Nintendo could sue Microsoft for assisting in ip theft. Even if the program itself does not infringe on ip if the only possible use of it is infringing then it is illegal.

Yeah. Exactly the same way that Nintendo sues PC emulators developers.

I'm downloading VS2013 Update 2 RC at the moment... not expecting to see XBox as a target in there but hell I'll be excited if it is...

Yeah, I think it makes Xbox hugely more accessible for app developers. It may seem like a pedantic point but I just think that the distinction between 'RT/Metro apps' and 'RT/Metro apps that devs tool for x-plat' could be an important one in terms of relative app availability from an end users' perspective. I expect there'll be many such apps over time, but it won't be 1:1 with RT/Metro.

Of course. In fact, for most apps, they won't make sense to be available on the Xbox. It is better, in my opinion, to have devs specifically design a UI for a specific platform. Both due to input methods and screen size.

I'll be honest guys, I barely ever use the start menu. A large part of the reason why I didn't like Metro is because it was a mandatory-usage replacement for the start menu, when I'd rather just use the applications I'd already put on my desktop and pinned to my navigation bar.

If its on windows 8...it has passed their checks...so there is no reason it can't be on xbox

Indeed.

I really hope we see a lot of emulators and stuff like XBMC on Xbox One. It would definitely drive hardware sales.

Could be awesome, could be a non-issue if Microsoft keeps hiding shit behind Gold. There is going to have to be some management on applications that work on the Xbox One, because how will Microsoft handle the differences between Windows Netflix (which doesn't require an extra sub on any of the devices it is currently on) and the Xbox Netflix which is stuck behind Gold?

Rom sites regularly get cease and desist letters. The programs themselves aren't illegal it is the roms that are required to use them. If someone developed an Xbox One approved emulator the only way to use it would be to illegally download roms. Nintendo would take action immediately and it would go before the courts.

That's actually kind of the point. Having an entire new screen is very much unnecessary. A popup makes more sense because it's smaller and quicker to get to what you want. Metro you have an entire screen to look at so your eyes have to move more, and you get pulled momentarily from your work. A popup like the start menu is much more friendly to that.

They don't give a fuck what happens on platforms they don't control. But Nintendo's platforms don't allow third party emulation software. Neither do Sony's. Both Apple and Google remove emulators from their respective App Stores. To expect MS to allow that is folly of the highest order.

Off topic, but I'm sure this will please some people:

a cleaned off turd is still a turd....why don't they just get rid of that extra metro garbage?

I really wish that every time we have these types of discussions that the usual folks would kindly refrain from bitching and bleating endlessly about the MS paywall.

Get the fuck over it. It's a huge money earner for them and they will never drop it.

Legal action against who. Certainly not MS. They aren't infringing anything.

Why wouldn't someone just pick up an Ouya type console that costs $99 compared to $500 xbone? It can play pretty much all android apps which has a ton more apps and touch interface compatibility. Or is this just a plus for only those that already own an xbone?

This does more for it as a all in one media box than the cable TV integration ever did from my point of view.

Seconded.

Although A combination of Xbox one with cable passthrough, watching live TV and being able to instantly launch Netflix or plex or VLC with your voice, or jump to a game, is pretty damn compelling to me. Technically it is only a small change from what they have now, but that opening up of apps onto a TV connected platform is great.

This makes me really think apple have to open appleTV up to the App Store too.

Does this mean I can play those bootlegged/fake Pokemon games on the windows phone store?

On a side note, I hope this means other apps like Spotify music will be brought over... (Even though this most likely won't happen as there is Xbox music already)

Against the app developers. Look lets be honest for the most part Nintendo doesn't care about a lot of these since they are abundant on the PC and Mobile but if one of their competitors suddenly allowed one to be released a shitstorm would occur. Look into the case of Bleem they were sued and ultimately went under due to the costs associated. However they were deemed legal because their emulator used the original discs. There is no way for an snes emulator to be legal unless it restricts the roms to licensed or freeware games and lockdown the user from using their own.

There are people who SALE emulator for profit in the Google play store and Nintendo can't do shit about it, why? Because emulation isn't illegal. If they were including games or bios, that would be a problem but many emulator get around that by forcing you to provide your own. Some emulators don't even need bios.

(Honest question)
Wouldn't this be the same as digital movies/music, you could easily rip your own copies, and therefore not be pirating.

Who are they to say that I don't play ripped ROM's, is there a commercial way to do that?

Its a plus and a possible feature that someone already looking at possibly getting an XBone might want. The more stuff the better in my opinion. Games will be there of course, I want to know what else my box can do in addition to that. This is a great addition for me particularly and have been really looking forward to them confirming what we had heard in rumors.

This is definitely a can of worms, does this mean we will get porn apps in Xbox One as well, does Microsoft block those??

Microsoft probably wont want the Xbox to be a Porn machine for Teen cod players.

Office achievements, kinda excited...not really, but cool. Hopefully this helps both Xbox sales and Window Store to get more people developing for it.

No one buys the system for mobile games.

They already have apps like that on the Xbox One as dedicated Xbox One apps. You can block them so your kids can't use them.

Not to mention Internet Explorer...

Google removes emulators from the Google Play Store when they find them bro

Windows Store ts & cs are a bit ambiguous in this area:

3.9 All app logic must originate from, and reside in, your app package

Your app must not attempt to change or extend the packaged content through any form of dynamic inclusion of code or data that changes how the application interacts with the Windows Runtime, or behaves with regard to Store policy. It is not permissible, for example, to download a remote script and subsequently execute that script in the local context of your app package.

I am NOT an expert nor am I talking in any official capacity here but you could see how that could be used to pull an emulator app.

The MS store doesn't allow 18+ app(this might have changed though), they don't have any rules about legal emulators though.

I'm trying to stay sceptical on this because I know Microsoft could easily ruin any hopes I have for it, but it's really difficult not to see this as a huge deal.

Just had a look through the store on my windows 8 laptop - probably the second time i've ever opened it - and first thing I see is the mobile port of GTA San Andreas, which is fantastic.

Microsoft, do not screw this up. Get it right and i'll get an xbox one, simple as that.

Couldn't this be huge for indie games? And also, couldn't it be shots fired vs steam? Develop an indie game via unity and it almost immediately works for Xbox/Phone/Tablet/PC. Huge, no?
