PS4 vs PS1/PS2/PS3 in sales so far

And this is without Japan. Insane.

I too look forward to the age where Sony and Valve are the two great game platform titans. It should be a very interesting era.

I just hope the PS4 gets popular enough in Japan for japanese developers to seriously consider building AAA production JRPG's again this generation. Not in crazy numbers, just enough to have 3-4 each year that look / play spectacular.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

8 months = 4.2 June 30th
11 months = 5.5 September 30th
14 months = 10.4 December 31st
17 months = 12.6 End of FY 2007 March 31st
20 months = 14.2 June 30th
23 months = 16.6 September 30th
26 months = 21.1 December 31st

Thanks for that

It'll be interesting to see how much of an impact Japan has on sales, given the state of their console market these days.

Some more info:

Didn't know this was worthy enough for a new thread!

For greater context, I expanded the sales to an even 34 month comparison.

Somebody can make a new graph if they want.

PS1:

4 months (one territory) - March 31st, 1995 - 0.85 million
10 months - September 30th, 1995 - 1.77 million
16 months - March 31st, 1996 - 4.26 million
22 months - September 30th, 1996 - 8.07 million
28 months - March 31st, 1997 - 13.50 million
34 months - September 30th, 1997 - 22.50 million

PS2:

1 month (one territory) - March 31st, 2000 - 1.41 million
7 months (one territory) - September 30th, 2000 - 3.52 million
13 months - March 31st, 2001 - 10.61 million
19 months - September 30th, 2001 - 19.58 million
22 months - December 31st, 2001 - 24.99 million
25 months - March 31st, 2002 - 28.68 million
28 months - June 30th, 2002 - 33.27 million
31 months - September 30th, 2002 - 41.56 million
34 months - December 31st, 2002 - 49.59 million

PS3:

1 month - December 31st, 2006 - 1.7 million
4 months - March 31st, 2007 - 3.5 million
7 months - June 30th, 2007 - 4.2 million
10 months - September 30th, 2007 - 5.5 million
13 months - December 31st, 2007 - 10.4 million
16 months - March 31st, 2007 - 12.6 million
19 months - June 30th, 2007 - 14.2 million
22 months - September 30th, 2007 - 16.6 million
25 months - December 31st, 2007 - 21.1 million
28 months - March 31st, 2008 - 22.7 million
31 months - June 30th, 2008 - 23.8 million
34 months - September 30th, 2008 - 27.0 million

PS4:

1 day - November 16th, 2013 - 1 million
2 weeks - December 1st, 2013 - 2.1 million
1 month - December 28th, 2013 - 4.2 million
3 months - February 8th, 2014 - 5.3 million

A lot of this speaks to the efficiency and capacity of industrial manufacturing these days.

Those factories in China can sure make a lot of stuff. To be able to put out that many boxes in so many territories at once is crazy. The numbers are a bit skewed from the ps2 days because of that though

Efficiency at a cost, the PS4 isn't really upto sony's standards in-term of built quality. The fact that the plastic on the majority of PS4's has brighter patches in some spots, some are worse than others( look above the USB ports and below the LED light bar) and the system even creaks when i lift it with one hand a really far cry from my launch PS3.

Well, it's selling well but it's not going to do PS2 numbers:
13 months - March 31st, 2001 - 10.61 million
19 months - September 30th, 2001 - 19.58 million

So ~9 million sold in those 6 months for the PS2, which don't include a November or December.

Things look great for the PS4 so far, but it's a marathon, not a race: I really hope they can continue the pace that they're on, because it can only mean great things for gamers.

Also, the PS4 is in dire needs of some major fixes/updates, so let's see if, in the coming months, SONY really is listening to their loyal customers.

And we question analysts predicting consoles will break the 100k mark. Awesome momentum for the PS4 right now. I wonder how Xbox One fairs against Xbox and Xbox 360, I'm sure it's doing well comparatively too, even if not as good as PS4.

The PS2 dominated the race early on, and the competitors gave up half way.

It was different based from what happened last gen with the Wii dominating but the other 2 did well for themselves as well.

1) - It's too early to draw any conclusions.

13 months
Code:
       HW LTD

PSP -> 15.03 m

PS2 -> 10.61 m

PS3 -> 10.4 m

PS1 -> 3.4 m

2) - FY 2014/15 is the first serious test for the PS4. Analysts expect the PS4 to sell 10 m - 12 m. It seems reasonable.

PS1 Production Shipments (Unit: Million)
Code:
Hardware Ap-Jn Jl-Sp Oc-Dc Ja-Mr FY

FY 1996/97 na na na na 9.20

PS2 Production Shipments (Unit: Million)
Code:
Hardware Ap-Jn Jl-Sp Oc-Dc Ja-Mr FY

FY 2001/02 4.34 4.62 5.42 3.69 18.07

PS3 Sell - in (Unit: Million)
Code:
Hardware Ap-Jn Jl-Sp Oc-Dc Ja-Mr FY

FY 2007/08 0.7 1.3 4.9 2.2 9.1

3) You can't replicate what the PlayStation 2 did in NA + JP.

PS2 Production Shipments (Unit: Million)
Code:
                           NA + JP

Hardware Ap-Jn Jl-Sp Oc-Dc Ja-Mr FY

Bit of a worthless comparison really, i mean you cant possible compare the sales of say the PS1 or even the PS2 to PS4 sales....gaming is soo much more mainstream in 2014 than it was in 1995 so of course sales will be up when comparing

Of course, that's why the PS3 sold more than the PS2 did. Except it didn't.

All data is relevant when comparing. You don't just stop comparing because times have changed, you just try and factor that change in to the numbers. The PS3 existed in a time where more people would play games, and after the huge success of the PS2. But it didn't sell as well. Why is that? Well price, competition and games library is the answer. The comparisons can still be made.

For all the crap PS3 got early on it was almost equal in sales to PS2 after 13 months?

The PS2 didn't come out in the US for 8 months, the PS3 was available WW by month 4, and a year after the Gen had already started with the 360. It also had BluRay which helped drive adoption as it was much cheaper to buy that than a BluRay drive.

The PS4 has been out in NA and EU since November and Japan from February, for comparison.

Long term, the PS2 will still reign supreme. It sold 100million consoles in 5 years 9 months, or an average of 1.44m a month every month.

It's doing really well but it's going to slow down. In fact, I don't think it has a real chance to ever catch the PS2. Sony had every single demographic buy a PS2 that gen. A lot of the casuals are going to be using their smartphones and what not and that's going to be the difference.

I don't think anyone really expects it to long term. The back half of 2001 and 2002 were insane.

However, if they sell 10 million PS4s between Feb 9th 2014 and Feb 8th 2015, they'll still be ahead of the PS2. Barely.

They would then have to sell 14-15m from Feb 9th 2015 to Feb 8th 2016 to match the PS2.

Even more the year after.

Sony will just be happy with all that money from people buying the third party games on their system rather than on a competing one. It's not just about the hardware sales. Being the go to place for every multiplat is an enviable position, especially when the gap between versions is as large as it is.
