable customer base coming from outside of that.

I don't think this is intended to be a Vita/3DS competitor, at least, it doesn't seem to be. I have a Vita and this would be a completely different device for me.

to be it needs steady stream of exclusives (smartphones and tablets are dominating and they play android games......)

also the price needs to be below 300.

Wait so the PC Streaming will only work on Nvidia cards?

650 or better only

Yeah, I'm a PC gamer with a huge Steam library and I'm all over this.

You can get a close look at the device in that video, controls look solid to me.

Annoyed me how the interviewer is basically letting them sell the device.
Forgive me if am wrong but you need a PC to get on Steam, right? The interviewer is next to useless on that and makes it sound like Steam is built in. As well as his '4k output' tripe.

Its like a fucking sales video. Pretty useless.
------------------------

Anyway, is it just me or is that screen wayy too forward? No one seems to hold it comfortably. Its all ARMS EXTENDED STRAIGHT and bent flat.
Its like a laptop screen, except its not a laptop. Its a controller.

EDIT: If the streaming works on other devices, then this device looks fail to me, but I'd be excited for other devices I can stream my PC stuff from. Just I'd prefer a WiiU-esque design.

One of the guys demoing HAWKEN tilted the screen a bit further. But still not to an angle I'd say would comfortably.

This device is definitely NOT for me.

If some people like it and enjoy it, then I wish them a great time. But this is, to me, neither a "portable" nor a console. I don't really know what it is exactly, or why I would want one instead of a normal handheld or console. And Android, IMO, is still not ready for primetime for gaming. As a phone/tablet OS it's great, but as a mainstream gaming platform, no.

Yeah, this really isn't a handheld competitor. It's a controller that allows you to play android games on the go and stream your pc games to it while you are in bed or on the couch(if you don't have comfy couch pc setup). I would probably never take it out of the house, I would be afraid the screen would get damaged somehow if I took it on the train/bus.

Yep yep. This exactly.

For some reason, if I'm on the couch next to the wife playing a game, she is far less bothered than me holed up in my office for 8 hours running benchmarks and playing Dota 2.

Guys this is a competitor to traditional handhelds as any other android portable device out there. The extra funtionalities just add value to the product that neither of the actual portables has.

And with gamepad controls built from the ground.

... trying to imagine gaming on the couch with a 9 foot HDMI cable hanging out of the back of that controller being something pleasant. Those cables are way thicker than the average console controller cord (not that those are common these days)

Then why is all the focus on the ability to stream? The portability and android games seem to be the 'extra functionalities' in all of the marketing so far.

How surprising.

Wow! Little bit bitchy there!
If you'd like to know why its cause I don't want a big flip screen just sort of sitting there.

If am streaming to a screen, I have this thing on the end, meanwhile the tilt (it hopefully is better) isn't very good at all.

A screen built into the controller gives you a huge amount more flexibility with it.
But okay. I always find it weird when a defence team jumps in so fucking quickly; if I wasn't interested in hearing more of this device I would of pointed out how ugly it was and left.

PC streaming is a big plus to me. Hence why I'm asking about the device in connection with that.

Hm, am hoping this is just a marketing thing. Wanting to show off the device from certain angles and what not.

I had Splashtop running on my Asus tablet paired with a 360 controller. It ran Skyrim at about 30FPS but with a hell of a lag. It whet my appetite for something more like this.

At home, I have my gaming PC in one room, and TVs in several rooms. With this, I can take the machine into any of the rooms and continue playing in more comfortable surroundings. This could even trump/replace the steambox. Why have a dedicated, less powerful machine in the living room when you can take this little machine anywhere and stream where you like?

I know once you move out of the home LAN, lag would be an issue, but I guess there's nothing technically stopping you from trying out on the move or in the office, or tethered to a mobile device. It may just be a bit shit, but still would be interesting. I may be wrong there, I know nothing about networks.

Nvidia are in a really interesting position. I doubt they're expecting to sell the number that a traditional console would sell, but then they're not trying to push any proprietary formats with it, like vita or 3ds carts. Android, steam, emulators - already exist and will continue to do so.

But yeah, this has got a jaded gamer super excited - I even think the thing looks good. I've often looked at a controller and thought why doesn't someone just go all out and put triggers and handles on a portable. I hope the screen is as good as the Vita's.

Also, downsampling would be nice.

Maybe because they want to sell more cards?. The thing is a pure android device (this only will atract the attention of a few ppl out there) that can play any android game/app out there.

Is the first specialised gaming android device, and android/iOS gaming have been a rival fro traditional portables for quite some time.

More tilt would be ideal. Near 180 degree even. But I like the location of the screen where it is. Given the option of playing GBA games on the top or bottom DS screens, I always found the top screen preferable.

weird. Now this game environment is getting crowded. Interesting handheld idea, but I'm not sure this has a space given what's happening in the market. Game dedicated handheld devices are slowly being phased out of relevance, inch by inch, and I don't think there's room for Nvidia (let alone Sony, lol).

I'm not sure what you mean here, can you elaborate?

As far as being a 'Pure Android Device', that seems pretty disingenuous. Maybe you don't have a PC that will be able to take advantage of the streaming, but this is a pretty big deal for people who do. Maybe you don't understand that 'Android' doesn't mean anything other than a code kernel.

NVidia Should have lowered their price to partner with the console makers.

AMD stole their console business by undercutting them.

Its all stemming from the PC market. I think people are getting jittery over there about the future.
How does that correlate with this? Why can't it simply be trying to capture a market that is otherwise kind of f'd up and ad hoc? Occam's razor.

*edit*

Just so people understand, this is kind of like Alienware's X51 in terms of what the device is about. It's not a new platform. It's not a direct competitor to consoles, albeit it is indirect. It's a device that taps into TWO existing platforms and the games that they offer so you can play these games in ways that would otherwise be impossible or a pain to deal with.

Getting an HTPC in the living room that is powerful enough to run modern games at reasonable rates is an expensive endeavor. This is what the market is.

We are quickly rushing up to the point where Nvidia is going to offer the streaming tech software/apps to everyone aren't we? This is where Google, Amazon etc make their money. Get their content on every box. Microsoft's current gaming strategy with developing for one box isn't conducive to that is it? They mentioned the possibility of an app for the Xbox 360 in the keynote, and Valve would probably be immensely happy with that, but will Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo be okay such an app? I mean you're going to see your home PC become the media server streaming to your crazy expensive TV, pricey iPad, the phone you already have, and even all the $50 dongles that people will be buying to plug into every old TV in the house. If Microsoft themselves gets into this market with the 720 being the streaming device (and presumably Windows 8 as well) I wonder what conflict will occur. Does Microsoft worry that allowing a streaming app on their console will cause the 720 to simple become a dumb box that only captures signals and everyone will just buy the Steam versions of console games because they look better? Look how they reacted to Steam crossplay with Portal 2 and CS:GO. Obviously there will be a large segment of the audience who won't pay for an expensive PC, but I can see a larger than normal collection of hardcore gamers moving over. Almost treating the prospect of buying a great PC as buying a refrigerator.

The design looks like a mix of a Nights analog pad and an US SNES or first gen DS, codename tank. It's like when your disgusted but still have to watch. Specs sound nice.

Interesting design, I'll give the Nvidia Shield that. But it looks pricey to me. Also looks fragile. And that controller looks far less comfortable to hold than the X360 controller. I also wonder about the weight of the device.

Regardless of all that, it's almost certain that this thing will fail, just like Ouya. It doesn't matter if it's meant to play existing games from your Steam library. The Shield will be a niche product at best. I hope Nvidia didn't blow a crapload of money into R&D of this thing. Otherwise I have a hard time seeing how they could recoup costs.

There's only so much available market to go around. Plus I still think that dedicated gaming handhelds are a slowly dying breed.

This is so right on.

I don't think this is something that can be integrated into the current big three console market though, so I'm not sure if it's even worth speculating on.

I think the biggest growing market is this group of people here. In this sense, it's about capturing something that doesn't exist outside of a purpose-built gaming HTPC, which is a niche of a niche due to price.

I want one of these. This is so perfect for home use. I would never take this out of my home but it is perfect for me since my PC is hooked up to my main TV for the comfy couch setup.

If the girlfriend wants to watch TV at a time when im gaming thats now going to be ok as all I have to do is continue playing on this bad boy while she watches xfactor or some shit.

Will this only work with steam or will it work with any PC games you have installed such as origin games or retail games?
