I don't think I said anything about this trailer yet, so:

This trailer was the GOAT video game trailer, I don't care what anyone else says.

Also, about Stardust Speedway, does anyone think that each Act will end up being a different time (i.e. Act 1 is Past, Act 2 is Present)?

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to have Stardust Speedway without some sort of race at the end, so I have a feeling Act 2 leads into the future zone we know and love.

I could see that but I would rather they just pretend like CD was an alternate timeline and not feel bound to it. I say that because I want an endless supply of Sonic Mania sequels over the next decade.

Well, Mania 2 could easily fall after CD in terms of chronology, but I understand your alternate timeline preference. I could see a Mania sequel "demaking" levels from the 3D Sonics into 16-bit zones! Imagine something like Crazy Gadget!

Lol, I certainly hope so!

oh my god pls i need this

I'm sure there's like at least two or three fangames that deliver exactly this, I may have to look it up later.

Man, the Gamexplain analysis for this is pretty bad.

They seem to think that we haven't seen the badniks in Mirage Saloon before even though there have been several full playthroughs of Act 2 since last October.

For reference:
Okay, badniks time!

AjJmiCO.jpg

Here we have a donkey with a bumper for a saddle. I would call this guy Burrobot, but that's a Sonic 1 enemy ;P. It rolls around and if it sees you it revs up and tries to charge you like the Rhinobots from Sonic 3 and the bumper reminds me of Crawl from Casino Night Zone.

YZPg5VY.jpg

This new hawk/buzzard badnik perches atop cacti and other level elements and then swoops down when you get near. If you are near the ground it will hug the contours of the ground like Penguinator.

SUXB12X.jpg

Caterkiller. It's a recolored Caterkiller from Sonic 1. This version wraps around poles and then lunges at you like Crawlton from Mystic Cave Zone.

Roller. A recolored Roller from Sonic 1. This armadillo has gotten a mighty upgrade. He will chase you like crazy until you hit him.

They forget that Sonic CD had a time travel mechanic and think Stardust Speedway's vine theme is all-new (not just the new plants).

4HQbkrG.jpg

They point out this badnik and go on about how it's a total mystery what it could be. Or you could google...

qFutnTsl.jpg

fPC2XYy.jpg

Then they point out this mysterious speed booster that's unlike one's we've seen before and ejects a shell casing when Sonic runs through it... just like it did in Sonic CD...
QKORBfN.png

They also point out the harps decorating the level, which were in the original level as well.

1AgXO9q.jpg

These vines don't flip you, but nice catch

AWwk97K.jpg

They say Eggman is clearly piloting this vehicle but it's clearly an Eggrobo...

And that donkey better be called burrobot!

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I've seriously watched this trailer 20 times today. The music is soooooo good. And the beats are timed perfectly with the visuals - I mean, it's exact.

In 90 seconds, I can see more love and passion put into this one trailer than most entire games as a whole. It just oozes an understanding of the brand.

I'm not a big Sonic fan at all - honestly, I couldn't really care less about the franchise. But I DO care about the industry, and to see this much adoration for the mascot put into a game is really fantastic. I'll be there Day One.

I watched this trailer at least five time today. :lol

The artstyle is sooo perfect for Sonic, can't believe Sega never came back to it after CD.

It feels like Capcom releasing a new 2D Mega Man game with cutscenes à la Mega Man 8/X4. Such a feelgood comeback to source.

That trailer left me with a whirlwind of emotions, but the elevator ending where it showed:

M
K
3
2
1

Has me mixed - this is the only title in that progression that isn't 100% original content. I mean, if the game is great and includes enough gameplay to get to Hyper Sonic, then sure, but otherwise they're being a bit presumptive.

Yeah that GameXplain analysis had me like "cmon guys, you didn't play Sonic CD enough? Fair enough....most don't remember it to well anyway"

Really that's just showing the next classic sonic type game since S3&K, not so much as "progression".

I dislike Sonic CD and I've only played it twice but, I mean, 1 minute on google is all it takes...

"Stardust Speedway" "Stardust Speedway enemies"

I didn't remember what the hell a kabasira was.

Man, everything about the marketing for Mania so far has been fantastic.

(Though I kind of laughed at "the return of 2D Sonic" when all modern Sonic games frigging refuse to stop making half the games 2D.)

Sad this got delayed so far from "spring", but still excited. I've been debating whether to preorder that SE with the giant statue for months, lol.

Oh, that's kinda unfortunate. I was going to watch it later, but I guess I'll skip it.

Now I have to ask: how bad are their other Sonic analysis videos? I don't really watch them all, so I hadn't realized they could ever get this much wrong in one video.

The game that will officially start my thirties is pretty much a love letter to the very first video game I ever played...

I havent kept up on news about this game. With that said, how many levels are we thinking this game will have?

"More than Generations", so, ten at bare minimum. We already know:

- Green Hill
- Studiopolis
- Stardust Speedway
- Mirage Saloon
- Flying Battery
- Unknown cathedral level

Im glad they picked the only good zone from Sonic CD.

Except now it will have even better level design.

Ok Palmtree Panic is not bad.

Thanks! I can't remember. How many stages did Sonic 3 & Knuckles have? Altogether? Maybe im being irrational here, but I think this game should have just as many.

Counting Hidden Palace and Doomsday, S3&K had 14, but bear in mind HPZ, Sky Sanctuary, and Doomsday were all one act long (and Doomsday is really more like an extended Death Egg boss fight).

Now that Sonic and Mega Man went back to retro, we need to see other IPs do the same. Ghost & Goblins, Ninja Gaiden, Splatter House, Golden Axe, Tomb Raider, Gauntlet.

Game looks so good. Hope the level design is good. That's my only concern

Given that it appears they've completely gotten rid of bottomless pits (sans Flying Battery Zone), I'd imagine the quality of life given from the stages are only going to go up from what Sonic 2 and 3K's level design offered.

That looks like Tyson Hesse's art, the dude who did Boxer Hockey before and moved onto the Sonic Retro comic a while back. If they got him to do animated cutscenes, this game is perfect!

This is the first time I'm watching Sonic Mania footage. Why doesn't the art style look crisp and clean?

the footage used in this trailer is half-framerate and pretty roughly compressed. here's some cleaner footage:
