Halo 5 Opening Cinematic

I can say it looks like crap if that's what I feel it does. No context in any of the games other than MC falling like a rock in the 3rd one to ever make things look like this. At least the last few games gave weight and some sort of danger to the scenes, this just looked like a scene from Just Cause fast forward 3x.

The Halo games NEVER accurately depict the lore and fantasy, for gameplay reasons what you actually play is a heavily tuned down in power version of a Spartan. The things they do in the trailer were described multiple times in other non-game Halo media, like free-fall orbital drops without insertion vehicles, Chief falling onto earth using a scrap as heat shield, Blue team destroying about a thousand covenant troops unscathed, heck Will-043 even killed a Hunter in hand to hand combat. All these powerfulness was written in the universe by Bungie, this trailer merely put it to "reality". And you are not getting this in game too.

I don't think this is production CG since it is not rendered by a rendering engine like Mental Ray or Vray. Instead all the frames are rendered by the game engine just not in real time. This way they can improve the resolutions on all of the maps and use as many lights as possible.

lol

For a cinematic, that was pretty damn cool.

I'm still bummed about the loss of the brodown, but at least this seems to get at some of the fun that had seemed to go missing in all the grim somber seriousness of late.

Still waiting on Forge info before I make any decision about this game though.

You don't "make a decision" on Halo. Halo makes a decision on you. Are you worthy to pick up the fight with your fireteam and finish the fight?

Seriously - you're buying it.

Well, you'd certainly know better. :B

And you are now getting this in game too.
Fixed that for ya.

Not quite the same, that was the Jetpack Armor Ability. While the Thruster was an Armor Ability in Halo 4 that you couldn't access until much later in the game's Campaign, it was kind of depicted as part of the armor by default, based on the cutscenes.

Yeah it was before integration I was just kinda showing how the thrusters worked it was an attachment at this point but it's integrated into the suits later on.

I have infinite stamina for genuine curiosity.

Well to be fair there are multiple conversations going on about multiple aspects of the trailer- from "are these game assets" to "is this gameplay " and beyond.

I have infinite stamina for genuine curiosity. And none for concern trolling. This was the former.

Will blue team have something to show off their individual skill sets? Are we getting some spartan on spartan action?

In cinematic not while we are playing kind of a blue team action sequence.

Kelly moves faster and is equipped with a Forerunner enhanced Shotgun, Linda always starts the level with a Sniper Rifle, dunno about Fred and Chief's abilities.

CGI is a catch-all for any computer generated imagery. There's not an extensive list of additional requirements that must be met for it to be CGI; any pre-rendered computer generated footage, regardless of methods used to render it, is by nature CGI.

Stinkles pointed out that it was in-game assets and what-not paired with heavy post-processing for the sake of being more specific. Either way though, it's still CGI.

Also, for the record, Stinkles' other post:

I said it was CG based on game assets in this very thread and on the first page of the other one.

I see, then. Thanks, and I did read all three threads regarding this trailer, I don't know how I managed to miss the one post that had "CG" in it. Apologies.
But then anything that is prerendered is CGI? So instead of running the game live, one can prerender it and, without adding any other effects, call it CGI? I guess when I think of CGI, I think of Pixar-like prerenders, but I guess the definition fits anything that is prerendered.

We gonna get something similar either pre-release or at all during the game for Blue Team? Would be cool if Blue Teams introduction is similar to when Chief stands up after falling in the beginning of Halo 3.

I hope not. Honestly I am totally fine with them keeping the inevitably bad ass Blue Team intro and corresponding cutscenes/levels/info under wraps. That alone is keeping me super hyped up for the campaign.

Pretty sure in the game unless you are playing on Easy you still get rekt pretty easy by a elite squad lol.
Well, yeah, sure. Thought you were just talkin' about what they could do, not how easy of a time they'd have of it. :p

I get what you're saying, but it's not the same thing. Jetpack remained a separate Armor Ability in Halo 4, while the Thrusters were made to be a part of the armor itself. Like I said in that linked post, the opening cinematic even showed a group of Spartan IIs using them, so it's not like 343's trying to pass that off as a consequence of the new technology that came alongside the Spartan IV program, but making it out to be something that has been a part of the Mjolnir armor for a while now.

Kelly moves faster and is equipped with a Forerunner enhanced Shotgun, Linda always starts the level with a Sniper Rifle, dunno about Fred and Chief's abilities.
They all start with specific weapons, and Kelly moves a lil' bit faster than the others, but they're supposed to play generally the same.

Maybe there'll be discrepancies in their shield strength, or weapon/melee damage values. But I wouldn't expect anything significant.

I was sort of hoping DIGIC would handle the CGI, as their stuff is a little better, IMO. But still, impressive stuff.

Is the only CGI cinematic going to be the opening? Hoping for opening and ending CGI cinematics, plus a few others throughout the campaign for visually intensive moments.

I'm not trying to say it's the same thing more so that armor integrated jetpacks had a little precursor. One could infer that it would be a natural evolution of the tech to eventually have it integrated into the suits.

I was asking about cinematic i should have been more clear.

Still salty she isn't Platinum Games fast.

And go watch the announcement trailer of Halo 4, it was already on Chief's armor.

I really am quite intrigued to see where they go with the storyline. The 'is Master Chief a hero or a traitor?' thing they've been pushing in their pre-release stuff is so incredibly stupid and uninteresting that it makes me think there's some really big twist early on that they're keeping under their hat. It would explain why we've seen so little footage from the campaign too.

We've seen so little footage because they're saving it for just the right time, so they can properly surprise and excite fans while also making sure that we aren't left suffering through a situation where we've seen so much of the game prior to release that we've grown tired of specific things. We are in a day and age in gaming where there's very little surprises these days prior to a game's release. We need to get back to those days. The fact that so much of this game's single player campaign is still such a big mystery is most satisfying to me.

Anybody have some quotes from the various books that support the extraordinary abilities the Spartans have? I am in an argument with a friend and I truly don't want to search the books literally. LOL

ok so let me get this straight...

without armor:

runs 19 miles per hour

bench press 2 tons

with armor= 5x normal

95 miles per hour

10 tons, correct? just wanna get the facts straight

I think he runs faster w/o the armor though but this is from a respect thread

I can't quote them directly since, well, I can't find the exact lines in like 10 minutes lol. But in the Nylund books the Spartan IIs did a ton of superhuman feats:

John in his teens, killed/incapacitated a platoon of ODSTs, naked.
In First Strike, the Spartan IIs orbit-inserted onto Reach from a damaged Pelican without any reverse propulsion to soften the impact, they suffered losses but it was insane regardless.
At the beginning of one of the books (First Strike or Fall of Reach?) Blue Team and Red Team used inhuman precision and strategic prowess to wipe out a brigade worth of covenant without any casualty.

It is pretty much a fact that if one or more Spartan IIs were present in a infantry fight UNSC always wins decisively because of the Spartans' sheer amount of combat capability, a Mark VI Mjolnir equipped Spartan II is literally an avatar of God of War.

inda has improved optics or microscopic vision as compared to the other Spartans. Fred, I suspect, possesses more innate tactical knowledge of things such as enemy weakpoints, and is able to more easily identify potential alternate routes or things that can give the team an advantage? I don't know, but that sounds pretty cool for Fred's abilities.

Essentially, he would almost be like a version of Osiris' Artemus tracking system all by his lonesome, but perhaps with some important differences.

Conjecture:

Fireteam Osiris, thematically, is sort of like the bad-ass superhero squad. Organized and pretty tactical but perhaps... over-confident?

Blue Team is stoic and very calculated; experience nets them the upper-hand despite dated armor (is their armor dated though)?

Honestly surprised people like it, for me it was the most hilarious Michael Bay Breh trailer in a long time.

With that kind of argument just about anything that leads to heavy, stylish action and explosions can be described the exact same way.

343i did specifically refer to Osiris as the avengers. It's hard to say what's dated on Blue Team from what isn't because we know that members of Blue Team have been in proper contact with humanity for some time whereas the Chief is a recent re-addition to the fold. And who knows what he's been up to since, so it's entirely possible that nothing much has changed with regards to his armor since Halo 4. Well, clearly something has changed because he has that new badass thruster pack.

Chief's armor is slightly dated but the rest of the squad is pretty much on par with the S4s. For example Fred's Centurion armor is actually the prototype of GEN2 Mjolnir armor the S4s wear.

I'd also like to mention that I am very ok with the game opening on a snowy planet.

Just reached from the dashboard with good headphones...still can't get over how good the music is.

Mhmm, I'm using AD700's cans and the sound is phenomenal.

If we want to get even more technical, I don't think anyone has mentioned that a Spartan II is supposed to be equal to an Elite Major (Red). All of those Elites are blue.

I guess you could argue that Spartan IV is equal to a blue Elite in that case, but eh...

Wouldn't a IV in the new armor be equal to the IIs and Elite Major though? Armor being the biggest factor.

Elites are much faster and stronger than Spartans.

Remember Spartan IIs also have gen 2 armor so shouldn't the II's have all the bonuses of a Spartan IV + their own buffs.

Not sure about stronger unless you are talking about the higher Elites. Found numerous mentions about Spartans and Elites strength wise but it (it being the extended Lore)doesn't seem to ever mention how fast an Elite can run.

chief got his armor removed at the end of H4. I don't know if that scene would mean anything in H5.

If that's the case then it's all the more reason why nothing shown there would be out of the ordinary (except maybe ground pounding a Wraith).

The Wraith was moving down a steeper section of the mountain, its new design is bottom-heavy and Tanaka's an engineer. She makes articulate calculations to indiscriminately smash into things at maximum efficiency - overturning a Wraith in this scenario isn't that far-fetched.

The Elites' physical strength is at least on par with a Mark V equipped Spartan II, as was shown in Fall of Reach when John barely edged out an Elite in close quarter combat. And of course their strength differs based on their armor (combat harness). But even without armor, a Sangheili is well above the pinnacle of a normal human.
