Sony hikes up PS5 pricing in April: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99 PS5 Pro – $899.99, Portal $249.99

Fuck it. I pulled the trigger. Snagged me a pro just now on Amazon, these prices are not gonna get any better. If you're on the fence? It's do or die right now.

That won't magically materialize 800 bucks in the hand of some kid or his parents.

Remember it's the console plus 80 bucks for one game.
Like i said… Dropping $50 or $100 bucks for the Base PS5 at the GTA6 launch is going to look like the second coming of Jesus. Also a Wolverine bundle.

There just NO way Sony can release a PS6 in 2027 giving these prices. At this point it'll be financial malpractice. They have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders. A $1,000 PS6 would be a nightmare for everyone. Sony and their shareholders included.
Has there been any precedence for Sony suddenly holding back on a product release because it would be too expensive? What guarantee is there that prices would come down at all? Clearly the PS5 is no indication of that. Every day that thing sits on the sidelines, it's millions of dollars in R&D that is unrecovered, weighing down their balance sheets. If cost is the only issue, they will release it with the requisite markup and adjust sales expectations. If component supply itself becomes an issue, that's a whole different matter.

They already sold 90M, is not going to be the end of the world. A brand new PS6 for 2027 is going to keep those profits incoming.

The death that I'm talking about doesn't happen in a year or two. IF.....BIG IF......these prices are the new normal, I'm saying this is the beginning of the end.

Yeah, people that have no idea about this stuff. They thought PS5/Pro is not using RAM and NAND memory (or that Sony can get better memory prices than Apple/Google/MS etc.)...
I think ps5 pro sold unexpectedly, so well that there stock of ram and rand for manufacturing, had run out. Same with there base ps5, so called reserved ram and nand stock depleted.

They made more profits this gen than PS4 and PS3 combined with less games and STILL isn't enough lol. Either that or they're getting people ready for the eye watering PS6 price in the future.

Wafer cost went up. RAM cost went up. SSD cost went up. Inflation drove up materials, labor and manufacturing cost in general.

it's a shit show all around. I also can't help but think that Sony is using this opportunity to make the hardware a bit more profitable as well.
And setting expectations for the launch of the ps6 next year.

My guess continues to be that the ps6 price will be whatever the price of the ps5pro is at the time. Maybe they subside to 799... maybe.

They should just push this gen all the way trough 2030. Absolutely no need for new hardware next year.

Just watch Sony dropping $50 for the base PS5 at the GTA6 launch and some people celebrating that as the second coming of christ.

No <insert favorite brand> is immune to this.

You can only stockpile so much... It was obvious that RAM bought in mid 2025 prices will soon run out (they produce millions of consoles/year).

All these price hikes, seeing the direction the majority of gaming is going down, man. I just don't know if I even want to keep going on with this hobby. I can afford it, but it's kind of the principle of it.

No precedence at all. But we'd all be lying to ourselves if we wanna act like what's happening today is normal. It's not 2006 or 2013. It's All Happening and none of it is good.

The elephant in the room which you aren't addressing is that even when previous hikes have been blamed on global issues they have never come back down afterwards once the issues no longer exist.

Oh, i'm addressing it. Trump Tarrifs happened last year. Guess what happened? Everything went up globally and trade wars are lasting till this day.

OK. According to initial plans, War in Ukraine should have finished in 3 days. It didn't.

These are strange strange times!
Very strange… never seen console prices increase over time instead of decreasing.

Really makes you wonder is the economy that bad because this move isn't going to help Sony get more console owners so it shows how desperate they are to make an extra buck to make up for losses.

PlayStation blog must have been hacked. I've been assured that Sony would never raise prices like this. If real, Sony is just doing it so they can offer gamers a $399 PS6 that blows the doors off a 5 Pro

These price increases are absolutely insane. What the hell is going on.

No disagreement there. Everything is FUBAR for sure...

It's a great console imo. You should also get the disc drive so you have options. And yeah buying it at this price vs 900 is a no brainer.

Ps Plus next?

What the hell is the point of releasing the ps6 next year? Adoption rates are going to be brutal after the rush of the early 1st adopters is over, look at the switch2 as proof of that vs price sensitivity. 1st party cross gen going to last to next decade either way at this point.

I've accepted that gaming as we knew it is dying. Not today or tomorrow but in 20 or 30 years. Kids growing up today mostly won't have a console and when they're old enough to afford one they won't care.

Doesn't matter. I will just continue with what i pretty much do anyway: Play old games same as i watch old movies and buy new hardware occasionally. Doesn't bother me anymore.

It probably makes no sense for Sony to keep losing money for a six year old console that is about to be replaced, and is also mature enough to sustain a very large install base and kick into ~100M by late 2027 (RIP 120M dream). PS6 is very likely where Sony will take THE huge hit.
But also, they will still be losing A LOT of money with the Japan only PS5 that not only was already being subsidized last year, but is accordingly more expensive to produce today, and is NOT having any price increases.
