Halo 5 Opening Cinematic

I agree 343's Halo is over the top, but eh, I had fun with this being the crazy CG intro.

Their art style isn't my cup of tea at all though. The forerunner posted above is a ton more forerunner, and looks way cooler IMO. I wish they didn't go so crazy with the prometheans.. they look like Megatron.

This also looks way cooler.

Meh, in a cutscene I don't mind, but I do hate what they did to Lockdown. That looks awful.

For what it's worth I think this Warzone map is set in the same environment, and it looks ok.

It's a bit orange, but nothing as manufactured looking as Lockdown. I do wish it was dialed back a bit more though.

I freaking hate that they do this time of day. Warm toned white balance doesn't look clean. It looks gross. Either go all out and make it sunset or make it gorgeous clean snow. The in between looks so unfortunate.

Yah, I've read The Fall of Reach. Pretty ok story... full of goofy moments like the one you just described. Worked ok on the page as a sort of "glory days" backstory, but I much preferred the way first few games treated such feats as "myths" of days past - before the Spartans met their end. It was just... better storytelling. It added to the world's mystique (Chief's in particular), whereas dime-a-dozen action sequences like this one take away from it (consistent with the lore, or not)

Anyway, I'm sure the game will be just fine. I'm just lamenting something I miss from the previous installments. The "goose-bump" element, if you will.

I feel the same way; ironically, it takes away the sense of awe you have for the Spartans and makes the amazing things they're doing feel ordinary and routine. I'm still excited for the game, but this trailer didn't do that much for me.

It is different, but I can't deny it wasn't incredibly well done.

When you compare it to the Halo 3 opening though, it does seem to lack some... What's the word? Refinement?

Halo 3 has some subtlety to it, a touching and personal scene that sets the stage of a more insular story about the struggle of one Spartan. This is like a scene out of The Avenges by comparison.

Well like I said, that's not the entire intro.

Well, I am putting down 10 bucks (hah) on the MC being in the omitted part of the intro.

Intro was pretty damn sick, and it's nice to know that it will instantly cut to the game. I am guessing that's going to be the part where Buck and Locke tackle the elites and Buck tosses the sword to Locke (although that seemed to be at night).

In terms of music, it's cool that they are further elaborating on the Halo 4 theme for fireteam Osiris' (albeit with a lot more classic halo vibe). Then it makes sense for Chief's theme to be good ol' classic Halo monks and whatnot.

To be fair, I'm not super deep into the lore of Halo, but this is the kind badassery I always expected from Spartans and boy did this cinematic deliver.

I held a copy of Nighfall in my hand yesterday, I don't suppose it's anything like this cinematic.

Not going to lie--I just watched it again on full screen via a 24 inch monitor and a lot of the things that I thought looked horribly awkward while watching it on my phone didn't look so bad.

I actually quite like it now, aside for a few "Hollywood, cuz we can" moments.

I do agree that they don't hit the range of colors and atmosphere that a snowy environment during a sunset conveys.

While some bits are painted with pink and orange, the majority keeps a cool blue and crisp white which all contrasts nicely. The Halo environments seem to mostly be lacking the blue to contrast against.

Now this looks really cool. Total disconnect between cutscenes and gameplay, ubdoubtedly. Was constantly thinking "why aren't they letting us play this".

So many people need to look closer it seems like... they used their suits to fly, slide and run through a battle... not kill all of them by themselves.

Pretty cool cutscene. It really seemed too easy for them though. They honestly seem like super heroes now. But it's whatever, I enjoyed it.

On the art style and choices of color palate I agree with people above me. I'm just not a fan of some of the colors 343i uses. For instance compare Valhalla in Halo 3 with Halo 4. Or some other maps. It just doesn't GOOD. And some of the armor designs and enemy designs, just meh.

Someone on the first page or so said the Flood was a better enemy than the Promethians. NOPE. Flood were terrible. Just bad. And while Promethans sucked in Halo 4, 343 might get them right in Halo 5. There's more to enemy encounters than just design. They might look the same but hopefully they fight (somewhat) different.

A lot of people seem to think that this isn't within the range of Spartans can do. IIs could definitely do this, an elite team of IVs like Osiris could probably do so as well. If you watch the trailer closely it becomes quite obvious that they are simply punching through and the Covenant are generally occupied with other enemies, UNSC and Forerunner in origin.

Also, I really really hope that the Prometheans are back to being the third faction again in the sense that they will also attack Covenant entities. The trailer seems to imply this, looking at the Phaeton and the Knight that is swinging around. It would be curious though, as Escalation details that Jul still retains control over Promethean forces (for whatever reason).

That is what I did not understand from some of the negative comments making it sound like all this destruction was coming from just the 4 Spartans. You can easily tell by paying a little attention that there is a bigger war that had started before the Spartans jumped into the action.

Indeed. In the trailer there are Forerunners. Between 2:50 and the end of the trailer, we can see a fighter, a bigger ship and Knights.

Have you ever seen a sunset in mountains?

Spartan IVs are looking way overpowered? Not even the Master Chief could do that what we saw in this trailer.

The Masterchief can do that... But Halo is a videogame with its own technical limitation.

Not quite Blizzard level.

....but pretty good.

Of course blizzard use full CGI this was using in-game asset with some extra on top of it.

Really nice cinematic I got goosebumps watching it. I can't wait to see the animated Fall of Reach I liked that book so much.

SO MUCH COOLER

They feel elegant, as if they come from a civilization with deep cultural roots. Not some Transformer rejects. OH WELL. I should probably stop complaining about this, 343 isn't gonna change the Promethean art direction in any big way.

We're fighting digitized Forerunners and Humans, in Halo 5 we're also fighting Armigers, which are essentially complete constructs (instead of Knights, who still have a somewhat Human or Forerunner shell).

That's sort of the duality with the Forerunners, while the originals might be elegant, the Didact's manifestations are not so much.

That looks much more artfully color adjusted than 343's attempts have ever looked. They have a stale daytime look with bloom lighting.

Cool trailer but I found it oddly off putting for the game itself.

I'm not into the expanded Universe lore, I'm worn out by idea of fighting more covenant and this trilogy is starting to feel like Star Wars prequels vs original trilogy for me. Better effects but losing the mystique in the process.

I reckon this will be first Halo mainline Halo I don't get at launch. I'll wait to see how opinions on online go after launch as I didn't like Halo 4 online much.

I'm not a fan of the orange snow look either, but I don't think it's too much in the trailer. Sometimes the sun's color really does look like that on the snow.

That was the single most savage halo action acene I have ever seen.

Dear god that might make my buy an xbox for this.

Just make Platinum do a Vanquish style Halo game.

The cut to the title card was great. Then having them float along the battlefield was a bit much.

Impressive, but less us more, I think. Feels like there should have been more restraint in showing how "badass" fire team osiris is. The intro makes it look like they outran a falling ship, which feels like a big disconnect from what players will be capable of in the game.

Ok, so a picture taken by me (The Mont Blanc^^)?

The faces exposed to the sun are clearly "orange" while the ones in the shadows are more blue. Just like this trailer.

Okay? The issue is the overwhelming bloom and tint of afternoon warm tones making for an unpleasant visual scene. It's just plain aesthetically gross to me. Warm tones look less clean, yet they can't resist. But they never quite go to sunset, just this hazy late afternoon look. They are ruining what could be perfectly crisp and clean visuals with bloom and stale yellowing and warm tones. Either make a clear and vibrant sunset like in your picture prior, or make it clean daylight. Stop with this smoggy warm color.

If you want some blue tones, the next scene after this cut-scene is that:

Now, Osiris Fireteam is in the shadow. Tones are cold.

Trailers like this are all about hyping you up, when it comes to playing the game you can't do that shit... Run at covy like that and you're dead.

They must be playing on easy.

Love the whole scene though, really well done.

That was sick. I don't know what I was expecting, but holy shit. Very Avengers, in a good way.

Hope they didn't go too crazy with this stuff in the full game. It's best in small doses.

I don't want them to throw in every type of scene. I want the ugly ones out. That's how good art design and cinematography are done. You choose a stunning and manageable palette and stick with a methodology. 343 has no methodology. They use colors at random, even when they aren't flattering to a scene or assets, and they especially aren't consistent across a game in order to give it any kind of color signatures. Their scenes just have so much bloom and red and yellow and purple in muted tones so they don't even add flare to the scene. It's just a very muddled and poorly restrained palette in my opinion, and that's it. It's bothered me all along with their projects.

it seems I'm one of the few who did not like it.

running over the snow like they are legolas..liked the beginning, the talking but everything else I just spaced out. I kind of expected to be able to play the way down the mountain. You know, they land, you take the controller and fight. I don't want to see spartans fighting I want to play the spartans while fighting o.o.

mind you I'm a big fan (or was) I imported stuff from the official bungie store back in the days and had to pay a lot of taxes for importing lol. but I think I'll buy this halo on a budget.

Happy for everyone who liked it, halo has changed and it seems I am just not the focus group anymore.

yeah that also.

I cant disagree. Hopefully the campaign spaces are better than the multiplayer maps in this respect.

I just don't know how we ended up with some weird Megatron looking things when all this amazing art existed previously.

All of that art is sleek, 'forerunner' and most importantly, unique. I just feel like I have seen what we're getting in a lot of games/movies before.

Ah well. =(
Seriously, what happened? Those designs are beautiful. Exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping to see in Halo 4.
It always kills me when fans of a series which first title has "combat evolved" in it complain about combat evolving.
I bet Star Wars fans would complain if Disney added space pirates and space ninjas too, hurr. The nerve of fans, knowing what made them fans in the first place and wanting the series to stay true to that.

BRB, going to evolve the Mona Lisa by drawing a Joker grin on it in fluorescent paint. Suck it down, art nerds. Welcome to the future.

That looked brilliant. Now imagine the intro for Blue team. *gasps!*

The game still needs to inject that sense of mystery and wonder like the first game did. That will be tough to pull off though with 3 other walking tanks by your side though.

Still...it made ny return back to work a lot less depressing after the bank holiday weekend.

Good luck to you 343. Hope you lot smash it out of the park! <3 I was sold from the moment I played the beta.
