The best PS4 hard drive (IGN)

clearly you're joking ;)
but that standard storage space i a complete joke anyway.
with every game NEEDED to be installed.

so yeah that one is nice.
still 1 tb is also useless
i need about 5 to no care .

if every loading screen of every game you play was reduced by 1 second it would add up quick.

1TB is working for me so far. I've downloaded most of my digital games and its looking like i'll be able to install all my disc games. I have about 15 disc games.

I don't mind cleaning out the fridge from time to time, the biggest thing is I wanted to be able to install Battlefield 4 + expansions without chewing up half the hard drive.

*at the time of the hdd flood so manufacturers were trying to ramp up output.
*also buying cheapest hdd they can get their hands on
*no mythology shown

Fuck! And I was planning to pick up a Seagate to upgrade my PS4, feels like I dodged a bullet.

Except the fact that outside of the 1.5tb listing none of the other HDD sizes in those failure rates apply to 2.5in laptop hdds, case in point the biggest failure contributor on that list is 3TB but there is no such thing as a 2.5 inch 3TB HDD, the highest current capacity size for laptop drives is 2TB, so that data infographic is likely reference enterprise level usage on 3.5in desktop sized HDDs.

You can't make make a blanket statement in reference to HDD failure rates without proper context. Case in point laptop HDDs are designed to run cooler and quieter than their bigger 3.5 desktop variants, and cooler operating temperatures generally goes back into reliability and longevity.

Of course a certain level of failure is to be expected even on the most reliable of devices, but when the sample size you take for HDD failure rates has listings for drives that don't even exist in the laptop market space, it skews the results a great deal and becomes misinformation.

Edit: Case in point....do you now see how misinformation can be a bad thing. NightShift thinks he's dodging a bullet based on information without it's proper context.

Are they sure on those SSHD times? Mine seems pretty damn fast compared to others, and I remember some Bloodborne comparisons that put it a good deal ahead of mechanical, and just behind a pure SSD.

Once the sshd learns what the more commonly used files are, it speeds up a ton.

what's the largest currently available? 3tb? and can anyone link me to it?

The current largest is 2TB. I even said that 3TB drives don't yet exist in the 2.5in HDD market space.

This one way to get the current largest 2TB capacity drive for the PS4 that fits within it's 9.5mm standard for its drive cage.

You have several options. Buying a drive that's within an enclosure and reusing the stock 500GB on the PS4 as removable storage.

The Samsung Spinpoint M9T / Momentus SpinPoint ST2000LM003

This drive is 2TB, is 9.5mm in height (max height for the PS4 drive cage currently), and various options of buying this particular drive all fall within relatively the same price.

However oddly you are more likely to save money buying a drive that comes inside an enclosure sold as a usb portable, rather than the bare drive itself.

What's all this talk about storage space? How many games do you guys play simultaneously anyway? Just delete them when you're done. You can always reinstall them later.

Pfft. We may as well go back to the Stone Age when you had to get off your butt to put in, or take out, a disk.

I'm fine with my hybrid 1tb Seagate drive which was highly recommended by many here. I feel it is the best value out there. Personally, I trust the numerous testers of this forum over IGN.

The PS4 uses a Sata II controller for it's HDD so it really won't take advantage of SATA 6Gb/s it's basically limited in that regard. So SSD's will be limited as well due to the limited speed that Sata II has.

Of course going from the stock 500GB to a 1TB is a modest upgrade and since every PS4 game installs entirely to the HDD, capacity might more important speed.

I recommend the Samsung Spinpoint M9T. It is a 9.5mm 2TB HDD that works in the PS4. It is the current largest capacity 9.5mm drive available. The PS4 drive cage itself doesn't support drives larger than 9.5mm so this is your best bet in terms of reasonable pricing and storage capacity.

You can either buy the bare drive itself which costs more
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MI19WXK/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Or you can buy this and remove the HDD from it's enclosure - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTSK4/?tag=neogaf0e-20 and get the exact same thing for less

Also if you are careful enough, You can preserve the enclosure for the Slim Backup Plus and reuse the default 500GB PS4 drive as removable storage.

The Spinpoint M9T is $80 so it's $20 more then that Hitachi drive, but again it's also twice the capacity.

This is very helpful. Thank you!

I have the Samsung Spinpoint M9T 2TB drive, and it's awesome having my entire PS4 library installed. I'm unfortunately at less than 500GB of space though.

I haven't noticed any problems with it. I get errors where games crash, but I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid and attributing it to the HDD as I don't have the error logs from before I installed the HDD to compare. I also don't know how frequently other people get these errors. Happens very infrequently though.

It's time for Sony to allow external HDs like even Nintendo allows.

I have that drive. Thankfully I use headphones when I game, because that thing is loud. Not typical for a HD I've ever used, but every 15 seconds or so it makes an audible beeping sound. It's weird. Seems fast enough though.

Holy shit, that's what that noise is!? I've been hearing the chirp every so often and couldn't figure out what it was.

Sup everyone!! I was wondering... if I wanted to upgrade my hard drive to a 1TB or 2TB (on my PS4), but still want to somehow "transfer" my P.T. on the new hard drive, what would be the safest and most used technique to do it?

I'm in the same boat and will be upgrading my HDD in a few days.

During the PT removal from PSN iirc, many posters on Gaf said a regular PS4 HDD backup to an external before you put in your new drive would preserve your PT file.

ok thanks. I don't plan on upgrading yet but I'll remember this for when I actually do. I feel like Ben 2TB would get filled up too quickly, so I'll wait for a 3TB one. Any word on when such a hd will be released?

A 3TB drive at 9.5mm. I don't think one will happen any time soon.

Now if the PS4 had a larger drive cage this wouldn't be an issue.

Toshiba just recently introduced a 2.5 inch 3TB laptop HDD, however it's 15mm in height, larger than the maximum height of 9.5mm the PS4 uses.

There ARE unusual workarounds, however this requires modifying the actual plastic shell of the PS4 itself and using a SATA extender cable on an externally powered drive to use larger capacity 3.5in drives, but like all things this would naturally void the warranty of the console. So for now the current largest capacity the PS4 will support is 2TB without physically altering the console in some way.

Is there a way to keep my patches when I uninstall a game?

Unfortunately, No because patches are merged into the game install itself. The reason for this is because some patches actually replace some files in the install and overwrite them.

I'd warn against the popular Seagate 2TB, unless I'm just crazy... see the video below. ever since I installed it, I'm noticing what I think is much slower texture loading in Witcher 3, for example. Not to mention the occasional beep.

But if the Witcher 3 always has this amount of pop-in, I'd gladly admit to being wrong. I'd rather not have to reinstall the stock HDD.

Minor spoiler due to mission title in HUD, btw (this is in Kaer Morhen, last third of the game)

Sorry to necro this thread but I'm having trouble with a new 2TB HDD put in my PS4.

I'm at the stage where I need to reinstall the ps4 system software via USB in safe mode but I keep getting an error that firmware 2.57 isnt being recognised.

I've looked around online and some users say to download a larger than usual 800MB file for this situation but I can't find it anywhere on Sony support sites. Anybody able to help?

I hear the external hard drives are better to buy because they are cheaper and do the same job. All you have to do is remove the covering and install like an internal drive.

anyone done this?

Thanks for this tip. Christmas present for myself to upgrade from 750GB. 59.99 on Amazon UK for the portable, 78.60 for the standalone. No brainer!

My 750GB is a SSHD (hybrid), but I really need more space. I'll just put the 750GB into my PS3.

My Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB annoyingly squeaks loudly and frequently. I'm considering buying a different drive just to get rid of the issue.

Not what I like to read just after buying one lol. Hopefully for me, and sadly for you, it's just a bad drive you have.

Well if it helps, I have been running the same drive for about 4 months now and it is quiet.

Initially I thought my old 1TB Hybrid HDD was making noises, but it turned out it was the fan in the ps4, making a noise similar to HDD clicking and spinning. I took my ps4 apart and gave it a good clean and everything is great again.

Having a 2TB HDD is fantastic, should keep me going for another 2 years until I need more space.

Mine squeak sometimes (I would say once per 4h). I don't really like it and afraid to loose stuff (Thx ps plus backup save), but for the price and the storage I can deal with it.

Got the drive since a year and a half.

I keep hearing people complain about name changes, etc. for the PS4.

They need to add the ability to plug in an external hard drive to install games to.

I've been using this drive for about six months now and it really is fantastic. Funny enough, I always recommend this drive in every "I need a new PS4 HDD" thread and I'm completely ignored every time, but then IGN posts it and urrybody interested.
Yeah I'm jelly.

Quick question, when I'm backing up the PS4 hard drive to an external does the external need to be formatted/empty to store the PS4 backup? Or just have enough space?

I only have one external which can be used to backup my PS4 750GB drive tomorrow to be replaced by 2TB. I'd rather not have to wipe the drive to do a backup.

My Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB used to beep once every day or two. Did it for a month or so. But then either a PS4 firmware update or something else made it stop, and now it hasn't made a sound for over half a year.

Backing up and restoring takes ages! 5 hours to backup, and now I'm restoring with 5 hours left.

Thankfully nowhere near as bad on PS3. Took me over 24 hours to backup on it once. Shocking.

Investing in a 1TB drive for anybody but a light gamer seems like a terrible idea. Doesn't seem worth the time, cost, and effort for less than 2TB.

I own the same one and it makes all those same sounds. Or should I say it made all the same sounds. I recently upgraded to a newer model PS4 and stuck the same 2 TB drive in it and the sounds it used to make are now gone.
