Shenmue 3 came out ages ago.
They were called Yakuza and Sleeping Dogs

My thoughts too. They carried on the niche role of open-world urban Japan/China.
Shenmue was great for its time, but trying to convince the masses that yet another open-world city adventure is the one to look out for over GTA/SR/Just Cause/WatchDogs is a tall order. Only a minority other than the original Shenmue fans will care that Shenmue 3 is finally on its way, also.

Kind of completely misses the point though, don't you think? Those games don't have nearly as much focus put on the small details and immersion that Shenmue had. It's not really about having an open world game, its more about solving a mystery while living a day to day life. The setting isn't so important.
