Sony hikes up PS5 pricing in April: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99 PS5 Pro – $899.99, Portal $249.99

lol single best thing I did was to give my PS5 away and go full PC, the gap in prices between a decent PC or even a gaming laptop vs PS5 Pro is just so small and a console is just a console, it plays that's it. A PC/laptop on the other hand can do everything and anything.

Best decision to ditch console gaming, while PC (RAM/GPU) prices are going high, I still don't care because it's still is a great investment for it will lasts longer and play much much better.
No it's not. PC components are expensive as ever!

I am so happy I got out of the Sony ecosystem after the PS5 PRO released to an insane price. That is when I knew they were back to arrogant Sony.

Is Sony retarded? They already have the lead in the console market, yet you're pricing everyone out. If they're putting the PS5 Pro at nearly £800, the PS6 is more than likely going to be at least £850. I'm sorry, but your general audience is not paying nearly £900 for a console. The thing is that it's not even a little increase, it's roughly a £80 increase on the PS5 Pro, which was already overpriced.

These gaming companies are getting out of hand. This might be the dumbest decision Sony has ever made.

Welcome to a an industry without competition. As long as PC prices climb, Sony will just continue to try to fleece their customers as much as possible.

Oh the system will survive, but the playerbase will shrink despite record breaking profits.

Nah....not at these prices it can NOT survive. Because if a 6 year old console that was $400 at launch is now $600..........that means something new will be at least 25% higher. There's no reason to believe a disc-less PS6 won't be at least $800 "minimum". But $1000 is possible.

And if that's happening on the console front, what do you think will happen with the price of GPUs?

They don't have the lead in terms of WW sales since the Switch 2 launched.

People do not understand that Google is not obligated to share this tech with anyone else, and could even use it to get more RAM and be able to squeeze out more performance out of their purchase lol.

The core mathematical principals are under an open research model, and are free and available for anyone to read and adapt into code.
It's the Google implementation of these mathematical principals that will be limited, probably to a commercial license.
This means that other companies can and will look at these mathematical papers and do their own implementation into software and hardware.

Still greedy.
To be greedy, would mean that they were making a profit on units sold, and decided that they wanted to make $100 more and just hike up prices.

That's not even remotely what's happening here. What are they supposed to do? Sell at a loss?
You expected a price increase on a five year console?
You expected Ram prices to have spiked by over 200%???? Is that normal ever? Or you somehow thought that every ram using piece of tech would go up in price except gaming consoles cause they are immune somehow.

And not even just ram, the Philippines recently declared a state of emergency because they have just 9 days of diesel left...

It's like some ppl are living in a bubble.

But why are they complaining...?

After all, many of them are just going to show off their day-one purchases on social media...

Like shoppers always do.

PS6 launch price is so cooked.

Nintendo needs to do whatever the hell they can to hold at $450 because that's the only thing that will sustain Switch 2 sales.

Sony lost the fucking plot with $900 Pro.
A temporary $500 switch 2 ($50 increase) is the most if any that they could safely get by with.
Going higher is risky and ideally staying at the current prices would be best.

Lmao. Greedy prices from a greedy company.

Go on fanboys, defend this move.

I personally don't believe that this has something to do with Greedy.

It's just that all Component Prices to build a PlayStation Console are going Up.

Edit: Shipping and Packaging Prices are also going Up.

I can't tell if you're doing a snarky bit being sarcastic or if you really believe it "can NOT survive."

Your first post seemed like sarcasm, but you're doubling down.

My gut still says you're being snarky.

Playstation will be fine, but they will shed some fans.

They already have their audience locked in - they now just need to maximize the monetization of them - and anyone else who wants to join will do so with an upfront profit just buying the hardware.
MS have abandoned the hardware subsidization model, Nintendo did a long time ago, Sony would be stupid not to follow suit.

I've said in the past that I think if they have to raise it to $500, they should bundle in a switch game that runs at 4k on Switch 2 for free. Something they won't lose any sleep over "giving away for free."

Really? Really? Smartphones didn't get a price increase? Basic house electronics got price increase. What the hell you are blabbing about?
Don't think so.

Apple launching all sorts of budget devices, companies like Samsung and Google have held their phone prices.

Monitors have dropped back down toto pre-covid prices in the UK. Premium OLED and Mini-LED TVs from companies like LG are now in the £600-£800 range compared to £1k plus for base models 2 years ago.

E-readers, tablets, laptops - all back to very decent pricing now after a mad couple of years.

Can someone explain what led to this price increase? Ram shortage or Tarrifs or ongoing war? The price was already increased from $499 to $549.
Mostly chip shortage. It's affecting everyone. That snot just ram it's also nand flash.

The ongoing war doesn't help much, cHse oil prices are spiking .. and that affects EVERYTHING.

Wafer cost went up. RAM cost went up. SSD cost went up. Inflation drove up materials, labor and manufacturing cost in general.

it's a shit show all around. I also can't help but think that Sony is using this opportunity to make the hardware a bit more profitable as well.

Nishino has flat out said hardware margins need to increase. I was expecting a price increase for new launches but with this, anything seems to be on the table. I don't see how this ends well - most people are not going to shell out.

Not that Sony cares, if anything higher margins with less volume is preferable for them now. The bottom would need to fall out of the market for them to reverse this. I get this feeling the wheels are already in motion and whatever new once in a lifetime global economic crisis this turns out to be cannot be stopped.

Greedy part is making this normal, after the situation becomes normal.

Look at covid pre and after prices.

I wish I was being snarky. I'm actually serious. And I'm not speaking just about Playstation, but the whole system of gaming. But that's only if these prices become the new norm. Netflix just announced a 10% price increase yesterday too. Something has to give. Every company is annoucing record profits, while at the same time income inequality has reached an all-time modern high.

Something has to give! At these price points (assuming Nintendo raises the price of the Switch 2 to $500), not only are you going to shrink the pie........but you're also cutting into how much the whales can also spend.

For all the people making these posts like "So glad I got my Pro, RAM, GPU etc. when I did!", this is going to effect you too. Publishers aren't going to all of a sudden start catering more to the minority of customers, they want to cast as wide of a net as possible.

I expect they will actually start to price gouge the people that have higher end hardware. Want that Pro patch or DLSS5? You pay a premium for it.

I'm starting to think the global elites are noticing the same patterns and are in a "get while you can" mode. There's ZERO reason for me to believe they think this is normal and okay. They have to know this isn't sustainable.

Inevitable, i think is going to happen when the Switch 2 reach 30 million.

At this pace......maybe before they hit 25 million!

IT'S ALL OVER!!!! :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The PS6 minimum price will now be $1,000. Gaming is screwed. No way the system can survive these price hikes. It's literally no possible.
Agreed.

I just can't see people paying these prices this late in the generation for ps5. It's momentum is coming to a stop.

A ps6 at £1000 is going to be for a small amount of people, myself included.
But there's no way normal people are paying that to play the odd call of duty and FIFA.
Gaming is now too expensive for the casual

I'd love for Nintendo to put out a recommitment to Switch 1 games and production to still keep a cheaper gaming alternative in the mix for years to come. There is STILL a market for a $200 Lite and I bet it becomes more and more attractive as this year marches on.

I can't wrap my head around it.

Did the heads of Sony go, "Oh, you know what would be a good idea? Let's raise the price from £450 to £900 in the space of 6 years. That will keep our audience happy, and it will no doubt keep them coming back."

Who honestly makes these decisions? This is obviously going to get hated by the vast majority of the general audience, and I do not doubt that the vast majority will not be buying a PS6 at launch.

Combination of Trump tarrifs, AI memory crisis created by Sam Altman and the current oil and natural gas price hikes from the Iran war. Thats whats causing all this. I dont think they have much of an option at this point. Sales are going to go down for sure

Ai boom and robotics evolution. Migjt take 2 to 3 years more before the Ai peak, so lets wait next gen late 2028 or better yet 2029.

If the PS6 ends up being a 1000 dollars that money is going towards a gaming laptop that I can work and game on. 1000 dollars plus services is where I tap out on consoles.
