Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Team Ninja returns with another action game that's plenty of fun to play, but once again exhibits a range of technical issues that take the shine off an otherwise enjoyable experience. Tom Morgan guides you through all the modes available on both PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles.

00:00 Introduction
02:18 Prioritise FPS vs Resolution Mode Comparison
04:08 PS5 Pro Enhancements - The Upsides
05:45 PS5 Pro Enhancements - The Downsides

- "Open field" layout, not quiet a loading free open world but broader than previous games
- Uses proprietary Katana engine
- Produces results that are 'at times underwhelming'
- Open field design is 'blighted by visual bugs', like notable pop-in in geometry in all modes

- Both PS5's have two modes, Prioritize FPS and Resolution.
- No RT mode unlike Rise of Ronin.

- Base PS5: - FPS mode: 720p~1152p DRS - Resolution mode: Fixed 1152p
- PS5 Pro: - FPS mode: 792p~1296p with very rare 1440p moments - Resolution mode: Fixed 1440p

- Shadows, texture and geometry quality a match between PS5/Pro
- Screen space reflection quality is higher on Pro with less flicker
- Shadow maps can occasionally render farther away on Resolution mode on either console
- IQ and resolution are the main difference between the two modes
- PS5 Pro uses PSSR instead of FSR on base PS5
- PSSR helps avoid ghosting trail during movement
- Drawbacks of PSSR: Blurrier output in static shots compared to base PS5
- SSR resolve with more shimmer and breakup on PS5 Pro
- PS5 Pro introduces notable flickering when DRS is stressed in FPS mode during combat/exploration, this issue is not seen on base PS5.

- Performance generally tends to stick to 60fps with some lurches on either PS5
- Explosions, ninjitsu skills etc can see drops from the 60
- Best way is to engage VRR, PS5 Pro sees no notable performance improvement over base

- 30fps Resolution mode is locked to 30 but suffers with poor frame pacing
- Though DF recommends avoiding this mode for game play.
- All cut-scenes are lokced to 30fps with frame pacing issues regardless of mode

- DF thinks the Katana engine is behind the curve on providing a 'modern experience'
- Materials often look low quality for a current gen title, along with the various bugs noted
- "Be prepared for rough edges when exploring the world"

The game can look great at times, the art directions is solid but sometimes you can find these textures that really break the immersion. This engine needs an upgrade ASAP

100%. Nioh 3 would be considered a generational game if it didnt have graphical and performance issues. Engine sucks so much ass
I agree. Such a badass game that could be a goat given the proper treatment.

It's like Primal. If Primal was a live action series it would be the greatest show on TV but it's animated in kinda a WB way so nobody knows it exists.

NiOH wouldn´t be NiOH if Team Ninja didn`t slip in PS2 textures and models here and there.

What do you mean? Those are yokai textures. They're supposed to be ugly.

Borderline Ps3 graphics somehow running at Ps3 era resolutions even on the Ps5 pro. Can't even offer a locked 60fps experience despite that.
Yup, that's a Team Ninja game.

I'm going to buy it on a deep sale like all their games.

does every game need to look like it cost $300 million?

How many times have I read on this forum that games cost too much to make, devs are way too focused on fidelity, gameplay over graphics, spend less and release the damn thing...

somebody give them a loan for some engineers. how does their games still look like ps3 and run like ass. i think we could forgive the ugly a bit if they ran at like 300 fps

Decent graphic, good art, stable and excellent combat, that's what matters most.

Remember Elden ring and Dark soul or even Sekiro graphics are average but the combat and art are excellent.

It's definitely behind the times, but I think some of the visuals are just suffering from bad design.

Compare the above to this AC:Unity shot:

The leaves are just colored blobs. The texture on the large wall is low res. Same with the base layer of ground.
But all the scene elements are composited in an artistic way to look better than the individual components.

TLDR: They should have put a big tree in front of that giant ugly rock.

Meh .. dont care.. people said the same thing about Rise of the Ronin and I had a blast with that game.

Kickass No bullshit action rpg game with excellent gameplay , omg that texture on stills are awful bro!

Yeah.. fuck it.

What's holding me back from getting in to this series has less to do with "graphics" and more to do with its Diablo style loot system….I HATE that system so much.

We have studios doing fucking nothing for years and releasing multimillion turds

Meanwhile in 6 years team ninja released:
Nioh 2
Wo long
Rise of the Ronin
Ninja Gaiden 4
Nioh 3
And more...

So ... pick your poison, Ill take the studio releasing games.

when FF7R has blurry textures it's "omg I can never play that!" when NIOH 3 has mobile indie game textures " GOTY! " :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I wouldn't mind the visuals if the performance wasn't piss poor. How long does Team Ninja usually take to patch their games?

Ninja Gaiden 4 is Platinum Games with Platinum's own engine, that's why it doesn't run and look like shit.

Both FF and Nioh games are often picked apart for their poor visuals and performance. A good game is a good game though, even if it looks and performs badly.

PC version aint better either. If your fps dips below the locked 60/120, it'll stutter like a motherfucker which means if the game does stutter by itself it'll cause additional ones. It's mostly a smooth experience tho, but the lighting is ass, with a lot of crushed blacks and too dark areas in bright daylight. That being said, it's a fun game, just like the second.

PSSR not working with dynamic res is probably why almost no game actually uses dynamic res in combination with PSSR.
I wonder why Team Ninja decided to do it.

also, once again incomplete denoising breaking PSSR, so that's not surprising to see.

but one has to wonder how developers still fail to properly accommodate PSSR.
