It can work like that. It has before (I think it was Sony and Nintendo back in the day if I remember right). Not saying that's true here, but possible. It doesn’t work like this.

Was meant to be 500 and they dropped it to 499. There. Done.
449/499 is my bet
Holy shit, someone who isn't dreaming and speaks sense. Anyone thinking a PS5 will launch at $399 is beyond deluded. That SSD is going to screw them over good on pricing because they went for such a cutting edge version. Also, no a discdrive isn't going to knock $100 off the top either, $50 at best.i cant see $399 unless they are willing to take utterly massive losses, which they are in no position to even need to.
if the xsx is taking a loss at $499 and the ps5 has a cutting edge proprietary SSD and a super hot gpu that requires special cooling, then i seriously doubt the PS5 cost less than a xsx to build. in fact it probably cost more despite the xsx having the costlier GPU.
its clear Sony got caught off guard by the 12 tflops and redesigned the ps5 to have variable clocks just so they could close the gap on paper. this cost them a fortune and the price will reflect it
For people that want to, or already have, gone full digital.$50 difference?
What is the point with having two models then?
says you that doesn't knowIt doesn’t work like this.

With the amount of bulk buying Sony will do for something like this, they probably get the drives for like $20 or something stupid like that. Why would the difference be $100?.
You have to consider the increase in their take from digital sales and cutting out used game sales and lending of games. They can take a hit of anything less than 100, especially on the digital. For people that want to, or already have, gone full digital.

It's okay for them to take a big loss on the digital edition since they will be able to quickly make back the money as they will be the sole source for game purchasing and they make a lot more money from a game sold on PSN than a physical copy from a store. They would likely be taking a massive loss at $399
Well the disk version is fugly, so if you are a digital only consumer already, you get the marginally better looking console and save $50.$50 difference?
What is the point with having two models then?
Agreed price has been know internally for months, things don't change overnight, advertisement etc has to be ready in advance, i dare say both MS and Sony have known what each other have been doing price wise for months too. No blindsiding, just MS was ready to announce and Sony arent quite ready yet, probably deciding what games are definitely ready for launch, they don't want another DriveClub debacle! They will hit 399 for digital, not because it won't sell out for months at a higher price but because it will give the platform cannonball momentum for the next few years.
GameReactor is nordic region and I'm guessing this is from Tidux. I wouldn't put too much faith in the overall rumor.
New Socom game will be a Call of Duty and Halo killer(tm). Coming at launch btw.
They will never be able to replicate what Xbox has done in that vein...According to my sources Sony are going to pay me to take their console.
And I'll still decline it.
Surely they were never thinking about 599 anyways...
I say the only option is to release the digital version at $199, this way even if I don't work I'll at least be able to buy it!
True, I’m no Gamereactor employeesays you that doesn't know
"Anonymous source" = "Write anything you like"
Exactly, they likely submitted multiple budgets to Japan and they were waiting to see which one to go with, ms announcement will now make it easier fir them to pick the best one if they have not already done so.Business decisions of this scale doesn't work like this. If Sony was flexible with pricing, then they would've had all the different scenarios mapped out already. This article makes it seem like Xbox's pricing caught them by surprise and now Sony is scrambling for plan B. Sony likely already had plan B, C, D, etc ready to go depending on what MS does.
No way digital PS5 is 399.
