Sony hikes up PS5 pricing in April: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99 PS5 Pro – $899.99, Portal $249.99

I was thinking about this, actually. A company like Rockstar had to be anticipating at mimimum a 150m combined PS5/XBox Series install base by the time GTA6 launches. I imagine for the most part, Sony had held up their end but Microsoft sure as hell hasn't. Makes me wonder if they're going to push out a PC version sooner than they otherwise would have.
Sony is doing this because o GTA6, they know the game will sell gangbusters soo they incresead the price of the console..easy money

I doubt that. There is a point where you're putting too much friction between the customer and purchasing the system. But, what you're saying wasn't addressing my main point. What I'm saying is I suspect Rockstar was banking on a larger console install base for GTA6, but Xbox sales flatlined.

I remember being an adult during the Financial Crisis of 2008 and console prices still managed to go down in price over time.

Everything is just corporate greed. Ever since the late 2010s the corporate playbook has changed.

Now that I've thought about this longer, this is great news. It prices out the blue hair activists which means studios can stop pretending the "modern audience" exists.

Looks like casuals may be grabbing a Series S for GTA VI this holiday.

They wont even if xss was bundled with a blowjob xD

It's not worth it because you have to buy the game digitally. I'd get a used XSX or PS5 plus the disc version of the game and then sell both again afterward. Cheaper and better.
I do agree especially for gamers looking to play the story mode, hopefully they pick the better/cheaper options.

Its sad to say but GTA Online is still popular on the Xbox One & PS4 & the big reason is kids/teens.
I can see the Series S being sold like crazy so they can play the next GTA Online because gamers still playing on ps4s & xbox ones don't care about better, they just want to play it.

All I need from you and mister shill or which ever other Sony fans want to try and say that pc component pricing wasn't flat or even declining in the first 9 months of 2025 until the ramapocalypse.

PC components have skyrocketed recently, to say the opposite is wild, they haven't been stable for a long time. Anyone who is following the recent trends and world economy can see the cause of that too. Not sure why you think the situation is stable.. only getting worse.

make no mistake, sony is a greedy bitch but they understand how to bully xbox like no other. Best believe they will have some holiday promo to bring down the price around GTA6, every potential GTA buyer is a goldmine waiting to be exploited...sony aint about to give up the milk just because the cow is trying to run away

I bIought a ps5 slim with disc drive just a couple months ago to play Death Stranding 2. Might just sell it now bc not much on the horizon for me besides GTA6.

I'm sitting in the tire shop and the news just reported on the PS5 price increases. They only reported the raw increase price and not the new MSRP, probably to hide the sticker shock. Corporate media gonna obfuscate I guess.

Plenty of used ps5s and ps5 pros available in the UK. Just advise people to buy used with a good guarantee and buy second hand games after the PSN pricing mess. That's the only way Sony will feel any of this.

My current BOM estimate for PS6 is ~$760, so I would say $699 is still possible with a reasonable subsidy. The question is if Sony will even bother now that Xbox is not direct competition anymore.

So you're telling me the BOM for a ps6 with bleeding edge technology is hundreds of dollars cheaper than the ps5 pro?

Sorry man I just dont see it... subsidy or not i feel like Sony is aiming for 900 or more for ps6 and raising prices on current Gen is just to get everyone comfortable w spending more on the ps6. Or at least as much as the ps5 pro which will be adjust down once ps6 releases.

If they really put out ps6 at 699 it would just be a huge kick in the teeth to customers showing that these price hikes weren't justified and they were taking advantage of consumers.

I read something over here: that we're paying Marathon's flop, and I think that's totally correct.
For those who say consoles are still cheaper, you all seem to forget that we have to pay to play online.

This is wrong, and they continued to report losses in hardware (in non-discount periods) all the way to 2024.
This isnt true! Sony actually started making a profit on the PS5 within the first 9 months!! The only times they have made losses on hardware has been during some seasons where they sell them at a discount. So sometimes they take a loss when they sell at a discount and other times its break even. Besides that ever since 2021 Sony makes a profit whenever it sells a PS5 at MSRP.

That still gets you in the ecosystem. The way Sony feels this is if you skip PS5 and start playing games on your phone or other devices. The thing I hate most about this is they are really pushing lower-mid income people out of console gaming. I hope it bites them in the ass hard. I don't just mean Sony, I mean the whole industry. Gaming is a lot less about fun these days and more about unrealistic budgets and expectations.

Obvious this was coming after the temporary drop for a few months recently.

They can afford to do this though with GTA6 coming soon, and absolutely zero competition from Microsoft on the hardware front.
Still blaming Microsoft for Sony trying to make revenue for it's investors

Lets see how "good guy" Valve navigate these market conditions before jumping to conclusions about how greedy Sony are being!

They did for PS5 for four years straight. There is a point where it makes no sense to keep losing money on aging hardware right before you need to do exactly that with a new generation.

But to achieve 600$ price with PS6 next year - they will have to do massive price decreases on PS5 and PS5 Pro. They might actually start to lose money on them... again.

I don't see current day Sony subsidizing three consoles at the same time (maybe even 4 with Portable).

I remember being an adult during the Financial Crisis of 2008 and console prices still managed to go down in price over time.

Everything is just corporate greed. Ever since the late 2010s the corporate playbook has changed.

I remember it too. I also remember that there wasn't a stupid AI bubble that was being fueled by stupid amounts of investment that created a shortage for the specific parts necessary for releasing a console.

Just to put things into perspective, in 2024, I purchased an 8tb WD Black SSD for my PS5 from Amazon. It was quite the splurge at $610.

Today, that SSD on Amazon is $1,285 marked down from fucking $3,449!

Cleary that 3000 plus amount is garbage, but the other price is realistically what we're looking at. That's 100% more. There is greed that Sony is downstream from.

And I can't even be mad at the greed of parts suppliers. Demand is outpacing supply. Only a fool wouldn't take advantage of that environment.

With three‑quarters of its capital locked in low‑ROIC mature segments, a CEO unwilling to reallocate resources, and a promise of outsized shareholder returns, Sony is effectively left with only one lever: aggressive profit‑seeking through price hikes and deep cost cutting in its crown jewel.

And yes, hardware costs have risen significantly, but software and subscription revenues have doubled over the same period, more than offsetting the pressure.

Make no mistake: Sony is targeting truly astronomical gaming profits in FY26

Totoki is under pressure, and he knows that a price hike—combined with the momentum from GTA and the new Spider-Man movie—is his strongest play to calm investor concerns.

Sony is not selling PS6 for less or same as PS5 or Pro. It'll be more. Why would they sell PS6 for less than last gen?

No differernt than other gens. The new product is better and sells for more than the last gen product. And the way chip prices are, no consoles are going to getting those juicy 50% off bargain binning like way back. I remember seeing PS4 and Xbox One for $200. And even crazier were older gens you'd get them for $100 when the new systems would be coming out. PS2 was crazy. I remember seeing their last slim model for $79.

Best hope for pricing is chips get cheaper and PS5 (with drive) gets back to $500. Pro goes back down too to $700. Then PS6 is $900-1000.

If prices dont come down, PS6 is $1,000+ easy if Pro is already at $900 US.

There is absolutely no way in hell that Sony will sell PS6 at $900 - $1000. It is not happening. $799 tops, you can quote me on that.

5 years into Nintendo GameCube (not even a Black Friday sale)

Those probably didn't even have the digital output port, so useless for modern gaming setups!

But seriously, those clearance sales for consoles are so over, very sad. I don't even think the Wii U ever went on clearance for a price under $250.
