Resident Evil 2 Remake Confirmed [WE DO IT!]

It's called a puzzle because you're supposed to figure it out.,, you know, with your brain. Some can be solved by simple trial and error, but most of them (all?) have hints that demand a bit of thinking, they all demand exploring. Why would you want a puzzle not to be puzzling?

I for one hope they keep it all in, I'm sick of being told what to do like most modern games do, it's insulting to my intelligence. If you can't solve the puzzle, tough luck then you don't deserve to progress. It's an obstacle you have to overcome.

Considering that RE2 never had a proper improved graphics remake in the same manner that the original game had, wouldn't this take a whole lot more effort than REmake HD took? I mean I'm grateful, but wouldn't it have been easier to do another game like Code Veronica X or some other more modern RE title?

Yes. Naturally.

REmake HD, for all extents and purposes, is at its heart just a port of a decade-old Gamecube game.

This will be a full-on, full-scale remake from the ground up.

It's going to be a brand new game, not a port. It's the same transition going from RE1 to REmake. It had to be built from scratch.

However, it also paid off, the game was amazing, and it also was a game most in need of a remake due to outdated visuals and other technological shortcomings... shortcomings shared more with RE2 than Code Veronica. Code Veronica actually already got an HD version released last console generation. It's pretty solid.

A proper remake rebuilt from the ground up will take much longer than a remaster, yes.

Code Veronica X was remastered back in 2011.

Oh I had no idea! Just looking it up, that's fantastic news, although now I feel a little behind. Are there any other RE titles that need a proper remake or remastering that haven't gotten it yet? All I know of besides 2 is, well, 3.

How long do you guys predict this will be completed not counting a release date?.

IMO 3 years depending if things go smoothly , and I think while REmake took one year to finish that was a totally different beast and not as open ended as 2.

2 has lots more different locations than 1

The streets at the start of the game along with the alley ways to reach RPD
RPD
The Sewers
The Laboratory
The final area of the game when you fight boss.

Not to mention each scene playing out different in each of those areas depending on who you picked.

1 & 2

No equivalent | City streets (brief)
Mansion | R.P.D.
Sewers | Residence
Caves | No equivalent
Lab | Lab

I think 1 is bigger, especially given the size of the sewers compared to the residence, although there is the path from the sewers to the lab (factory?)

Now that you mention it it could be bigger.
I think it's the various locations that threw me for a loop as being bigger.

I don't think this will have pre-rendered backgrounds like REmake which would take longer not counting if they add anything new on top.

It WAS bigger. Then they scrapped the version with the larger factory area (basically non-existent in 2) and heavily scaled down the lab. Hopefully they'll include some of this in the remake.

1 was indeed bigger and more juicy. Especially when compared to the REmake. 2 had a lot of reused areas in both scenarios. Neither of the available areas (streets, R.P.D. or the lab) were particularly big. I mean, I'm a pretty slow player by all means and even I only needed around 5 hours for each scenario. There is infinitely more room to add additional stuff in the remake of 2 than there was in the remake of 1.
I for one hope they link both scenarios even more to each other than in the original. I'd like to have more of these cool moments like when you find that burning helicopter in scenario 1 and then see how it ended up there in scenario 2. That was so unique and amazing.

Just a little curious, have you played both Resident Evil 1 and Remake?

Because there were some areas reworked and some areas added. If they can get it right with Resident Evil 2's remake, then I am perfectly fine with them reworking and adding areas, because that is what made the remake so much better than the original. There's room for expansion at the RPD/Umbrella labs without leaving behind what makes Resident Evil 2, well, Resident Evil 2.

Yeas I have. This is purely just from being s massive fan of this particular entry. I know areas added will probably be good.

I love RE2's layout, but there's definitely room for expansion. The RCPD doesn't have bathrooms, for one - I smell an opportunity there. And in the original game, there was an error in geography; the lobby has a slope that reaches the West Office (see below), but since it's raised, this effectively sits on level "1.5", but there is never any indication of another slope, nor a set of stairs when you take the long route around (waiting room, hallways, to the staircase area, to the filing room, etc). The waiting room doesn't make sense either if the office was raised due to the slope. The second floor also had more square footage than the 1st. So an update to the layout would be much appreciated!

Considering there's an "official map" of Racoon City, there may also be an opportunity to expand the city segments without making stuff up.

InvaderGames closes down the project of Resident Evil 2 Reborn and is invited by Capcom to discuss further ideas
Hello everybody!
First of all we want to thank all of you for the passion and the attachment that you have daily shown us. We'll be always grateful.
Today we want to join us of a very special day for InvaderGames. After the official announcement of the Resident Evil 2 remake by Capcom, we officialise the end of the works on Resident Evil 2 Reborn.
Contrary to what might be thought, this is wonderful news for us and, as fans, we're so happy that Capcom has decided to take the lead of the project and to develop the remake awaited for years by everybody (nobody could bring back to life the masterpiece of 1998 better than the creators themselves). Meanwhile as developers, we're honoured to announce that we've been officially invited to meet Capcom.
Capcom called us up in advance of the announcement and asked us if we would mind stopping the project as they had longer term plans for a Resident Evil 2 Remake. They have invited us to a meeting to discuss further ideas.
Even though we cannot complete the project of Resident Evil 2 Reborn, we're happy that what we've shown has achieved consents from worldwide fans and especially has been noticed from Capcom itself. We promise that the work done until now will be useful for future projects, we won't disappoint your and our expectations.
Thank you again for letting us to be where we are now in spite of the long way that remains to be walked through, we hope to focus soon on the biggest professional chance that we could get. Once more, we're very grateful to Capcom for having noticed our work and having appreciated as much the love we feel about the Resident Evil saga as developing videogames. It's very rare to find such a leader company in the industry so much open minded and sensitive to the work of a growing studio like ours, guided by passion and competence.
News available soon, stay tuned!

I was just about to post this. That is really awesome that Capcom noticed their work and is inviting them to discuss ideas. I for one would like a Resident Evil 3 REmake as well.
It would be interesting if Capcom worked on classic REmake version of Resident Evil 2 while Invader Games continues forth with a RE4 camera style version that is official and overseen by Capcom. It will be interesting to see what happens with all of this.

This is fucking amazing. Other devs take note instead of shutting fans down invite them for their amazing work.
And this is actually smart on their part they could use the assets made from invadergames and update them.

Once the environments are done it won't be too difficult for them to implement the different scenarios. There weren't many unique areas.

Wait ....

Why ?

It was impressive for "fans".

But it'd be absolute monkey shit as a true remake D: .

I don't want any of that in the real remake.....

They are only making it because of the success of REmake HD remaster and because fans wanted it. Anything but a classic RE would not make sense.

It still doesn't need to have pre-rendered backgrounds. In fact, that would be momumentally stupid of them. 3D environments with a fixed-but-dynamic camera (CV-style) is clearly the best option. Pre-rendered backgrounds come with no benefits now that we can do nice real-time visuals, only drawbacks.

I hope RE0 Remastered sells well so Capcom can realize that we need a new Billy Coen game

Billy Coen is so fucking cool. Wasn't there files in the N64 version of RE2 that mentioned Billy? Maybe Billy can make an appearance in RE2make *Loud Squealing*

Agreed, with pre-rendered backgrounds you still have to do every single thing as with 3D backgrounds, and even more. It's just performance saving, not time saving.

I just did this now; overlaid the two floors of the RPD (1st floor in blue, 2nd in green - reference point was the ladder in the main lobby):

Dgju7HN.jpg

They don't match; which is also why every single fanmade map has trouble with the dimensions. As we can see, there's a lot of space to add in the second floor of the police station - I hope Capcom takes full advantage!

I wouldn't say there's any drawbacks. For one, we can have a full 4k resolution without a hitch - they can also pull off parallax for some added depth. I'd love to see a modern game with impressive and artistic pre-rendered backgrounds - everyone knows that pre-rendered is better than real-time. Now imagine a 4k image, with a 10 million polygon character model - that shouldn't be too taxing on current gen. They're essentially flattened images rendered with high fidelity simulations. Considering they still require to create all the assets from scratch, pre-rendering has a faster production schedule due to less optimization - 3D requires more optimization for all the draw-calls, materials, and physics.

When this comes out, and the first thing I see when the game boots up is a modern version of this:

It would be the greatest thing

That and it seemslessly transitioning to an Umbrella water-bottle was amazing.

People who seem to think RE4 "solved" something don't get that before RE:CV, the Resident Evil games were akin to horror themed PC adventure games with minor combat situations thrown in on a console. They weren't boom boom shoot em ups. I can understand how some people may not enjoy the formula, as PC styled adventure games do tend to appeal to a certain audience.

how big was re3 compared to re2?

i know re3 reused a lot of the environments from re2 so would it be possible to throw re3 into the new remake?

That is a common misconception. RE3 only had a portion of the police department. RE3 has plenty of new environments not featured in RE2.

Capcom should stay away from their ideas from what I've seen. I think this is just a PR thing though.

It most certainly is, and it's working, with many people saying how nice of Capcom.
They would just get more bad rep if they sent letters with their lawyer's letterhead.

But it would be delusional to think that they need help from a small, foreign dev who doesn't respect trademarks.

I have to agree with you.

I have to admit I was concerned about the lack of health and inventory screen. The inventory seemed to be taken straight out of Alone in the Dark (2008) version. It seemed like InvaderGames decided to drop the fixed camera/OTS camera switching that was in the Unity build and go for OTS camera only. You can tell from the new level design shown in their latest video with how dark it was and looking for the fuse.

I think Capcom is smart enough to retain the fixed camera a la REmake, but they might be open for a OTS mode for people who prefer RE4-6. They would definitely have to be two different modes though.

This scares me considering how bad their fan made version looked.

Even if it's just PR it's still giving them a once in a lifetime opportunity and I see it as a win win. Invadergames gets to get some professional insight and meet their favorite devs and Capcom gets good PR.

At the very least they might use their assets and polish them up with AAA budget.
