I have kind of a simple Splatoon question, but on cursory research I'm having trouble getting a clear answer..
Can you join up with your friends and get matched against other people via matchmaking? Is that even a thing?

You can join in with your friends by jumping into their current game. That said you won't be able to actually specifically group with your friends until the major August update.
So basically if you have a group of four or so people who want to play together they have to join into whatever game you (or any other friend) are currently playing. In Turf War the teams are randomized after every round. In the August update one matchmaking mode will allow you to band a team of four friends to play against another team of four friends, as well as a mode that allows you to just play 8 friends together with custom rules.
So we have a team based shooter where you can't team up with your friends? Is that correct?
If that's true, Nintendo may need to lose their mantle as being a developer who releases finished games.
1. If everyone select rollers, there will be no one shooting anything, and kills doesn't count in the score, and there are no deathmatches. So is it a "shooter"?
2. Based on the Testfire Demo experience, I'd say that the Turf War mode (at least) is as single-playerish as you can have a team-based game. Your own team are your allies but they are also your enemies in the battle towards the highest score.
3. Nintendo has clearly stated that they will continue to support the title post-release, so you're correct that the game isn't "finished". The single-player part of the game seems "finished" however, since all additions mentioned will be added to the multiplayer.
So it's not a "shooter" because one of the weapons doesn't shoot? Okay. Whatever you want to call it, it was pitched for its mutliplayer team vs. team gameplay, and when it comes out I can't play with friends on my team unless by random. I don't like that.

By this logic Nintendo already lost this mantle when the released Smash 4 without share mode. I'm pretty sure they've released games with promised mode updates before that, but I'm blanking on examples.
Being unable to play together with your friend in an MP focused game seems like a pretty enormous omission to me.
You are able to play with your friend. What you're not able to do is explicitly matchmake a group of friends against other friends (in other words, Clan/Squad battles).
Someone just said you can join up with a friend but it randomizes teams so you may or may not be on their team.

Or don't buy the game at all.If it bothers you that much don't buy it until August.
It is not only one weapon though, there are other non-shooting weapons in SplatoonSo it's not a "shooter" because one of the weapons doesn't shoot?
The game allows you to play with or against your friends. It doesn't let you choose when you do what, though, and that is so by design (at this stage in time, anyway). Yeah, I know it can boggle some people's minds. So we have a team based shooter where you can't team up with your friends? Is that correct?

We’ve just received a new research image.
I’m all for new squid pics, but what’s the deal with the number?

This building here is the Battle Dojo. In the Battle Dojo, two players can face off in a 1 vs. 1 battle using a Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller! The rules are different from those in online battles, but it’s a great place to practice your skills. Or so we’re told.

The goal of Battle Dojo is to pop more balloons than your opponent before time runs out. Balloons will appear at set locations in each stage as the match progresses. Players can see the location of the upcoming balloons before they appear though, so expect a fight if you get there early!

Was hoping they would do English updates on these:
Pop one balloon in Battle Dojo to earn a point. But watch out—evidence suggests that you can lose a ton of points if you get splatted by your opponent. This can be splatastrophic…unless you’re the one doing the splatting, of course. In the final minute, each balloon is worth two points, so keep on poppin’ until the battle is over!

http://splatoon.nintendo.com/amiibo/I wish we could see the gear each amiibo unlocks for both genders.
I mean, GameXplain only posted a video about the Ink-Boy samurai armor on the inkling girl.
My pre-order/purchase will greatly depend on that, and it seems that everyone is quiet about it (reviewers, and Nintendo).
The samurai outfit is the same for both girl and boy and someone posted a picture of the school outfit for the boy in the spoiler thread (sadly it isn't the same outfit as the girl one).I wish we could see the gear each amiibo unlocks for both genders.

Edit: Too late.
why does it suck? a boy wearing a skirt is that amusing? why can't we just enjoy the game without the gender statementsIt really sucks that the school outfit isn't the same for everyone.

Nice infographic by Nintendo to find out if you're squid material.
on the other hand
why does it hurt
why can't we enjoy the game and also have this thingy also
you know what I'm black so I guess I would have issue if I could not change skin color for inklingsIt's... not really about being amusing but not allowing the boy to wear that kind of outfit kind of is a gender statement by itself.
Not that I'm that bothered by it because it's clear that the outfits are supposed to mirror Japanese school outfits. That said it is a bit of a bummer it doesnt work, nothing would have been lost from it and it would be neat.
Kind of a "darn, that's a shame" situation.
Stuff
Not sure what being gay has to do with this. If you really think the two are linked you should really educate yourself.
Yes, asking for clothing that's already in the game to be wearable by both male and female characters is the same as asking for a tank or roller blades.
No one said the game sucks, I said that particular thing sucks.
you cannot educate anyone about their ignorance on your views of what should be by just quoting stuff try to read my words first and ask questions
I asked why it sucks
?
You did nothing to educate me on that
Male 'school girl' outfit looks great. He even wears the hair clip as a hair tie. He doesn't need to wear the skirt for it to look good.
Also, I find it interesting that the male version of the Octoling suit sports a longer undershirt.
Doesn't keep it from looking feminine... lol.
