Showtime Close to a Deal to Partner with Xbox Studios on ‘Halo’ Series

Game of Thrones production values, for starters.

I don't think Halo is anywhere near as valuable IP for TV show though. It will require huge budget, but it will have to largely come from Microsoft's own pockets. So it doesn't really matter much where the show airs. And I expect that with Showtime being much smaller they won't insist on having full creative control, the way HBO would.

$3billion + franchise.

God only knows how much money FUD made them. It's in the top 100 list on iTunes, great Bluray/DVD sales and a Netflix debut....

Halo is perfect for TV/Movies.

.

A gaming franchise though. Big difference. GoT was prime for becoming a tv phenomenon. With Halo there's no truly good story to adapt easily. All you have is a setting and a brand name. It will be infinitely harder to create great show out of it. Plus SF hasn't exactly been lighting the TV on fire in last decade.

I just don't see HBO being willing to pump the kind of money into Halo as they do with GOT. Heck, I don't see anyone being able to invest in it without Microsoft covering most of the budget.

I don't know about that. Showtime is known to be pretty finicky. They didn't let the creators of Dexter kill off the character in the finale.

Hmm if this gets on Showtime, then that means theres gonna be a lot of nudity and sex in Halo. Master Chief is definitely going to be getting it on with everything that moves.

Na, this isn't Cinemax. I think we'll get ample amounts of gore though. Unless they go all space opera on this bitch and it's based on the colonies' that hate Earth and all things ONI/UNSC which would be interesting for those of us invested in the books and stuff but boring for others.

I dunno man Homeland had quite a bit of T&A. Also Tudors, the girl who plays Margaery Tyrell was basically a porn star. Also Dexter.

At least you could write situations where it's "acceptable" in those shows. Anything Halo with nudity other than Spartans receiving treatment on operating tables would just be dumb.

I'm sure they'll be able to write something in there. Cant be shooting aliens all the time. Probably something with Cortana.

Halo absolutely has real potential as a television series and likely even more as a full blown movie production. I firmly believed this to be the case ever since reading Fall of Reach, and I feel First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx only helped cement it further. There's also the short story 'The Impossible life and possible death of Preston J. Cole,' which is also quite good.

My best guess as to why people think this series doesn't have a legitimate shot at being a good or even potentially amazing series is maybe they haven't seriously followed the books and are just purely judging the universe based on what they've seen in the games, and I think that's totally the wrong way to go about it. It all comes down to execution, because they surely have the material in my opinion.

What do you mean by that? Halo 4's Cortana was practically nude the whole time :)

I like the idea of TV shows being based on video games but I just don't care enough about the Halo universe for this to interest me. I'll check it out, but I don't expect much.

Yup, I believe Halo has one of the richest universes of any game. People that have only played the games might not know that though. The people who have read the books will know that there is a lot of story in this universe worth experiencing. I'm actually kind of surprised that it took this long to start getting live action Halo stuff but the series definitely deserves more then what we got with Forward Unto Dawn (I did like that movie though but it was kind of a tease).

I think regardless of whether you're a Halo fan or not, it's great to see a new Sci-fi show being made. There's been a serious lack in the last decade or so. Hopefully they pull it off, but if not I appreciate them giving it a go.

Xbox aims to develop “Halo” and other properties as high-end series productions in an effort to enhance the Xbox platform as an entertainment service for its base of 48 million subscribers.

I don't understand this TV angle at all. How does it help enchance the Xbox when I can watch it all without an Xbox?

Well..Xbox is in more countries than Showtime. I also assume that the only place to watch it after premiere (Netflix-like) will be Xbox too.

I think it's pretty funny how the biggest show Microsoft could imagine to sell people on their Xbox programming might be airing on a TV channel first.

Kinda , they have great first seasons but disappointing later seasons. Dexter went bad after the first three season and Homeland became shit ant the end of the first season due to executives interference. Shameless is the only show that is consistently good but only because that show is so unhinged that any storyline ,no matter how ridiculous, fits the show.

As long as Showtime executives don't meddle too much the partnership can be beneficial.

Yeah. Very true. My favorite show on Showtime. A lot of them kinda fizzle out pretty fast and I'm hoping the same doesn't happen to Shameless.

I don't know how I feel about this Halo TV series yet. Still waiting for a lot more detail

That's really weird. One of the flagship titles for their whole Xbox Originals subscription plan will air first on different subscription plan. I'm assuming the deal will prevent Showtime from carrying it on their on demand channel?

This is like watching Microsoft drive their shiny sports car towards a brick wall...and then stepping on the gas. These ancillary perks of the XB1 only would entice someone to buy the console if they already thought the XB1 was equivalent to the PS4 for gaming. Microsoft has to cross that hurdle first before anything else they try will be effective. The best thing Microsoft can do for the XB1 is get more exclusive games.
