I usually defend Moores Law is Dead but he was saying Sonys price was set for a while. I think he said end of 2027. Yeahhhh. No.

I wouldn't put it past Sony to have preemptively raised the price so they can get extra profits.

Honestly I see console sales coming to a screeching halt.

Maybe Sony's plan is to raise prices and then lower them slightly to get a sales boost.

Base PS5, Switch 2, PC, Helix, cellphone games, handhelds, etc. With the increased price everything else will become competition. If they don't have compelling exclusives people will stick with their PS5s and whatever else is out there. No one is going to pay premium for a console without exclusives.
Where's the peer console, launching in the same price point, in the same market? No, we aren't talking about PC's, PC/console hybrids, or handhelds. I mean a high powered console, that sits under your TV/monitor. Where is that next gen? It doesn't exist. It's PS6 or bust. Helix is a PC hybrid, that will be at least a grand.

Man, these shills are desperate to see Sony repeat every single mistake Microsoft made.

How is it possible that these two same people (both guys I like in the video game podcasting space BTW) seem to be having totally different reactions 2 years apart? And why did Kahlief use MLB The Show as an example of Sony going the 3rd party route?

So on one had MS Xbox should do exclusives in 2024. But in 2026, Sony shouldn't do exclusives? HUH?!

All of that is irrelevant. If they launch an expensive console without exclusives people will start looking for alternatives. It doesn't matter if the alternative means sticking with hybrids or handheld PCs or sticking with their Switch 2 or PS5, they just won't buy the new console. Exclusives are important especially when you are trying to convince customers to pay more for a product than they are used to.

Please tell me this is the same friend of yours that was playing Freedom Fighters exclusively? And that he is still playing it?
Same friend, but he is now playing Sudden Strike 4 and has been playing it for over a year. He's trying to get every star on every single mission, it's insane. And he's turned down multiple games, multiple opportunities to buy new consoles, to continue to play this same game.

Sony is pricing themselves out of their own market.

Anyone who could afford at those prices already purchased one by now, and all those still gaming on a PS4 and were hoping for this generation to get cheaper are just screwed.

This is not how you get people to jump on PS5 now who haven't yet. They are just going to continue to stick with their PS4 consoles.
Many already have base ps5 except Japan,. But it turned off so many potential ps5 pro customers with this new prices.

Oh wow. Well he must be playing that game on relatively modern hardware.

Never been so glad to have upgraded to PS5 Pro the month it launched. Got the disc drive too for full versatility.

This is the weekend to spend those tax refunds to get in on PS5 before these new prices go into effect!

Xbox One(not One X/S, Xbox One). He originally had it for PS4, played it for months, his save got corrupted. Then bought it again on an Xbox and started from scratch. You could put a brand new PS5 in front of him with 10 new games, he'd play one for 5 minutes, then go back to Sudden Strike 4.

Ha, your friend takes the idea of comfort games to the extreme.
Got to love that he's rocking an OG VHS player Xbox One as well! :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Maybe Nvidias pricing has desensitized me to this over the years, but 21 pages seems like an overreaction to a rather small price increase.

Yeah, I think the difference is that this sort of price increase, several years after release, is unprecedented for consoles. afaik.

Man you should visit the Xbox threads

Not all that different.

That 20% discount voucher on top of the sales price that I got from Very UK on the pro makes it an actual bargain. Holy shit. I paid like 650 for a pro with disk drive, just checked.

Wild. Pro was already hard for me to justify. Can afford it but that $1k price tag... I was holding out but will remain holding unless gta is waaaay better on pro.

Why are you stating this like it's their choice???
Because it was their choice. Was it the obvious choice? Yes. But they aren't excused from corporate greed and backlash just because the economy is bad. I don't get to charge my place of work more money for my employment because of the economy.

Excuse me while I call out the billion dollar corporation for constant price increases despite record profits every year.

I bought every Playstation Day 1 since 2007

Never understood the reason to wait for a price drop that might never happen
You never understood the logic of getting the console for a lower price with better games? Every PlayStation in history dropped in price over time. This is a first where the price increases. You could have bought a PS3 in late 2006 for $600 and get a handful of options such as Heavenly Sword or waited until 2010 and get it for $400 along with options like GOWIII, Uncharted II, Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, etc. In this case, waiting was a much smarter choice.

That is kinda crazy cause I was hoping to one day get a ps5 cause the eventual price drops that happen. Turns out, this generation was the first to completely invert this lol

Can't wait for all the posts in the future about how the ps5 would have outsold the PS4 at some point if it wasn't for those pesky price increases and memory shortages.

Seriously though. Where does this price the ps5 Vs the Series X and S now?

Tax refund? Go fix your W2 and stop giving the government an interest free loan every year.

If you think the Steam Machine is gonna be $700 LOL
When the PS5 was still $500, sure.

I was actually voting $600, with the price hikes I could see it being $800. That doesn't look as crazy versus a $650 PS5.

$650 XSX, $400 XSS (512GB)

So Sony is matching their PS5 with BluRay drive to the XSX.

This whole industry right now:

No way, it's all just #SonyToo. Sonys has memory contracts for ages. They can keep the price low. None of this is real!

Seriously though, we all knew this was coming. It's insane right now. Consoles are now like new phones etc

The writing was on the wall last gen. Sony only did one price drop on PS4--from $399.99 to $299.99--and that was only done with the launch of the PS4 Pro in order to make it more attractive. Xbox only lowered the price of XB1 by abandoning Kinect and trying to salvage the gen by pricematching Sony.

The era of "wait more, pay less" is over and is extremely unlikely to ever return. We are now moving into an era where average consumers are being priced out of gaming. I predict titles like Roblox and Fortnite will continue to grow in popularity as people can play them just fine on aging hardware. The current pricing trends are simply not sustainable for mass market devices.

The difference between the Black Friday sale price just a few months ago and these prices are like $300 CAD. It's crazy.

They designed this console two years ago and you say they didn't plan to release it in 2027? Give me a break...

If they delay it, it will be 6-12 months, not to fucking 2030 lol.

Agree. Anyone who thinks the PS6 is releasing in 2030 is a clown, no offense.

For $1,100 CAD, you can buy an LG B5 55" OLED right now at Best Buy or Costco. Same one is at Amazon for $1,000.

It's not going to crash - but it will likely consolidate around the people with money to spend.

The number of people with disposable income is shrinking rapidly. A recent report came out that suggested at least 20% of the UK population are living in poverty. With everything going up in price at such a rapid rate, video games are a luxury that most people just can't afford.

If gaming becomes a hobby only for those with the money to spend, that means less gamer and therefore less games being purchased. That sounds like a disaster for a lot of publishers and developers.

If these prices stick around......YES!

I could actually see it happening.

I think we'll see a push into cloud gaming, but that push will come from Sony and Microsoft. Can't afford a console at a four figure sum? No problem. Just sign up to stream your games via the cloud. Of course, you would still need to purchase your games, but if you can't afford the hardware then you'll have to pay a monthly fee to stream them. And since the hardware will be expensive, a lot of people will be priced out.

If you've already built up a vast digital library but can't afford the next PS or Xbox, the cloud might be the only way you'll be able to access your games.

If the choice next generation is that or a console that costs over a grand, then I'd personally rather not bother at all.
