AMD CEO reveals next-gen Xbox could launch in 2027 — CEO says semi-custom SoC ready to 'support launch in 2027'

I think that's exactly the reason for the launch.
To suck up the brand fanatics who defend and buy any crap Xbox releases.

Besides, of course, being an argument for brand fanatics to continue defending them online:

"MS didn't abandon us, they launched the 'magnus' PC with backwards compatibility that costs 200% more than the PS5 and is only 25% more powerful on paper."
"We'll continue defending Xbox because of that, victory."

One of the many problems with the Xbox executives is their fetish for cultivating brand fanaticism, for giving brand fanaticism arguments to "win" online discussions.

Every time you post the same shit in every Xbox topic, it gets funnier.

Did you also find it funny when people said the PS5 was a great console and didn't have "last-minute overclocking" or "desperate Sony" issues?

That's why they need to teach humanities in schools, so people learn to observe the past and understand that it's indicative of the future.

If I could bet on positive and negative rumors, I'd just close my eyes and bet on negative Xbox rumors and positive PlayStation rumors... I'd make a lot of money.

"Forced clock speed will be bad for developers," Jason Ronald.

The console that's bad for developers is the Xbox Series S.

Do you understand what a history of failures and a history of victories are?

The phrase "mockery is the last refuge of the incapable" (often paraphrased as "of the defeated") suggests that mockery is a defense mechanism used when arguments, competence, or the ability to deal with a situation directly and maturely are lacking.

Yes I indeed I had forgotten about this. But they could engineer the MB in order to have the same path length going to the GPU. Couldn't they?
Yeah they already do but how does this help you to DYI install GDDR? They don't make GDDR DIMMs. Are you gonna solder chips yourself individually?

This thing is going to be interesting but pretty niche imo....more akin to a pro console than a base console.
This is well known at this point and Xbox is fine with that. This will help keep their revenue from crashing and they'll still have tons of people on Xbox one, series, and then the new console will get some people as well. I'm just waiting to see if they ever get FSE working properly. Tons of people have issues with it. Now with MS working on just getting windows 11 to work properly how many people are even focusing on the FSE?

It's going to be funny to see the people talking about "expensive $699" have to defend the sticker price when this launches. I suspect it would lean into how "premium" they think it is.

Really curious how they will manage the business/economic side of that. Will they try to get like a 5-10% fee to get at least some returns and avoid making the HW too expensive?

I'm interested in finding out how 'future proof' whatever hardware spec they put out will be, i-e is it gonna be a thing that someone can buy and have it as a viable Console/PC hybrid for years.

I HATE to sound like flame war... but I will: since WHEN MS think about medium-long term plans? We saw with creating and throwing Kinect and the whole gamepass concept...

Isn't this good for Sony?

Sony could do modifications and adjust the PS6 to be more powerful than the new Xbox and do the "we have the most powerful console blablabla"...

Magnus is modular, MS could easily replace the AT2 GMD in 2029 with w/e RDNA6 has and have something more powerful than the PS6 again.

The stores are ready to come onboard.

Not quite. "if they do follow through" suggests there is some doubt.

"We've been talking about a bunch of these things," Allison tells me. "We've been talking to the folks at Microsoft. If they do follow through with allowing Steam and the Epic Games Store on the next generation of Xbox console hardware, we will be there. I'm fairly certain that'll require us to build an app that functions there."

Edit - But but, if next gen Xbox is just a PC why is this needed?

Someone still hasn't told Jez.

"On Xbox, Epic is also aware of the rumors. The next Xbox is a PC in essence, and thusly, will feature Steam, GOG, and indeed any PC store you want to install."

The sheer irony of you piping up about fanaticism

Sony is launching at the same time and doesn't care about being more powerful than the $1500 Xbox.
Didn't we just get news that Sony might be delayed up to 2030? If they launched at the same time, sure, but if it launches 3 years later, they will certainly care about sending their new high-tech console out to get trounced by a 3 year old xbox in capability. Thats near half a gen later, not a great look, and the specs would look very weak for that tech phase and time.

lol at "fairly certain we'll have to build an app" because Epic has no clue how the next Xbox will work and apparently hasn't read the insiders at Windows Central's takes lol

The No Walled Gardens Coalition™ begins as a bunch of us called it for their PC "console" last year.

Expect the lawsuits to ramp up outside of their proxy one for Steam in the UK.
MS continuing on their "if we destroy it all we can win it all" path and their astroturfers / apologists paving the way and raising the pro consumer banner in the most disingenuous way possible… and you wonder why people just find you 'turfers insufferable…

It's completely irrelevant at this point. The next " Xbox" or whatever you want to call that abomination is not even going to do WiiU/Dreamcast/WiiU numbers.

What Sony actually needs to worry about is a mass market friendly price.

The wording is interesting

Should tell people there is definitely a console in the mix

Do they actually stay alive long enough to bring it to market is another question

But, again, it's running Windows. Which means BC needs to be baked into Windows. So if the AMD chips can do backwards compatibility.. why not just enable BC on a third party OEM device? Microsoft already did this with the Copilot+ pcs, where they all used the new AI chips that Microsoft helped make.

Seems contradictory, doesn't it? Jez says it is a PC so obviously you can install whatever you want on it. Epic says it is a console and they hope MS will let them put their store on it (which means it isn't a PC).

I don't get how Jez wrote that didn't see how the two statements don't jive.

That would open up to piracy gangbang. I'd imagine there is something hardware wise to lock down XB software. Maybe dual booting OSes? Who knows? Mystery is killing tbh.

The more I read, given MS strenght on console market (which is next to none) the more i see a destiny similar to Surface 🙃 Specially if a hardware upgrade will be necessary in the future, like 'you need more memory, or a better processor'..

At this point, does it even matter what Xbox puts out? They have de facto lost their "console baseline" status. They could put out a supercomputer and the next playstation would still dictate what games are designed to run on.
So whatever they release in the end, it will be just another gadget among many.

So you know how currently games are designed to run on the PlayStation 5 but you can buy it on PC and it's a I better looking game that even runs better? So yeah it matters to some of us who aren't PlayStation fanboys. Pretty simple. Not all of us have stock in Microsoft or Sony...

Also, don't devs have upgrades for PS5 Pro despite it selling like shit compared to the base console?

I think K KeplerL2 nailed it back in Oct honestly

Jez is confusing "Xbox console" and "Xbox PC" as if they are the same thing

What news? It was just the opinion of an analyst. That's literally it.
Heck, and even he just said something like 2028 or later, where the fuck is 2030 even coming from.

PS6 is still 2027.

Wait for Epic to make a game free, attach it to your account. Play it on your Xbox. Great if you own an Xbox. Not great for Microsoft.
Unless Epic stop doing that, in which case nobody will buy games on Epic, because for some reason people love Monopolies in gaming.

You can buy a pc right now with better specs than the next xbox. The people who want that already purchased that....

The rumored price is $1000 - $1200 so it's not a high volume device. Again, I don't understand the rush to score an own goal?

Care to post a link to one of those PCs in the rumored performance range I can buy right now?
Console size, naturally. And under $1500, naturally.

Very strange. So these companies are going to have to build an app in order to get the games to install\run? So does that mean they also have to make changes to every single PC gaming that installs from their app? If their standard store doesn't work out of the box doesn't that also mean the games wont work out of the box?

They are "Fairly certain" which is another way of saying they don't actually know.

None of it makes any sense unless the next Xbox really is just Windows, although I know some people here seem to think there will be 2 devices which is extra strange.

If it's "just Windows" Epic/Steam/etc don't have to do anything

Will this talk with Xbox be a request for them to release their first-party games on the Epic Games Store? Right now, I think Microsoft only releases on PC/Windows/Xbox Store, right?

The funny thing is that Microsoft, AMD, S. Bond, P. Spencer, and every Xbox executive have always distinguished between "Xbox console" and "Xbox PC" in every announcement, interview, and publication of information about their "NextGen hardware plan" (aka Magnus)...🤷

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to them making that hardware plan (and specially how they will execute It) official and putting an end to the speculation.

Do you have any examples of this?

Because this very thread is an example of AMD NOT doing what you say lol
