Switch hacked through old webkit exploit

I guess they also didn't make Netflix or Youtube available because of those nasty hackers. What about the virtual console?

Nintendo doesn't make Netflix and Hulu available. Sarcasm falls flat when your premise is wrong.

They're clearly anticipating the possibility: there's a "viewing media content" option under sleep mode.

They already made it pretty clear there's no Virtual Console as such coming to Switch. C'mon with the same uniformed gripes already it's getting tired.

LMAO, looks like removal of consumer-friendly features has sure worked out for Nintendo.

Removing user general web browser access, making game carts read-only, making save games locked to internal memory and impossible to transfer, not having any apps. And then they use an old-ass build of Webkit with known exploits anyways. This is such classic Nintendo.

Switch works on some android fork?

I've seen some people say it's FreeBSD, if so depending on how old their kernel is, there might be some nice kernel exploits available for hackers.

I would be very willing to bet almost all of these missing features (save read-only carts, which isn't really a meaningful problem) are because the console was rushed to launch, and not an intentional decision. The Switch didn't even have this shit, unoptimized build of WebKit prior to the launch update.

Wasn't the Vita hacked on the first day through the PSP emulator?

That only gave access to the PSP emulator though. There have been various hacks which allow PSP games to run over the years, but the Vita didn't get a true kernel exploit which allowed playing of Vita games until just last year.

No. The PSP emulator might have been, but not the Vita itself. The Vita is one of the most secure gaming system ever according to Yifan (one of the Vita hackers). Sony was even confident enough to let people run their own code through the PS Mobile program on Vita, and that didnt really lead to much on itself.

But right now this is effectively the same degree. The PSP hack was a vector that simply went nowhere but it was a vulnerability. Right now the webkit is sandboxed and its permissions are low, so it would take a very different, very major exploit to get anything out of this other than basic webkit shenanigans which won't go anywhere because as noted it's got very little breathing room on the system.

The Switch itself is not currently any more hacked than the Vita was when the PSP emulator got turned into a Hello World script runner on day 1.

Yes, which is no different from the Switch. Theres no kernel access and as of right now there's going to need to be some other major exploit to get there.

this new samsung toaster i bought is so consumer unfriendly it can't stream netflix

Actually doing some further reading on other forums, sounds like the webkit is indeed sandboxed and has other security on top of very tightly defined and restricted permissions profile.

So I'd hazard a guess Nintendo expected this and layered barriers to keep it as abstracted as possible.
This is a good sign. If their apps are all running in tight sandboxes, that bodes well.

Sad thing for Sony was they nuked themselves with the proprietary memory cards. Not much point in clapping at your OS team for a pretty damn secure system when your marketing and R&D teams send out the hardware to die with lolprice memory cards.

Slightly OT, but at least Nintendo have used standard memory cards for a while.

It'll be interesting now with the age of Nintendo Accounts. I feel that the biggest deterrent with "jailbreaking" PS4 and XBoxOnes are account bans/console bans.

Great, I really hope this doesn't pan out. Just what we need, yet another device to play roms on at the expense of system integrity. Hack free online gaming please. Don't jailbreak the Switch.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
I mean the link in the op doesn't have the exploit toolkit code info that you can download if you wish. Did you even read.
The news over the info in the OP is that now anybody can get the same level of access as the guy from OP. Nothing has changed in the level of access per se. Which, to clarify, is executing user code in an unprivileged process.

Welp, a few games have been dumped .. important part " they are unencrypted" Word is software was used thru an exploit to dump the games to an sd card.

They are not playable however moding games would be possible.. among the dumped games: BOTW

Let the cat and mouse games begin.

Eh. The mouse can lock down the house and find flaws in the walls, and the cat can proceed forward until the day where the mouse breaks down the wall and other mice start streaming in the house and then some mice can stay in a nice locked down house but the daring mice will leave the house open and then the cat will start to hunt those mice.
