Hopefully they include Bill Paxton in the memoriam segment.

Hmm, bit early with news only hitting today.

He deserves his own memoriam for sure but still feels very, very raw and out of respect for the family don't think they should

Bet he will get rightly a mention from at least someone who wins or at least presents an award and probably a standing ovation when they do.

I find it very irksome that Hacksaw Ridge gets a directing nom but Silence is nowhere to be seen.

Of the two films about Andrew Garfield's faith being tested, one of them is a mawkish lifetime drama interspliced with some very well realised war scenes, whilst the other is Scorsese's finest film in almost two decades.

Because she is so completely unremarkable in the movie. There is nothing about her performance that stands out compared to the other nominees, her past work, and especially people who have won that award before.

It is a bandwagon Oscar for the best picture winner, which also doesn't deserve it.

I thought Emma Stone was great in La La Land.

Moonlight should take the Best Picture imo. Guess we'll find out soon enough

You said it first, my thoughts exactly.

Bro, this is the Oscars. They're always bandwagon Oscars.

She was excellent, as was the movie.

You're gonna have a rough night, La La Land is gonna clean up.

I agree with most of these. Though I'm going with Casey for actor. And Moonlight deserves more wins/recognition, but it's going to be hard to win many categories. Ali for supporting actor would be nice.

Edit: nvm, Davis was supporting actress...Portman could "upset" for actress.

No, it's not. If she gave that same performance in a random romantic comedy and hit all the same acting beats and range of emotion, we wouldn't be discussing it at all.

Reese Witherspoon should have won Best Actress for Just Like Heaven.

im punching my wall right now still pissed off about amy adams not being nominated for anything

Seriously, I can't believe she didn't get a nomination for her sound mixing work.

Ok why is dev patel nominated for best supporting actor? this feels bullshit to me, both for his garbage performance and the fact he was more of a lead than anything else

Will Denzel be sober enough to accept his award? Tune in tonight!

Another reason I'm pissed about Emma winning.

Adams is amazing in Arrival but because the film has aliens, she's not nominated. She carries the emotional weight of that film on her shoulders. Everything about Adams' role just slaughters the competition, and they couldn't be asked to put her up there.

She really deserved a best actress nom for Arrival. She was also really good in Nocturnal Animals. Adams is prob my favorite actress atm.

Guessing tonight will be even an even more predictable Oscars than normal but still looking forward to it, doubt La La Land will hit the record but it'll be damn close.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if Viggo wins best actor, but it's a strong lineup. Ali is the right choice for supporting actor. La La Land will sweep what it can.

Ali is the safe choice to win. I decided to gamble and guess that Patel's BAFTA win portends an upset victory in the category; I'd call Supporting Actor the category where I'm most likely to be wrong.

Portman isn't even going to the Oscars, which tells you how much chance she thinks she has. She hasn't won any of the major precursor awards.

Ok why is dev patel nominated for best supporting actor? this feels bullshit to me, both for his garbage performance and the fact he was more of a lead than anything else
The justification put forward by the campaign is that he's supporting because he's only in half the film.

I'd love it for Moonlight to sweep, but I can see LLL doing that instead.

My real focus is on the documentary genre. That's going to be an interesting one.

Some actors do this for better win potential. It's not often you see it for film, but on the television side it's regular. Lead actor is always a hell of a fight, but in supporting, you can have a better chance.

These are my predictions:

Picture: La La Land
Actor: Casey
Actress: Emma
Supporting Actor: Mahershayla Ali
Supporting Actress: Viola
Director: Damien Chazelle

And La La Land will win every other category it's nominated in.

If Gosling somehow wins I'm going to hammer a bullet into my throat while singing Real Human Being.
