Sony hikes up PS5 pricing in April: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99 PS5 Pro – $899.99, Portal $249.99

Well this new higher price will get the usual big discounts the only difference the discount price will be higher then the old one.

I'm very curious if they'll do a holiday discount post GTA VI. There will be millions who will buy a ps5 no matter what and they could milk them easily here. It used to be late gen adopters weren't very profitable for Sony buying consoles at rock bottom prices, not buying as many games etc. Now it's very profitable.
If its just 100 dollars, then its pointless. It has to be around 200 to 300 dollar discount for both ps5 and ps5 pro

AI has nothing to do with any of this, you can thank people thinking that it's due to AI though.

Do you happen to work for OpenAI or Nvidia?

And how many PS5s would they sell assuming that happens?

I was accused of spreading FUD when I brought this up in another thread but I will say it again, I highly doubt PS6 launches next year unless things change a lot

There just NO way Sony can release a PS6 in 2027 giving these prices. At this point it'll be financial malpractice. They have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders. A $1,000 PS6 would be a nightmare for everyone. Sony and their shareholders included.

That's why i think that Sony is in transition mode already. Everything is fucked up. We are in a wolrd that a new consoles priced at 700 is going to look like a bargain.
They have to manufacture 20m more PS5s for the remaining of this year and next year before winding down PS5 production and increasing PS6 production. And I don't think they will burn through this stock till end of 2028.

So basically PS5 sales will be reduced big time.

Cross gen games next gen are going to be permanent aren't they

It's 2026 and we're still getting PS4 cross-gen games.

Next year we're supposed to get PS6.

Yeah .. we're still gonna get PS4 games, at least from some smaller Japanese devs, all the way to 2030.

I'm contemplating grabbing one more Switch 2 before the price goes up for my 13 year old. $450 is sounding like a bargain these days.

Don't play into Sony's marketing.

The pauper digital console isn't the base. Which makes the new pricing even worse.

Do you really think Sony will only make 20m more PS5s in 2026 and 2027 combined?

No it's not. PC components are expensive as ever!
I don't care because I can do/use them for so many more things. If you are getting a PC to primarily play, sure it's bad but I use my PC for academic work, professional work as well as gaming and in general computing/browsing/video calls etc. A console is just a console, that's it.

A top end PC is very expensive but to build one which will give you similar perf. that of a PS5 Pro is not that expensive at all. I mean ok it depends on your income but for me, I'm fine spending a few thousands ( every few years ) on a good build which I use most of my time - work, study or leisure. The PC pays for itself in less than a few months.

Well, we knew the other shoe would drop at some point when hardware prices started to rapidly increase.
That said, the increase is hefty af and doesn't bode well for the PS6 launch price.

Sony 4d chess.

PS5 Pro is the PS6.......

PS6 Pro in 2030 or beyond
Well hopefully they can squeeze more power from ps5 pro and make it future proof. Pssr 2.0 is impressive but I hope there is pssr 3.0, maybe add frame gen and path tracing capability to ps5 pro. If they can do that then, summer 2030 launch for ps6 is okay.

I retain what I said. They didn't expect GTA to took that long, they 100% want farm that sweet GTA money. No way they gonna launch PS6 that soon.

We have zero clue about that…

People said consoles wouldn't get impacted by this.

Cloud gaming prices will also increase soon i believe.

I meant there will be 0 ps6 exclusives for many years, esp now since they aren't releasing on pc

there's been wars including Middle Eastern countries for the last 4 decades and no console price prior to this gen has been impacted.
The truth is previously Sony and Microsoft knew there was a ceiling to console prices and they took full advantage of the madness from covid onwards to bake in these ridiculous hikes and set a new norm price wise.

You and that poster are forgetting one mayor thing, Straight of Hormuz. Middle Eastern countries were at war for few decades and for the 1st time in 50 years Hormuz has now been closed again for 2 weeks and everything went up significantly, oil especially and caused a domino effect everywhere

PS5 will be supported much longer than ps4 was. No reason not to.

Sony should be selling 30-35 million PS5s in 2026 and 2027. If they can only sell a measly 20m it's OVER!

No, I'm just calling it how it is. (Kinda hard working for any of those living in Moscow right now.)

But you are objectively wrong. This isn't really a debate. Everyone knows the core cost of RAM has gone up at a stupid high rate.

At those prices, it would be a miracle to sell that much.

Sony and Playstation is in trouble if they can't sell 20 million PS5s in 2 years combined. I swear the whole thing will crash if it's gotten that bad. Especially when you consider GTA6 is coming out at the end of 2026.

I based my numbers simply on PS5 usual sales of ~16m at this stage (normal prices). After increase I expect the sales will be around 12m 2026 and around 8m 2027..and whatever is remaining in the stock will carry PS5 during PS6 days, so add 5m to that.

Consoles used to get to the point where MILFs would impulse buy them for their kids after this many years on the market. Now they get more expensive, along with everything you need to buy that isn't a luxury item.

Traditional gaming as we know it is gonna be a hobby for 40 year old boomers and rich kids. They will try to push subs and cloud gaming even more. Kids already just want to play roblox, minecraft, five nights at freddies, etc. They can do that on their tablets and laptops they already have for school.

So as those kids grow into the 18-35 target demographic they are not gonna give a fuck about Kratos or Mario.

Yeah, people that have no idea about this stuff. They thought PS5/Pro is not using RAM and NAND memory (or that Sony can get better memory prices than Apple/Google/MS etc.)...

Lots of comments in this thread are aging like milk in the sahara. You might get a kick out of people replying specifically to yourself Bojji Bojji 🤭

That's a good estimation indeed.

Ok so in a month when the straight of Hormuz is operating as normal and everything stabilises price wise the cost of the PS5 will drop by £100 of course.

Not because of AI but because of people who believed in this and were ready to pay 5X the prices cause "AI AI AI AI AI".
RAM prices will probably be down to where they were by the end of this year already.

I just find it funny how when it comes to price hikes Sony is always the first one but they come late at everything else. Sadly this just means other companies will follow suit soon.
