Sony hikes up PS5 pricing in April: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99 PS5 Pro – $899.99, Portal $249.99

It isn't loading.

You can play pretty much anything on the kit I showed:

Good, a poor pc build is still more expensive than a base ps5

Sony really thinks they're in control huh?

Cheap android tablets will rule the roost. Just as Sony killed their mobile push 🤪

If there isn't a RAM/NAND price collapse, do you have a guess how much the PS6 will cost in 2027?

Before I was thinking $699 but I don't even know if that's possible without Sony losing too much money on each console.
My current BOM estimate for PS6 is ~$760, so I would say $699 is still possible with a reasonable subsidy. The question is if Sony will even bother now that Xbox is not direct competition anymore.

Can someone explain what led to this price increase? Ram shortage or Tarrifs or ongoing war? The price was already increased from $499 to $549.

AI/RAM = is The biggest factor by far.

Tariffs= A bit but not a huge factor. The Supreme Court shot down tariffs being enacted by using emergency declarations, but the Trump Administration was able to do a universal 10% tariff and some other targeted tariffs of 25% based on other statutes passed by Congress in the 1930s, 60s, and 70s. Those continue through July but in many cases are lower than before the SC ruling. However, the current tariffs will be more difficult to strike down by the Judicial branch.

Iran war= Probably a much bigger factor by summer if oil is still high.

Did the trade in, $350 for a launch PS5 for the upgrade just made sense when considering the alternative. Normally I wouldn't do any business at Gamestop but they had the best deal plus I didn't have to deal with FB marketplace.

Sounds like Gamestop did gangbusters today on hardware sales. The shop I traded in at sold five Pros today.

It is, but don't spread lies about RAM alone being more expensive.

And 600-650$ entry console is not cheap.

Last two years on BF you could get a base digital ps5 for 450$ with some goodies in Canada, it's really cheap

Why would they do a subsidy for ps6 when they aren't doing one for ps5

Sounds like it will be 800 at the best case

They did for PS5 for four years straight. There is a point where it makes no sense to keep losing money on aging hardware right before you need to do exactly that with a new generation.

I only care about getting the most out of my box, the real reason behind these insane hikes is there's a huge portion of society who've been earning their income way easier than before and these mf wants to normalize these things.

I already thought the pro was a rip off at the original $700 USD price. That shit was like $1100 Canadian after tax and those mother fuckers still wanted $100 for the disk drive. Now it's going to be like $1400 which is firmly into PC territory, even with the price hikes. At that point you might as well spend the extra $600 or so for a full ass PC.

Maybe it's a good thing Sony sucks now. Without all the niche games like Gravity Rush, Last Guardian, etc I won't have a reason to buy a PS6.

Unsustainable prices.

Consoles are obviously more technologically complex than they've ever been, but they're still entertainment toys. They're not more important to people than groceries, child tutoring, home repairs, family trips etc.

GTA6 is the only bright spot for their hardware business in 2026. Not good.

If the PS6 BOM is $760 with 30–32 GB of VRAM, does that mean Sony is making about $200 in profit on the PS5 Pro after this price increase? Any guesses on the current PS5 BOM after the price increase?

Are there any tariff issues that add to it? If so, do you have an estimate what additional costs that'd be?

Absolutely, Even 32gb is significantly cheaper than a PS5. 32gb of the exact ram you linked is $360 on Amazon. Still crazy overpriced, but not nearly as unreasonable as they are claiming.

People can argue about what's "cheaper" or not, but the value proposition of consoles is gone. When you are pushing $700-900 for consoles, it's just smarter to just buy a PC. The entire reason consoles make sense is that they have been an extremely cheaper option to PC that still allowed acceptable performance. Without that, what's the point?

This is wrong, and they continued to report losses in hardware (in non-discount periods) all the way to 2024.

Actually, digital one was sold at loss, disc based wasn't already during Summer 2021. That was said by Totoki. Anyway, economical situation changed significantly in last 3 years. Now i dunno.

I don't know how you justify dropping 1k on old ass hardware. And steam machine will be the same. Where the fk is that new Xbox already.

Nice, I wasn't going to get a pro in the first place. Now I'm even more not getting one.
Way too expensive for a console. Even more retarded for a regular one given how old it is.

lol, in Australia the PS5 has been increased to $1000 and the Pro has gone up to $1400. Crazy stuff.

Aussie getting hosed.

Canada getting a currency exchange favour. Pro $900 US should be $1,250 CDN at real exchange rates. But it's only $1,100 CDN here. A 17% currency discount.

At $1,100 CDN that'd be the same converted to about $1,150 Aussie $.

Yup.

And like every gen, the console maker still focuses on selling the old gen console for years until it finally fizzles out.

And if chip prices dont come down, then PS5 (disc or digital) will be $600-650, Pro $900, and PS6 $1,000 minimum. Add another $50-100 for a model that has a disc drive.
To launch a new platform I believe they would take some loss for a little while but also they would kill PS5 Pro right off the bat and start slowing down production of PS5 to a minimum as soon as they can as it makes no sense to pay lots of money to buy components there is scarcity of (so supply PS6 more and drive its cost down else you waste billions in R&D and marketing).

This is exactly what I did back in November 2024. Traded in my launch disc PS5 at Gamestop and bought a PS5 Pro. I had already gotten a disc drive for it online. Including the disc drive it cost me about $200 to upgrade out-of-pocket since I got the launch $699.99 price point for the Pro. (Trade in and early Christmas present mitigating the amount I needed to put into it).

At the time I was happy with the deal but wondered a bit it it was worth it. As I have watched all models of consoles including PS5 skyrocket in price throughout 2025 and into 2026, I feel that it was a very prescient thing that I did the upgrade early.

With the market conditions the way that they are, either Sony won't be launching the PS6 until the end of the decade, or they will release it by the end of 2028 and it will be so prohibitively expensive it will be the first PlayStation in decades I don't get on launch day. Given the absurd length of cross-gen periods I will be content with my PS5 Pro for a considerable time--and an "on schedule" arrival of PS6 runs a high risk of the console being outright stillborn IMO.

It's just one of those times where selling or trading in a console at the right time gets you a good deal. Hindsight 20/20, but anyone buying or trading early scored.

Covid was another time. Everyone is buying stuff stuck at home, I was able to sell my One X with an extra gamepad and some old shitty games (many were already on GP too) for $450 CDN. I'll take it. Then got a Series X for $600.

I checked and stores are selling new consoles for $720 used ones $700! I checked Ebay and almost everyone is selling their used SX for on avg about $550. $600-700+ if there's some games or whatever included.

So I could dump my SX I got in early 2021 for $550 (includes mint condition box too which might even make it higher value), though I paid $600 + tax. Nuts. lol

I wonder whether beyond a certain price point the warranty itself starts to give people a headache. Sony only offers a one year warranty on the PlayStation and these are getting expensive enough that it really starts to hurt when they break early.

Dont be to sure. Price hike incoming.

Looking back, to be honest what is dissapointing is they made ps5 pro more expensive just when interest went sky high and more potential buyers because it is about to get better with pssr 2.0 updates and more great games that will look better on ps5 pro. It could been forgivable if the base ps5 price was the only inncrease and Ps5 pro remained the same or lessen the price a bit

The prices for phones and tablets is also rising.

Good call. I just work with gamepass and buy the games that I like when they are on sale. To me a game is never worth more than 50 bucks anyway. I can't even remember the last time I bought a game the same day it came out. Between my back log, sales and GPU there is no need to, dat and date buy anything. Plus sales on Xbox and steam happen all the time.

Actually nah I bought toaplan shoot 'em up collections day and date on Xbox. Same with all the hamster Arcade archives. But those games are all like 7 bucks a pop. Ive bought all the neo geo, capcon and sega stuff on Xbox and that stuff keeps me busy as far as games go.
Yep I just buy games when on sale now even if it's a few years after they come out, got more than enough to be playing

These prices are ridiculous especially considering how old the technology is for the PS5. You still probably need a disc drive for the PS5 Pro, PS Plus, a game or two and maybe even a stand? If you're paying that much, why not just wait for the PS6 which is most likely backwards compatible? Surely the PS6 will be even more expensive, but at least you're getting new, presumably more powerful technology.

Steve Holt Steve Holt do you want to prove me wrong?

All I need from you and mister shill or which ever other Sony fans want to try and say that pc component pricing wasn't flat or even declining in the first 9 months of 2025 until the ramapocalypse.

I just need some receipts from you guys and then we can move on.

Ps5 is now 70 pounds more than a series x in the UK and almost double the price of a series s.

That's fucking mental considering the size of the series x Apu etc and the supposed BOM cost difference.

I was thinking about this, actually. A company like Rockstar had to be anticipating at mimimum a 150m combined PS5/XBox Series install base by the time GTA6 launches. I imagine for the most part, Sony had held up their end but Microsoft sure as hell hasn't. Makes me wonder if they're going to push out a PC version sooner than they otherwise would have.

We're getting price increases next week though. For some reason, Canada didn't get affected by price hikes. The PS5 Pro is still $959 CAD, which translates to $690 USD and this has been the price since launch. It didn't go up at all.

9iKez3K.png

That's $373 USD, even cheaper than it was back in late 2020 in the US. It won't last though, those are our new prices:

  • Standard PS5 — $819.99 (previously $649.99)
  • Digital PS5 — $749.99 (previously $579.99)
  • PS5 Pro — $1099.99 (previously $959.99)
  • PS Portal — $319.99 (previously $269.99)
It is, but don't spread lies about RAM alone being more expensive.

And 600-650$ entry console is not cheap.
It's true in Canada. A decent kit of RAM is the same price as a PS5. You can go for a slower and cheaper set though since you probably won't get much out of a 6000 MT/s 30 CL kit on an entry-level machine. You can easily get the same performance with 5600 or less and stick with AM4/5 that aren't sensitive to memory timings and speeds with low-end CPUs.
