If you're on a 5800x3d or older this is probably a good upgrade but I can't see it for anyone else unless you've got money to burn. My 7800x3d is doing great.
5800X3D owner here, why? Unless you insist on real high framerates (144Hz+) my CPU usage rarely goes over 50%

7900XT taps out on most modern stuff at 4K anywhere between 80-100 fps while my CPU still has plenty of headroom

My kind of cpu 😜

Indeed! For me, I'm targeting 4k 60 fps at whatever settings so even a mid CPU isn't going to bottleneck me. I've actually moved from a 9700x/5080 desktop to a mini PC with a Ryzen 7 8745HS mobile CPU and oculink eGPU for my 5080. Negligible difference for the games I'm playing. I benchmarked with Cyberpunk 2077 and Crimson Desert.

Now if I were an extreme frame rate guy like you....this setup would suck. lol

Heck I'm still perfectly happy with my Ryzen 7 3700X. 😎
Rocking a ryzen 7 5700x. I upgraded last year for $125 (was on a busted half working 3600) thing flies to me with 32gb ram and a 3060ti. Unless you render 3d, or audio what is one of these going to do for you taht a cheaper cpu wouldn't as far as gaming? For people on 4k (not me) wouldn't that be gpu that is the bottleneck?

CPU looks nice, but seems a bit late. It is probably best to wait for Zen 6 or get a better price on the original 9950x3d, unless the price difference is negligeble.

I have a 9950x3d and the only reason I would think to upgrade would be for the Zen 6 x3d version with 24cores (48 threads).

There's an element of diminishing returns, but X3D chips are a good percentage ahead of the non X3D models - between 15% to 30% usually. I agree outside of the X3D chips for gaming though.

After a good night sleep I'm going to buy one and sell it when zen 6 X3D launch

I'm weak and love new hardware

With taxes it's going to cost more then 1500$ CAD 😤😱
Still thinking of buying one but damn!!!!

OP updated

$899, same price as the PS5 Pro interestingly
I plan to just ride on with my 9800X3D but it will be interesting to see the benchmarks later this month...

Considering he has a 9950X3D, yes.
i have that too.

was just looking it up. looks like they are going up to 12 cores per chiplet. do you think AMD will release X3D (single 3d cache chiplet) and then an X3D2 or is it possible they'll just start putting the 3d cache on any double chiplet cpus?

guess i'll just wait then for the equivalent zen 6 replacement to the 9950X3D/2 :) thanks!!

Probably depends on how well the 9950X3D2 sells.

Look at how they've got you guys double dipping... I think they're going to:

1. Zen 6 regular chips come out - people upgrade because they're excited about 12 core CCDs.
2. 6-8 months later X3D chips come out - people upgrade because because these are the X3D chips that gamers want
3. 6 month slater the X3D2 Dual Edition chip comes out - people upgrade again because it's the best of the best

...at least if I were running a business to make as much money as possible, this is what I would do.

the rockstar strategy!

That's exactly what I was thinking haha
i get it. if it works and makes money then yeah they're gonna do it.

i upgraded from a 7950X3D to the 9950X3D. i know i shouldn't bother with the X3D2 cpu.

maybe will just wait for the "10950X3D" if they do a X3D2 version then whatever. by that time probably we'll be near Zen 7 or whatever and i'll be in the same position.

I'm sure it's going to take a while before it happen

Yes, AMD has a tendency to pace their CPU releases. For the X3D chis, they usually take 1 year, after the main CPU arch is released.
The 9800X3D was released earlier, only half a year after Zen5 released. But that was due to Intel was about to release the 200 CPU series, and AMD wanted to make sure they kept the lead.
With Zen6 X3D, it will probably depend on what Intel has prepared for the same period. Rumors say they are preparing a CPU that also has a large LLC.

About AMD's comitment to AM5:

"With AM4, we built a platform that made it easy for customers to upgrade their PC across multiple generations of processors. And this year, we celebrate its ten-year anniversary, supported by an expansive line of processors powering milions of systems around the world.

That same philisophy continues with socket AM5. Long-term platform support isn't just a marketing message for us, it's a commitment to protecting our customer's investments and giving enthusiasts a platform that can grow with them."

Jasck Huynh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Computing and Graphics at AMD

Maybe it's less of a framerate issue than you are not getting the true value and power of your hardware on a mobile CPU.

I could see how others might see it that way, but it works for my needs. This setup isn't just for gaming though. Been experimenting with local AI models and I change out the 5080 for a 3090 in the egpu to take advantage of the additional vram. It's a bit of a home lab thing as much as it is for gaming.
