Yasunori Mitsuda plays Chrono Trigger music LIVE

Tying both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross together really shows what the "Chrono sound" really is and what Masato Kato was talking about. Hearing themes from the two games interwoven so effortlessly is awesome.

Agreed. The CT/CC medley from Symphonic Fantasies in Cologne was also incredible in this regard. There's a part where the melancholic theme "Prisoners of Fate" slowly and seamlessly transitions into the more hopeful theme "To Far Away Times"... it's so beautiful. I love when the two soundtracks are interwoven like that.

Yeah, I think the best example is Schala's Theme with from the arranged album. Radical Dreamers, Star Stealing Girl, Life, etc. they're all in it.

I listened to this right before going to sleep last night.

So beautiful, it really helped creating pleasant dreams :)

It really is quite beautiful and it just feels right.

This makes me wish He did a live concert series like Nobu does with Distant Worlds. Live Xeno - Trigger - Cross would be amazing.

Nitpick - Distant Worlds is an Arnie Roth production, not an Uematsu one. Uematsu endorses it and shows up in person from time to time, but it's really more of a Square Enix - Arnie thing.

The CT/CC tour mentioned in the thread is more hands-on, with Mitsuda/Millennial/Procyon being way more involved with everything including the arrangements, etc.

He also has a somewhat more unique relationship with his music - he owns all rights to Chrono Cross music, for example (Where Square Enix owns all Final Fantasy stuff)

It's -extremely- rare these days for any project bigger than a $10k indie kickstarter.

It was also rare back then lol.

This I did not know. That seems pretty rare these days.

I thought it was rather common for freelance composers.

Ironically Mitsuda owns the rights to the Chrono Cross music but not the Chrono Trigger music (because he was an employee of Square when he did Trigger), but since Cross music reused a few themes from Trigger, so he could technically release arrangements of these and pass them off as Cross materials, lol.

No. It's very, VERY rare.

There's a ton of Square Enix composers who went freelance but continued working with Square Enix. Typically Square Enix still owns the music. It's all done on a work-for-hire basis, as opposed to a licensing.

Hamauzu with XIII-2 and LR, and Shimomura for FFXV/KH being the best example.

(Disney may or may not own most KH music though, to make it even more hilarious. It's a little complex and I can't really go into detail)

I don't know how I feel about the remixes, especially on the Cross Tracks. I dig the vocals, but it seems to me that you can't improve upon what is already perfect. Time's Scar, Star Stealing Girl, Radical Dreamers - they're god-tier for all time, pretty much.

But he does... in Japan and Taiwan.

It's a concert series to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his career (which is, of course, also the 20th anniversary of Chrono Trigger). The setlist is absolutely glorious:

I wish they'd release a DVD or something.

That setlist is out of this world, what really excites me is that there are tracks from Kirite, my all time favorite thing from Mitsuda. I would kill to hear those live!

I'm actually getting chills listening to My Dear Friends.

I think CT's soundtrack might be the only thing in the world that has a powerful nostalgia effect on me.

Laura Shigihara's voice is indescribably striking.

The full version of Schala's theme broke me in the best of ways, and then slowly put me back together.

It wasn't gaming related though.

did a google check. Apparently, there's a translation patch for the game. I'll be hunting for the game cartridge once I get my next paycheck.

Soma Bringer is worth playing even without considering the soundtrack. It's one of the best hidden gems of the DS (at least in the West).

That feel when Black Omen will never ever ever get an arrangement or a mention.

But oh god I love Yasunori Mitsuda.

Amazing stuff.

I love the fact that Mitsuda managed to get Kumi Tanioka on the piano for the arrangement album as well as these performances. If there's any person who understands the fragility of the Chrono series music, it's Tanioka.

Would kill for a soundtrack of those two collaborating together.

Interesting, didn't know that.

Kato said Square didn't want to hire a freelance composer for Chrono Cross at first, and he had to convince them that a Chrono game without Mitsuda's involvement would make no sense. It's great for Mitsuda that he managed to get the job AND retain the rights to his music.

Amazing stuff.

In the live concerts mentioned above, Mitsuda even got Yoko Shimomura in addition to Kumi Tanioka! That's pretty cool and I love the idea that they're all a bunch of friends who like each other's works.

They so are.

Kinda OT, our concert in Taiwan last year had Hamauzu, Shimomura, Mitsuda, Sakimoto, Makino
and Swery65
all present as guests. It was a perfect storm of everything lining up, plus Taiwan being relatively close to Japan which made travel plans easier. Uematsu so very nearly could have made it too. :(

I think that was pretty much the most fangasm week of my life. Except I can't fangasm because it's work lol.

Man, Mitsuda & Millennial Fair's concerts look so much fun...

Searched all over YouTube, can't find any clip at all ;_;

I love this man. Thanks for sharing! Love Chrono Trigger.

Xenogears is my favorite OST by farrrrr tho. It gives me more feels than anything.

I always wished he would do a live version of id's song(ido is how Perfect Works spelled id, so I used it for my username).

Feels.

Mitsuda the god.

The Chrono arranged album is almost perfect.
If it only had a Dreamwatch of Time arrangement on top of all the tracks, it would have been the album of the forever
