XSEED releasing Brandish: The Dark Revenant on January 13

Sweet! I got a 64GB memory card coming in the mail soon, and I was looking for some cheap games to fill it up!

My only problem with XSEED is that they publish so much stuff that I like, any time something comes out I just go "That's fantastic, now when's that other stuff releasing?"

It's kinda like if you had a chat with your favorite band, and they just released a new album that you love, and all you want to ask is "When do you think the next album will come out?"

Also, thanks for making this happen, Tom!

Because SCEA acknowledges the PSP exists, unlike the Vita?

Heh. This will barely be a blip in that memory card, as our master build is only 250 MB, and the PSN download will likely be even smaller due to compression.

...Yet the game still manages to be at least 20 hours long (my first playthrough was 35, including Dela Mode). Falcom crammed a whole lot of content into a very small space!

First time hearing this, would be great if they ever enable it.

I guess I want to try Tom's labor of love now.

I'm talking about an emulator, PPSSPP. Legally (depending on where you live, anyway), it's possible to use a CFW-enabled PSP to extract a plain PPSSPP-compatible ISO from your legitimate PSN purchase of a game and then play it on one of the platforms PPSSPP supports (PC, Android, etc.).

I'll actually be playing on a PSP Go. Prefer it over playing in Vita.

Same here. Vita's resoultion makes PSp games look awful. Plus, I'm having memory problems on Vita despite I have a 64 gig card. My PSP Go still has great amount of free space. Not to mention it's much more portable than vita.

I actually found that every PSP game I have on Vita looks pretty good. Many of them scale very nicely. They look better than on the PSP, especially the PSP-3000.

I assume it would be best to play on PSP.

While working on the game, I played it on PSP, on Vita, on my TV via PSP TV-out, and on my TV via PSTV.

I'd rank them as follows:

1) TV via PSP TV-out
- Does only display in the middle of the screen, letterboxed and pillarboxed on all sides, but it's pixel-perfect and really sharp-looking, and I'm a sucker for playing games on my television when I'm at home, so this was my personal play method of choice.

2) Vita screen
- PSP games look really good on the Vita screen, if you ask me. Especially if you hold the PS button and turn on all the filter settings, expanded color space, etc. -- everything looks really smooth and pretty, with the only downside being that some of the smaller text is sometimes a little hard to read. (If you play on your Vita screen, though, I highly recommend turning the brightness all the way up, as Brandish looks particularly dark otherwise for some reason.)

3) TV via PSTV
- PSP games aren't particularly sharp on PSTV (they're upscaled, and they look it), but it's still playing the game on your TV (and filling the screen, no less) with a PS3 or PS4 controller, so there ain't a damned thing wrong with this solution.

4) PSP screen
- Going native is fine, and looks especially good with the expanded color space on a 300X model PSP, but I still personally prefer the other three options.

That's super disappointing. Playing on a PC is disgusting. :(

Will be doing PS TV on my HDTV on this. The dualshock 4 is so comfy to play with that it's kinda spoiled me. And I love hearing Falcom music coming through my nice receiver and speakers.

I'd like to play it (probably on the Vita) but Europe am I cry etc.

can we at least know if it's coming out very close to the NA release date or not close at all?

According to Sony, it will be available directly from the Vita on the PSN store from day one, and will be fully compatible with both Vita and PSTV from day one.

Also, for those who just skimmed the OP, here's the website (including new trailer): http://www.brandishpsp.com/

Super excited!

Thanks Tom !

I'm super excited for this game, Freedom Wars will have to go in stand by mode :p

I paid good money for this Dynex!

I keep forgetting that I have the component out cables for the PSP. I'll definitely be playing the game this way. Gonna be sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Not yet. Not until we have a release date ironed out. We're still waiting to hear back from several parties on this before we officially announce anything for overseas. Hopefully won't be too much longer, though! (Blame red tape -- it's always that damned red tape...)

-Tom

Is there any chance for a disc version at all?

Huh? Haven't heard about this. Does Suikoden 2 not work on PSP?

It was a mess. At first the game was on PSP PSN at $6, but that was the incorrect price so Sony took that listing down and put it up at $10. However, that version didn't appear on PSP PSN and seems to not work via the download list or PS3 transfer? It's a bizarre situation.

Eager to try this out.
Been waiting on this game for what seems like a decade now. When I seen it on a list of Japanese PSP games years ago. When the announcement was made I was so happy, but we haven't heard squat since. So glad it's next week. Still have to play my copy of the other PSP game released last year on vita, class of heroes 2.

I'm interested. This looks like a neat twist on the dungeon crawling genre and I know the Brandish games have some good word of mouth.

Never heard of this game before, but the holy trinity of Nihon Falcom, Action RPG and XSEED localization has me ready to grab this on day one. A physical copy would be nice, but the ability to play on my Vita is even nicer.

Cool beans, I imported a Japanese copy of Brandish years ago but didn't really muddle my way through the game all that well. Looking forward to being able to finally play a localised copy.

after I play it in english and if I like it I guess I'll get the japanese (only) retail version, collecting boxes etc. - considering it's a Falcom game I probably won't be disappointed.

Yeah, I actually translated the entire game myself on my own time, off the clock. It was a pure labor of love. ;)

-Tom
that's pretty amazing, bravo.

It works, but only if you downloaded it on your PSP the first day. After that, Sony took away the ability to download the game or even transfer it from the PS3 unfortunately.

For whatever reason, Sony doesn't want Suikoden 2 being played on a PSP.

The Japanese Dev's do the localization programming. It is one of the reasons why Brandish has taken so long, they had to wait for Falcom to do the programming. It is also why we never got Grand Knights History as Vanillaware could not dedicate the time to do the localization programming.

I miss localization teams like Working Designs who did their programming in-house. Took forever, but it had benefits, and at least a GKH-style snafu couldn't happen.

That said, can't wait for this.

It's too bad they didn't do Lunar Sega CD in-house, or we could've had lowercase letters. Someday I'm gonna get around to releasing a patch for that. I already did the first town as a proof of concept (see here).

They didn't? How did they tweak Eternal Blue SCD then? And yeah, that'd be nice, but it kind of has a certain old-school RPG charm, so it didn't bug me too much.

And to answer your question there, I'd guess because it looks kind of cartoony.

Vic responded to that post I linked saying they didn't.

I have to imagine that whether they could've done it in house or not, this time half the problem at least was with the servers and the fact it's essentially designed as an online RPG. This is probably more in the realm of something like Ubisoft or EA picking it up, then deciding that the localized version would be integrated into their servers. And they'd (hell, most any publisher with the resources to handle the online stuff themselves) would probably want to port it around to justify the online expenditure.

It probably doesn't help that some companies wouldn't let them do it in house if they wanted to. I thought I had heard that some companies don't want to give out the source code in some cases so even if you offered they might just say no.

Damn. That makes it a no-buy for me.

Vic is the only person in the world still doing physical psp releases. You are going to miss some good games if you have to have physical.

It sucks, but I'm staunchly against digital distribution ONLY on consoles/handhelds. Give us both options. This game has a physical release in Japan, so if I really need it, I'll just import. Would be nice to have that localized physical, but what can you do?
