They would've been gone for real without the ports. XB1 catastrophic staggered failure launch killed all hype for the brand and it affected everything and every decision. They needed the PC ports to have enough people playing their games, then moved to Steam to get more people in, studios still closed, and now they're on PS and NSW as well. It was necessary. You did see how it killed Xbox right?
Many on GAF were even saying they're moving to PC due to PlayStation games being released there.
Also, it's not like dedicated PS fans would move over to PC. It's mostly people like myself who barely use the console anyway, the loss for Sony is minimal, I haven't played anything since Astrobot.
And remember how many PS fans said they would play all Microsoft's games on PC. That was before they were on Steam. You think that actually happened? You think PS fans were buying games left and right on Microsoft Store? Nah, I don't think the majority of them ever had a PC or it was too lousy actually run anything, was mostly noise about Xbox no longer having "true exclusives".
So you should probably take things you hear about people moving from PS to PC with a healthy dose of salt too. It's not like moving from Xbox to PC. It's a bigger step and not an easy journey, you lose all your progress and purchases, it's a LOT more expensive nowadays, and there is added friction from dicey port quality. Many talk about it without actually doing it.
